94-year-old man loses $10,000 over a single phone call in this cruel scam

In today's digital age, where convenience and connectivity are at our fingertips, a sinister underbelly of scammers and fraudsters preys on the unsuspecting.

It's a sad truth that the elderly are often targeted due to their perceived vulnerability and, sometimes, less familiarity with the digital world.

The story of a 94-year-old man from Mount Waverley in Melbourne's southeast is a reminder of the vigilance needed to protect ourselves from such threats.

The 94-year-old man fell victim to a cruel and calculated scam that cost him nearly $10,000—a substantial sum that no doubt represented a significant portion of his savings.

On 19 September, he received a phone call from an individual posing as a representative from a telecommunications company.

This scammer was convincing enough to obtain the elderly man's bank details over the phone and instructed him to leave his bank cards in a letterbox, promising they would be reissued later.

Armed with the man's bank cards, the fraudster went on a shopping spree that afternoon, purchasing four new iPhones at stores in Malvern East and Chadstone.

The thief didn't end with the $9,000 spent on phones; he attempted to buy an additional $4,500 worth of electronics, though this transaction was thankfully declined.

The scammer also tried withdrawing cash using the victim's cards at ATMs in Ashburton and Mount Waverley.

In response to this incident, police have released images of a man they believe may be connected to the scam and are calling on the public to assist with their inquiries.

But this wasn’t the first time scammers preyed on vulnerable Aussies.

In a previous story, a 91-year-old widow was scammed into attempting to purchase $2,000 worth of gift cards.

The scammer impersonated a bank employee and convinced her she was assisting in catching other scammers.

The scammers were branded as 'absolute mongrels', and the public was advised to hang up on such calls from scammers. You can read more about the story here.

I hope they catch this low life quickly with lots of hard jail time and make this individual pay compensation, court cost to his victims and the courts for having to deal with this low life garbage.

Sadly because he was most probably overseas he will never be caught.
There is a scam buster out of America that goes after these people, he has had their call centers shut down, he hacks into their computers, he even turns their cameras on and shows them what they are doing.
He does give some hints on how to handle them though.
The scammers hate him and they all know him by now, sometimes he pretends to be an elderly lady and pretends to do everything they ask of him/her, all the while taking peoples money back and giving it back to the scammee.
I love watching his videos on YouTube, if you ever get the chance look him up on there, his name is Pierogi and his channel is called "Scammer payback" and he has bright blue hair lol.
He does advertise Nord VPN, but that's not a scam, we use that program ourselves.

Earlier this morning had a text from My GOV deleted it immediately as my phone said suspected spam but also some scammers should learn how to spell
It's not that can't spell, they can. It's that they need to change certain words by 1 letter so your security/spam checker will fail to pick it up.

If that picture is from a security camera, I hope the police took his fingerprints from the handrail.

What a complete & utter arsehole. By his looks, shove him in the klink for 5 years & deport him. I shit sick of what appears to be undesirable imports continuing to do crime and appropriate action of justice not dished out.

If the shithead was born here, still, send him back from where his parents or grandies came from.

The populous of Aussie wouldn't like to see me in power, that's for sure.
I would...
I am also sick and tired of hearing these stories and a lot of the time, seems to be people who have been given a better life by coming to Australia.

The major problem in this country resides not in the police but in the hands of an increasingly weak governments and the pathetic judiciary. Thieves are hit with a wet lettuce and leave the courts only to commit another crime on the way home.

This man maybe does not have his full faculties (94). Perhaps he needs someone to be looking out for him and told NOT to answer the phone unless he knows the identity of the caller. If he does have his full faculties (and many 90+ people sure do) he should have been aware NOT to hand out this information over the phone to a stranger and should have hung up which is what my 89 year old husband does when he gets any phone calls like this. In fact 99% of our calls are unanswered...let go to answering machine as do many other seniors these days.

Absolutely agree with you, people wouldn't like me to be in a position to deal with these scum either !!!!!

Oh dear who is watching this 94 year old interests! Where are his family to warn him about scams.l hope he gets his money back
We assume a family? Maybe he doesn't want anyone to know his business?
It's so sad to see the elderly so vilely mistreated. We are easy prey to the 'imports' who supposedly revere the elderly in their communities.
