2021 Melbourne Cup: the race that stops a nation

Australia’s race that stops the nation, or in 2021, the race that ‘restarted the nation’ was run yesterday at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse, and here are the results!
The event is also commercially known as the 2021 Lexus Melbourne Cup. Photo: AAP Image/Con Chronis.
In an emotional and shockingly comfortable victory, the race was won by Verry Elleegant, ridden by jockey James McDonald and trained by Chris Waller.
Even though Incentivise was heavily tipped as the favourite and led the first three quarters of the race, Verry Elleegant sped past his rival on the final straight, securing an upset victory.
In what now seems like an uncommon occurrence, this Melbourne Cup was free from injury and death across the 23 runners of the race. A very ideal outcome.

“What an extraordinary racehorse,” said Verry Elleegant’s owner Brae Sokolski after the race, still in awe.
“You guys have all been witness to a historical moment not just in racing history, but in Australian sport, because this mare has just taken herself into the pantheon of the greatest racehorses this nation has ever seen.”
“This has cemented her place right up the top of those real top horses because of what she’s done over the years,” added jockey McDonald.
“To win one of the biggest races in the land; it is just incredible.”
