After being banned from a local pub, these cheeky emus came back with reinforcements

Those living in rural towns will know that life can move a little slower, allowing one to take pleasure in the simpler things.
But living somewhere with so few inhabitants also means that sometimes, your closest neighbours are the wild animals roaming about.
Kevin and Carol are two famous emus that have made the name for themselves in Yaraka, an Aussie outback town with a population between 10 to 20 people.
The pair had previously been banned from a local pub in 2020 for naughty and disruptive behaviour. But now they’re back – and they brought reinforcements with them.
Leanne Byrne, one of the town’s residents, told reporters how she helped hatch the chicks using an electric blanket. She recalled how her friends found nine eggs in a shrub, and they were moving. Unfortunately, most of Kevin and Carol’s siblings didn’t make it.
The pair has since developed a close bond with Ms Byrne, to the point that when she needs to leave town for a few months for work, the emus also leave for the hills until she returns home.
However, when Ms Byrne returned to town this year, Kevin and Carol remained aloof. Which is a big personality change since the pair have been known to target tourists, pinch food from their tables, steal drinks and also take car keys from locals in the caravan park.
‘They’re quite cheeky,’ shared Ms Byrne.
But what was the reason for the sudden personality switch? Well, it turns out that Kevin and Carol are now parents!
‘Some gentlemen were cutting some wood and they came up behind them and tapped them on the shoulder and said hi,’ said Ms Byrne.
But the pair had been difficult to locate since then. Still, Ms Byrne tries to find time to go around town for a chance to meet up with the troublesome emus.
‘A lot of townsfolk ring me straight away and say “I think Kevin and Carol are down near the dump” and I rush down there and can’t see them, or “I think they’re up near the airstrip” and nope, I can’t see them.’
Ms Byrne hopes that the pair stay out of town though. She also mentioned that she doesn’t think of them as ‘pets’ even though she (and some of the other townsfolk) helped raise them.
She explained that Kevin and Carol probably stayed in town when they were chicks because there was a drought at that time, and it was easier for them to find water and feed.
Now that they have chicks of their own, Ms Byrne said that their babies won’t have the same problem.
‘With all this rain, there’s lots of waterholes and everything,’ she said.
