After being charged with drink driving, Kate Ritchie enters mental health clinic citing 'stress'

Even celebrities need a break sometimes. We get it – with hectic schedules, public appearances, and constant media attention, it’s no wonder that some of them eventually burn out. Unfortunately for them, when they do finally reach their breaking point, it’s often in a very public way.

Such is the case with Australian actress and radio personality Kate Ritchie. After being charged with drunk driving earlier this year and taking an extended leave of absence from her job at NovaFM, rumours began swirling that she was struggling to cope with the stress of modern celebrity life.

And now, almost a year later since she first made headlines for her acts, those rumours have been confirmed after Ritchie was spotted entering an exclusive mental health clinic in Sydney over the weekend.

The 44-year-old Home and Away star was seen carrying bags as she entered The Sydney Clinic in Bronte on Sunday. Accompanied by her mother Heather, Ritchie took one of the family help books she's written called Everyday Play into the clinic with her – a collection of recipes and activities for children (and their parents).

The actress left the facility the following Monday afternoon, dressed simply in blue trousers, a matching denim shirt, and a purse, after being picked up by her mother.

The Seniors Discount Club does not suggest that Kate is being treated for any specific condition at The Sydney Clinic; however, we can confirm that their facilities offer programs specifically geared towards patients experiencing problems with alcohol or other drugs, as well as those seeking treatment for mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression.

'They have a good strike rate and day programs allow patients to come and go and continue to see family and work while getting help,' the insider said about the clinic.

'This time of year is perfect also as it’s a non-ratings period, most people are out of the city holidaying and networks are winding down.’

Kate Ritchie's decision to go on a leave of absence from her show with Nova came as a great shock to listeners in October, as they had noticed her increasing shortage of appearances.

Ritchie's followers and dedicated listeners were stunned in October when she revealed she would be abandoning her hit Nova drive show for the rest of the year owing to stress. Credit: Instagram.

Shortly after the announcement, a radio insider stated she might not return to the Nova drive show and might be replaced by temporary co-host Ricki-Lee Coulter.

They said: 'Kate returning next year is not a certainty.'

'Management loves Kate but she's been MIA a lot this year and Ricki-Lee has done a great job filling in. That's created a dilemma. Tim is a big fan of Ricki-Lee and Joel is in the Kate fan club.'

Key Takeaways

  • Kate Ritchie has entered a mental health clinic after a difficult year which included being charged with drink driving.
  • The clinic Ritchie is attending is popular with on-air talent as it is relatively discreet.
  • Ritchie's future with her radio show is uncertain, with one insider suggesting she may not return next year.

Whatever Kate is going through right now – whether work-related stress or something more personal – we hope she takes this opportunity to relax and recharge her batteries so she can come back even stronger next year.

Hope she works through whatever is happening in her life.

She is lucky she has the support of her mum.

It shows that celebrities too are just like anyone else.

Sometimes just a little time out helps
Please leave her alone! Good on her for seeking help,I am doing so today and scared stiff!

I wasn't saying anything bad against her !.

Good on you for taking the steps you are .

We are great listeners on here if you ever need to share.

I suffer with depression and anxiety so do understand.

I wish you well and it won't be as scary as you think

Your health and welfare is worth much more than fame. Take all the time you need to get well and back on an even keel. I have just this week re-connected with my psychologist after six months of trying to go it alone and failing miserably. :(
Another big step, Ricci.
No, you didn't fail miserably,
you tried admirably.
You'd only fail if you stopped trying.
