ABC's breakfast show undergoes major revamp

For many of us, when we reach for our steaming mugs of morning coffee, there's nothing we love more than tuning into the brekky news.
And, it appears one of our favourite breakfast shows, ABC's News Breakfast, is about to shake things up a bit, making those morning moments even more interesting.
Michael Rowland, co-host of ABC's News Breakfast, made the exciting announcement on social media that fellow broadcaster Bridget Brennan will be joining him on the show as a newsreader and presenter starting November 6.
'From Monday, the fabulous Bridget Brennan joins News Breakfast in the role of newsreader,' Rowland said.
'Bridget will also be co-hosting with me at least one day a week while Lisa Millar works on other ABC projects. She'll be a fantastic addition to the breakfast team!'
This significant change on the show’s lineup happened because regular host Lisa Millar will be periodically stepping back from her duties on News Breakfast to work on 'other projects'.
Lisa’s absence will be filled with the diverse talent and fresh voice of Bridget Brennan, who is of Dja Dja Wurrung and Yorta Yorta descent and has been a forthright voice on Indigenous issues—including the Voice referendum and calls for 'reparations'.
Previously, Brennan made waves as the ABC's Indigenous affairs editor and even worked as the Europe correspondent of the public broadcaster.
In July 2022, on the Insiders program, she was asked what she thought the Indigenous Voice to parliament should mean and said: 'This has to be about justice.'
'It has to be about reparations. It has to be about giving some power to Aboriginal communities.'
Meanwhile, on Backstory, Brennan said that the referendum campaign made her feel that 'no matter where you are on either side of the debate, our rights are being debated and our history is being debated'.
She shot to prominence in 2017 during an infamous incident that involved her and a cameraman flying a drone above the Tamworth Correctional Centre.
Prison officers reportedly chased the drone in a car after they had spotted it flying over the prison.
According to a corrective services spokesperson, the ABC crew initially claimed they were just shooting 'general footage of the area'.
'Under further questioning, the journalist admitted they were capturing footage of the centre and did not have a Civil Aviation Safety Authority licence to do so,' the spokeswoman added.
Brennan was criticised by NSW Corrections Minister David Elliott for 'reckless and irresponsible' behaviour, saying: 'Drones are a significant risk to prisons because they can be used to smuggle drugs, weapons and mobile phones.'
Brennan also recently confessed that covering Indigenous news is more grueling than being ABC's Europe correspondent.
'It took a huge toll on us, and it continues to take a huge toll on us. I think it's the hardest job in the ABC,' she revealed.
However, despite the challenges, her deeply rooted passion shines beyond difficulties. To Brennan, the importance and influence of Indigenous representation in the media are paramount.
'We know that that means something to them.'
