$7.50 chicken doughnuts from Coles spark a heated debate among users online – “I HATE THIS!”

After Coles unveiled its latest item this week and left thousands of its customers floored, several more shoppers couldn’t help but engage in a fiery debate over whether or not the product is brilliant or downright ridiculous.
The announcement took the internet by storm after one Reddit user shared a photo of the brand new panko crumbed chicken doughnuts. Each pack weighs 400 grams and retails for $7.50 – made to be popped in the air fryer for a few minutes as a quick snack.
Plenty of shoppers expressed having mixed feelings about the food item, but in the span of a few days, the initial shock that consumers felt resulted in an endless squabble as more users hopped in on the chicken doughnut fiasco.
“These are designed for quick air frying,” one user pointed out. “It maximises surface-area-to-volume ratio while still making a patty-like shape (e.g. for burgers) that doubles as a big a** chicken nugget. This is actually really clever food engineering.”
“I can imagine kids loving the novelty.” said another.
“I think it would cook more evenly this way. No cold dense centre.” a third pointed out.

Others suggested that the hole in the centre would also be perfect as a ‘sauce reservoir’ or a spot to crack an egg into.
Another argued: “Why is everyone SO bothered by this? I've seen people eat KFC chicken with melted chocolate on it…”
But plenty more were far from being impressed and they weren’t shy about sharing their blunt, unfiltered thoughts on the food item either.
“What an abomination! It’s in the frozen section of Coles, isn’t it?” one mocked.
“No! This s*** is wrong on every level. I mean there is probably no real chicken in them and they most certainly aren't doughnuts.” added another.
“Why is it so hard for the supermarket chains to sell proper food items such as chicken schnitzels that are made of real chicken? Not this pre-cooked, formed from nugget-goo s***!”
“Australia is becoming more and more American… Coles needs a bullet for this.” sneered a third, while a fourth said: “I hate this and any other variation of chicken nuggets like chicken fries. They keep changing the shape like that’ll make us want it.”
“Ah yes, the old “just because you can doesn’t mean you should” scenario. Just the thought of this makes me sick!” commented another.

Coles Senior Category Manager for Poultry, Daniel Slavin, responded to the heavy backlash online, explaining that the product was designed for kids.
“[They] were developed to help provide a family-focused meal solution for even the fussiest of little eaters,” he said.
“The hollow circle format is a familiar concept for customers (calamari, doughnuts) and provides more of a crunch when eating which has clearly appealed to customers,”
“Coles’ Own Brand meat development team worked closely with our development chefs to create a new range of easy meal solutions that would appeal to families and support parents with making mealtime fun for kids while providing a great quality meal,”
He added that the product is made with Australian RSPCA-approved chicken “with veggies for hidden goodness”. Coles has also previously launched chicken dinosaurs with cauliflower as well as chicken chips with cauliflower.

“The chicken doughnuts are available at around 200 Coles supermarkets but have been so popular that we’re looking to expand to more stores nationally in the coming weeks,” he continued.
