‘This is a joke, right?’ Outrageous price for Coco Pops shocks Aussie woman

Every week we see the soaring prices of grocery items and we can all agree that inflation is only getting more serious. A couple of weeks ago, we reported about a recent price hike of a familiar brand of bread. You can read more about that here.

And now, one woman has found an ‘outrageous’ price increase on an Aussie breakfast staple.

The Aussie visited her local Coles store and was left stumped at a sign promoting a seemingly outlandish deal on a certain cereal.

In a video posted by Lauren Whitney on TikTok, the disgruntled Aussie shopper showed a promotional deal offering two 650-gram boxes of Kellogg's Coco Pops cereal for $17.10.

According to the yellow sticker, a ‘saving of $1.90’ could be made if customers were to buy two boxes, which are priced at $9.50 each. Based on some reports, this is a huge jump in price as a similar-sized box cost $7.50 last year.

‘This is a joke, right?’ She asked in disbelief.

Other Kellogg’s varieties, including Just Right and Crunchy Nut Corn Flakes also cost $9.50 for a similar-sized box.

Additionally, a smaller box of Coco Pops weighing 375 grams costs $7 at Coles. Fruit Loops weighing 285g cost $7, and Frosties weighing 350g are priced at $6.50.

Ms Whitney criticised the supermarket for increasing their prices while many are struggling. In her comments section, she said:

‘The simple fact is that these large companies make billions a year, as does the government from the taxes, while we are down here struggling to get by.’

Hundreds of others also shared what they had to say about the price hike.

‘When did Kellogg’s become a designer brand,’ one quipped, while another joked: ‘I just got mortgage papers for next week's grocery shop.’

‘Rich persons breakfast sweets,’ another claimed.

Another said they saw the same thing recently at their local store and were ‘shocked beyond belief’. ‘When did it get this bad?’

On the popular social media forum Reddit, a similar post went viral. The original poster said they knew that groceries have increased in price, but were astounded at the massive hike.

‘Insane,’ one commented.

Another claimed that supermarkets have ‘realised’ they could hike up prices as much as they like because of inflation. ‘Their profits are what’s driving inflation,’ they added.

‘That’s my biggest problem, people keep saying “oh, it’s just because of inflation. It will ease eventually”, no it won’t,’ one replied. They claimed that supermarkets will ‘keep’ prices at this point from now on.

‘These prices are now the new norm,’ they suggested.

‘1 for $9.50?! WTF. Where is this?’ One asked. The original poster replied: ‘Western suburbs in Melbourne, definitely not regional or rural!’

You can watch Ms Whitney’s video below:

A spokesperson for Kellogg’s Australia released a statement regarding this issue. They said: ‘With food production costs the highest they have been in decades, and the impact of supply chain and inflationary pressures, we recently increased the price of our cereals.’

They added that they sourced most of their ingredients from Aussie farmers and produce most of their cereals in Australia.

‘We believe that Kellogg’s continues to offer Aussie consumers great tasting and great value food. Coco Pops is available in three sizes to suit a range of households and budgets, and is less than 50 cents a serve based on the RRP,’ they explained.

According to a recent study carried out by investment bank UBS, customers shopping at Coles in December last year would have encountered an overall 9.1 per cent price increase compared to when they did their grocery shopping at the start of 2022.

It also comes after experts at the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reported that the cost-of-living crisis has hit a new high, with inflation rising to 7.8 per cent during the last quarter of 2022. This figure reportedly marked the fastest annual pace of inflation since the 1990s, and this might prompt the Reserve Bank of Australia to raise interest rates in the coming weeks to combat further inflation. More details about this report can be read here.

I have started eating oats. Much cheaper and better for you. Add some fruit on top and it’s a yummy breakie.
Speaking of price hikes I just have to vent about dog food. The box of 6 100g serves that I paid $5 for last week is now $8.50 and a 2.5 k bag of dries has gone from $10.50 to $15.50. I don’t mind 20 or 30 cents but this is over 50% increase. My little dog means the world to me and I would give her anything but my money only goes a small way. Will be changing brands on principal.
Pity us with 3 very large dogs who go through 20 kilos every 3 weeks. It costs us $100 every 3 weeks, not including treats.

Better not use internet today as apparently it is outraged!!!!!!

I buy 3 boxes of Coles quick oats ( 12 pack) @ $3.30 each = $9.90
These last 7-8 weeks either dried fruit or banana with yoghurt. A real healthy meal.

Coco Pops this week $4.75

I like oats in winter but my wife has them every day

I’m delighted they’re so expensive- less people will buy them and the community will be healthier as a result- so many other yummy breakfast options😊
I don't think so. They will still buy them and cut out other stuff. We are conditioned by advertising and pressure to buy certain products and a lot of people won't change. Look at cigarettes and alcohol these have gone through the roof but they still get sold.

Yes, l am a Weet-Bix kid. Ate them for breakfast when l was younger & still enjoy them in my 70's now. I have found too that the larger quantities are not always the cheapest way to buy these when calculating price per 100 grams with a bit of mental maths.
Stock up when they are 50 % off which is every couple of weeks.

Maybe go for a healthier cereal like weet bix a large box for $5 or cornflakes still cheaper. Both of these are so much better than coco pops ..way less sugar

True - but I don’t think Cocoa Pops are actually addictive, or maybe they are are to some . . . Who knows it’s a weird world out there!

Thank you , Disie.

People seem to like to pay and Complain and never Change.
Surly that shelf still being full of non sold product will speak for its self.
Smile.

If you don't like the price then don't buy it. They'll eventually reduce the price if they're not selling stuff. That's my mantra.

Yes Suzanne rose. I am sure the Dentist never complains about children or adults eating Coco Pops.
