In her now-viral TikTok video, which was viewed more than 93,000 times, the mum explained that she chops off the ends of the onions first before chopping them in half.

She then took the top layer off commenting that the method is 'much easier than peeling the skin'.

'Then I turn it around this way and slice it,' she said.

TikTok users were quick to critique her knife skills, pointing out that her 'hack' was an act of food wasting.

One user wrote: 'You are wasting a lot of onion with how much you cut off the ends - there's nothing wrong with it and you are putting it in the bin.'

Others defended Emmy by claiming that they also do the trick themselves.

'That's exactly how we do it in my household,' one user said.

Another added: 'How else are you supposed to cut onions - what are they harping on about?'

Others advised her to 'leave the root on to cut the onions' because it prevents them from falling apart when being chopped.

Meanwhile, another user wrote that she simply purchases pre-diced onions at the supermarket, claiming that they are game changers.

A number of users called her out by saying that she didn't chop the onions in a professional way, to which Emmy responded with 'I'm not a professional’.

The TikTok mum eventually admitted that she understood why people were upset and promised that she would try to cut the ends of an onion thinner next time.

This is exactly how I cut onions, I'm not sure what the fuss is about

For me this is wasteful, though everyone needs to do what they find easier or normal.

I don’t see what the fuss is over chopping onions.
Besides the young lady paid for the onions and she should be able to cut them how she wants to.
I’ve never heard of the $6 Pull Chopper but living in country NSW I’m nowhere near a Kmart store.

Depends how many times you pull the lever...never had any problem with mine and saves the tears!😭
I have one of these but I prefer to use them for tomatoes. I'm like to get my onions as thin as possible. But it also depends on what you're cooking!
