‘The twist’

Remember ‘The Twist’? It was a dance craze in the 1960s, inspired by Hank Ballard's blues song ‘The Twist’ released in 1959. However, it was Chubby Checker's cover version of the song in 1960 that catapulted the dance into the spotlight and made it a cultural phenomenon. The Twist was pretty easy to learn and made grown-ups who didn't usually dance to young people's music get up and dance for the first time. Who still remembers dancing to The Twist? This was my favourite dance, I loved the smooth rhythm of it and I could actually DO it well. My boyfriend then and I entered a 'Twist Competition' at TC's Sound Lounge in Elizabeth Street behind where the Myer Centre was eventually built. We came 2nd, a really good couple won the prize. Really good memories of TC's Saturday nights.

On a skying holiday in the early 60s at the resort I was staying I won a Twist competition:D(I believed then and now, that it had nothing to do with my dancing/rhythm...I am hopeless at both)

You must have done something right Michelle maybe your type of rhythm what what they were looking for.

I remember going to the pictures one Saturday afternoon and they had a twist competition at the half time remission as they did back in the 60's. I went up with I think about 8 others and won, with the most claps in the cinema !!! I could twist while dropping down to near floor level. Tried to do this again, just then, cant go down anymore lol. I think I won a box of chocolates.
