‘You are the King Grub!’: Live TV clash spirals into political chaos

Political controversies can erupt in the most unexpected ways, often turning routine disclosures into heated debates.

When financial dealings and high-stakes decisions collide, scrutiny is inevitable—especially when they involve key political figures.

A live TV clash reignited scrutiny over past financial moves, triggering accusations and heated exchanges between government and opposition.

Political tensions flared on live television as Sunrise host Natalie Barr pressed Liberal frontbencher Jane Hume.

She questioned whether Peter Dutton’s share dealings during the global financial crisis were ‘suss’.

The heated exchange saw Employment and Workplace Relations Minister Murray Watt branded ‘King Grub’ by Shadow Finance Minister Jane Hume, escalating the already fiery discussion.

With an election looming, a forensic review of Mr Dutton’s parliamentary declarations uncovered new details.

He had disclosed a series of share purchases in major banks just before Labor announced a $4 billion bank bailout in 2009.

Mr Dutton dismissed the allegations as ‘muckraking’, accusing Labor’s ‘dirt unit’ of digging through his financial history to manufacture a scandal.

‘Go back to 2008, 2009. Peter Dutton hasn’t bought shares, apparently according to the records for three years,’ Ms Barr said.

‘Then he advised he bought shares in three big banks at a very low price and bang, Bob’s your uncle. The Government does a big bailout and the shares spike.’

‘Then he sells at a very high price. Can you say that is not suss?’

Senator Hume pushed back, arguing that Mr Dutton was in opposition at the time and had not been briefed on Labor’s plans before the announcement.

‘This is a smear campaign from a desperate government that have run out of ideas and think they are going to lose the election,’ she said.

‘So they’ve made these accusations under the shroud of parliamentary privilege from Senate estimates, because they’ve run out of ideas.

‘They’ve run out of excuses. They’ve run out of time. They are the grubbiest people. Murray you are the King Grub!’

Analysis of Mr Dutton’s disclosures showed that between October 2008 and March 2009, he updated his register of interest 13 times to reflect share trades.

While campaigning in Sydney, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was asked if Labor was suggesting the Liberal leader had engaged in insider trading.

‘That’s a matter for Peter Dutton to explain,’ he responded.

Mr Dutton maintained that he had no access to sensitive government information and was not privy to GFC-related briefings.

A spokesperson for Mr Dutton criticised Labor, saying: ‘If the Albanese Government’s dirt unit spent more time being focused on fixing Labor’s cost of living crisis rather than obsessing about Peter Dutton, Australians might be better off.’

Senator Hume claimed she was not aware of whether shadow cabinet had been informed about the bailout ahead of time.

‘I can’t tell you that. I don’t know I wasn’t in government at the time. I can assure you that Peter Dutton has done nothing improper here. Nothing improper,’ she said.

Mr Watt insisted that Mr Dutton still had unanswered questions regarding the timing of his share trades.

‘How many shares did he trade?’ he asked.

‘Miraculously the day before the government of the time bailed out the banks. How much profit did he make on those share trades?’

‘Most importantly was he aware that the government was about to bailout the banks when he made the share trades.’

‘He put out a tricky, vague statement yesterday.’

‘This is suss, Nat.’

‘These are legitimate questions asking about someone who wants to be the Prime Minister of Australia.’

‘We’ve seen another story break today about the $30 million dollars of property buying and selling that Peter Dutton has been engaged in whilst in parliament.’

‘Maybe that’s why he doesn’t understand the cost of living pressures that people are under. Maybe that’s why.’

Ms Barr acknowledged that Mr Dutton had declared most of his property transactions, prompting Mr Watt to point out that some were declared late.

‘Keep mentioning his name, Murray, every time our vote goes up. You’re disgusting,’ Senator Hume fired back.

Is Wong going to be questioned on how she has managed to buy 4 houses? Is Tony Burke asked how he has been able to buy 7 homes never having held a job? How has Albanese managed to buy a $4M home AND get the govt, using our money to pave the road to his house? Will a journalist ask these questions?
Yes, I hope a lot more questions are asked, I hope they are jounalists and hope that they dig deeply into the backgrounds of the Liberal-Co`s and are examined very closly as well.

If he wasn’t a politician his financials would be considered good thinking. He wasn’t big bikkies at the time ,
Surely he wouldn’t be stupid enough to think that someone on the hunt for scandle true or false wouldn’t find that a good place to start.
My husband, just an average bloke managed to buy low as shares went up. Plain good luck in this case. So why not Dutton or his financial advisors ?????
i

Because it seems that he was involved in insider trading which means he has used his position to obtain information which has advantaged his decisions regarding the buying and selling of his shares.

The usual pre-election question. If people are stupid enough to let media sway them they shouldn't be allowed to vote. As for Hume, her 0 to 1000 rage in one second suggests she knows Dutton has something to hide.

