$5 Kmart find is the secret to opening tough jars like a pro

Arthritis, weak grip strength, and other dexterity-related issues can make it incredibly difficult to open jars or carry out other household tasks.

But thanks to one woman’s ingenuity, a clever solution to this tricky issue has been found!

The woman shared her brilliant idea in a popular social media group dedicated to Kmart DIY hacks and décor.

The woman revealed that she has difficulty opening jars, due to arthritis in her hands.

‘With my arthritis hands, I’ve lost the strength to open up jars,’ the woman said in her post.

‘I misplaced my old “jar opener” and have been struggling,’ she added.

However, she found the ‘perfect’ solution to her struggles in the form of a drawer liner, specifically, the $5 multi-purpose liner from Kmart.

The woman attached a photo of her multi-purpose liner – which she found in the kitchen section – and explained that she cuts it up into smaller pieces and puts those over the top of jars so she can open them with ease.

She also shared that she cut them up into 32 pieces for her school’s Mother’s Day stall and labelled the 12 cm squares as ‘jar openers’.

Other social media users quickly praised the woman’s brilliant idea and took to the comments section to share their own ‘hacks’.

‘What a great idea! I used to have a Tupperware jar opener but it perished and I struggled to find a replacement. I’ve got some of this in the cupboard and I’m going to cut it up,’ one declared.

Someone added: ‘Yes! I have this exact thing in my kitchen.’ The same person added that the best part about this ‘hack’ is that you can throw them in the wash together with your towels to clean them when they get dirty.

‘They’re good to go all over again!’ They continued.

Another said she had a ‘square of the product’ in her utensils drawer because it helps her open difficult jars. While one claimed they have something similar, but that she ‘crochets the edges to make them look pretty’.

Others shared their own hacks for opening difficult lids.

‘I just use rubber gloves,’ one wrote. While another shared they open stubborn lids with a teaspoon.

‘Pour hot water on and around the lid – it makes it a lot easier to open,’ a third commented.

Many shoppers turn to Kmart for their DIY projects. Just like this woman who gave her old glass jars a makeover, and made it the ‘perfect’ personalised gift for anyone who is into cooking! You can read more about that here.

I got told years ago at work to tap the jar lid on the bench and it releases the seal and opens easily. My husband was impressed when he saw me do this recently , even though we have been married 44 years and I’ve been using this trick for more than half our married life lol
me too but I make sure to hit the jar on a chopping board instead of the counter top, although I must admit that my husband is my all time best jar/anything opener, years of working with his hands means they are very strong and he enjoys that they are so much stronger than mine, he has a little smile on his face when I hand him anything that I am in a struggle to open.

May I ask where you buy them and does it open any jars sizes, please? 😊
Thank you 👍🏼
Gosh, now you're asking. From memory it cost about $2.50, it either came from Kmart or Aldi probably Aldi and yes, all size jars are at its mercy! It looks a bit like the old fashioned bottle openers but without the triangle shaped top bit. Hope that helps.:)

i find that by tapping or smacking the jar lids on benches ( lay a cloth on it before doing so) immediately helps to open the tight jar lids . Been doing this all my life and i am 70 years old. and yes if you really need help that little hack above helps a lot too. no need to boil water or some fancy gadgets just to open jars. try it and let me know if it works for u .

I remember as a child my father trying to loosen the tops on bottles by putting the lid into the hinged side of a door & then applying pressure, pulling the door to hold the cap while twisting the bottle. I believe this worked but only if the correct amount of pressure was applied ( not enough to break the glass ). I believe this left some damage to the door & jamb, but that didn't stop him.

The jar key if that’s what you’re referring to, can be bought in House. They’re like a really thick, solid plastic bottle opener so yes they do open any size jar! 😁 I use mine to pop the seal, and it’s usually easy enough to open the jar with your bare hands after that. However, if you still have issues use the nonslip grip mat stuff. You can get it in cheap shops, Kmart, Big W and when Aldi have their kitchen sale it’s really good value to grab some from there 🤗

😂 sorry for laughing. I’m imagining myself doing this… I am so disastrous that even with a cloth, I’d end up breaking the jar and odds on for cutting myself! 🤣 I know I need these little gadgets for not only my weak wrists, but my own safety 😂🤗

To open new jars, there’s a little gadget called a jar key. You can find them in House! Once opened I use the above material. It’s a life saver to open jars and even bottles of water, etc. i have very weak wrists and live alone. I would most definitely starve without mine 😂
The jar keys are gold.

I have been using an oil filter removal strap for at least 25years, mine was bought from rep o for about $2 at the time, it is all plastic with a rubber strap that fits multiple size lids from cordial bottles to large lids and the plastic part fits against the bottle for extra leverage. I have since seen this idea sold in multi packs at discount stores. To pop a seal I have a plastic tool I bought at a kitchen store many years ago, it has a piece that goes between the jar and the bump in the lid and you just lift it up and the seal pops. Both very cheap, handy products I couldn’t manage without.

Rather than risk damage to my kitchen bench, I hold a wooden board in one hand & firmly tap the lid a few times until I hear the the seal pop. Works every time. (ps Don’t use your ‘best’ board‘.) 👍

Yeah my mother in law did that once at our house she broke the jar I said you're only supposed to tap the lid on the bench not the glass jar, my fault I didn't explain clear enough

I've had a jar-key for years and I think it's the best kitchen gadget that I have ever used.
