Aesop's Fables Are They Forgotten

I remember as a little girl my Pa telling me a story every night and it was a an Aesop fable which he always gave me the meaning behind it every night .

Did you read theses when you were little, did you read them to your kids and do you now read them to your grandchildren ?

The Tortoise and the Hare

The Story: A Hare is boasting about his speed in front of the other animals and challenges any one of them to race him. A Tortoise accepts his challenge. At first the Hare thinks it’s a joke, but the Tortoise is being serious. So, soon after they begin the race. The Hare runs full speed ahead and to make fun of the Tortoise, he decides to take a nap. The Tortoise keeps slowly going and going. When the Hare wakes up, he notices that the Tortoise is near the finishing post and fails to win the race.

The lesson: Slow and steady wins the race. Sometimes in life, it might look like other people are racing ahead of you. But you never know what obstacle could stop them in their tracks. It is important to keep moving forward and one day you will get there.

The Lion and the Mouse: No act of kindness is Ever Wasted.

The Story: A Lion is fast asleep until a Mouse wakes him up. The Lion opens his big jaw to swallow him. But the Mouse begs the Lion to think again, as he may become useful in the future. The Lion laughs the idea off and lets him go. Sometime later, the Lion is caught in a trap by some Hunters. At that moment the same little Mouse walks by and notices the Lion trapped. He walks up and chews the rope to free the Lion. The Mouse smiles and says, was I not right?

The Lesson: Little friends may prove great friends. You never know who will prove to be useful in the future. It is best to maintain great relationships with everyone and to be kind to all. You never know where your kindness could lead you!

I am often fascinated that so many people were brought up this way. It must have felt really special being read too etc. I have no memory at all of this in my own life, so nothing is missed. It is just always curious when reading of warm loving family interactions.

I won't expand upon my own experience of being a child, with both parents of mine being orphans as they probably did not know to do this. However, if reincarnation is a thing, next time round I'd love to enjoy such an upbringing, i reckon it must have been great.

Everyone that has experienced a warm loving close family interaction throughout their lives, I truly hope everyone appreciates how very lucky you were and possibly still are, if you continue experiencing this. You did quite literally win the lottery, on Earth-day one.

I don’t recall many bedtime stories being read individually to us multiple kids when we were growing up, it would have taken mum all night. We did have story time before bed, using our one bright pump up light or a lantern, no electricity then. It was when mum and all us kids who could read would take turns reading a story as a group. Kids learning to read were given a turn, it was so we all got practice reading. I always read my 2 kids bedtime stories when until they decided they were too old for such things, and I always read my grandkids bedtime stories when they stayed with us. My 8 year old granddaughter and I read to each other before she goes to sleep when she stays with us now. It makes wonderful memories that last a lifetime.