26 July 2022 —Mr Albanese declared, “Parliament will be different. More respectful debate” ….
The hope of change from this declaration disintegrated from Day 1!
References to “ the previous government” … ( negating the silence of the Opposition??? which effectively threw Australians under the electoral bus??) and subsequent nasty political references.
Whichever declared political party or aspirants we support, in pursuit of respectful dialogue, the likes of Mr Watt and his “Leader” should refer to their proposed earlier respectful interactions lest they reveal their true identity ?
Grannycraz. They each do that, blame the previous govt for the financial mess the current govt is in. Actually our current govt isn't in a financial mess but the Noalition like to make out there is and they are better at financial management. Yeah they might spend less but we the ordinary people get less. eg Medicare, aged care, ndis, just to name a few. We each have a different way of looking at things and your way is obviously very different to mine.

You're really stretching, Cristina. I won't be satisfied until the financials and real estate portfolios of every single politician in the over-governed nation are laid bare in an easily-accessed manner. Let's have a look at all of them.

GrannyCraz isn't interested in objective analysis. Albanese's Govt was actually a lot calmer and more respectful than Abbott's or Morrison's. Having witnessed Hume's slavering gutter-brawling recently, I doubt if either of the majors have anything to crow about! If we have to have fur flying, at least give us someone of wit and intelligence - such as, oh, I don't know ... Paul Keating ... ?

I never watch 7 or ABC they spew out crap , do your own research, sometimes it isn’t much better.
I made a vow that I wouldn't watch Seven ever again on the day Armstrong and Aldrin walked on the Moon. Just about every television set in the world must have been tuned in on that historic day to watch it.
But streaming across the bottom of the screen as they did their thing on the Moon was the message "EXCLUSIVE TO CHANNEL 7".
That was it for me.

The Liberals were well and truly routed in the last election but people seem to have forgotten that. They made themselves irrelevant and that how it should have stayed. From the very first moment Dutton took over the leadership at that time everything he has done and said has been about 'the next election's - not serving the best interests of his electorate or the Australian people. Albanese has allowed himself and his Party to be dragged into responding to every utterance by Dutton instead of focussing on his own policies. Never forget Robo Debt, the Sports Rorts and the hideous and expensive NBN debacle. Dutton's nuclear policy is second rate, ludicrous solution to the energy crisis - like the NBN, a solution proposed only because he HAS TO come up with something Labour isn't proposing. So once again the Australian taxpayer will pay big and get second rate services. Unfortunately, Jane Humes extreme negativity is what I have come to loathe about Liberal female politicians. SO - right now, who to vote for? Neither party is performing well. Do we have a mish mash coalition government supported by minor parties and independents or do we want to go down the Palmer Trumpian line. No way!!! It's all a mess. What we DO NEED is more authentic, caring, honest politicians, who truly do put the PEOPLE / COUNTRY FIRST - rather than their own ambitions for personal power.
Sorry but you won’t find them in the ALP/Green Coalition. Albo is desperate and trying to bribe himself back into power. Throwing money at Victoria, which is his mainstay State , must put all other States’ noses out of joint.

I’ve never been much of a ‘ politics watcher’ but I know it’s very volatile….It just seems to me as so much backstabbing, muck raking, name calling and lie telling by all these ‘big politicians’, in order to get a vote from the population that will secure them a place in power, so that they can screw the population over anything they think will bring income into their coffers in order to pat themselves on the back, and award themselves a salary that is inappropriate to their job and totally unacceptable……..But it seems they just don’t care……That’s my takeaway from politics, and I might as well close my eyes and put my mark wherever it lands…….

Dutton has never been a Prime Minister Albo and what a shambles he's made. I wonder how much his wedding is going to cost the taxpayer? Penny, Jim, Richard, Tony, Tanya, Andrew and Chris are Wong for cabinet and should be Bowen out?
GIVE ALBO - THE ELBOW

Well good luck if Dutton is the next Prime Minister, in my opinion he is not a man of integrity, he has made a fortune for his personal use and screwed every tax loophole to do so. He and his wife are worth about $380.millon, how on earth is he the one to understand issues which affect everyday life and the battles that families and the community are facing regarding the current economic climate.? He has already indicated that he is going to slice up Public Services and we still haven`t recovered from the last massacre. You said that Albanese and Co have made a shambles over the past 3 yrs. Poor man and Co have almost bent over backwards trying to patch up the devastation caused by Liberal and Co. As for his wedding why is there so much intrest in it anyway, I`m sure he will be paying for it himself.!

The Labour party used to stand for integrity, it is no longer they haven't got the guts to smear outside of parliament privilege. lets ask Albo how he has become a multi millionaire while on a government wage?
And why he left his mother in a housing commission home for. 65 years ,while he had homes he could have made her life a lot better , he keeps whining about it but did nothing, great son I don’t think .

Albanese`s Mother passed away in 2002, 23 yrs ago and maybe, just maybe, she liked living where she was. Balmain was is a very trendy and handy place to live. I would say she had her friends and community there, why would she want to leave this?? He certainly had a lot of respect for her and has indicated this on many occassions.

OK Robbo3006 - who else? Greens? a multitude of independents? Come on mate, use your brain - without a major party and only leftovers, what a cock up Australia would be.
Just exactly what it's like now, corrupt to the core. Insider trading, politicians getting to become millionaires on 200k salaries, the system is broken and needs a total overhaul.
