‘Never had reduction like this’: Coles shopper bags $160 worth of groceries for $8!

In the world of shopping, there are few things more satisfying than snagging a bargain that leaves you feeling like a winner.

For those who are always on the lookout for ways to stretch their dollars further, the tale of Alexandria is nothing short of inspiring.

Alexandria ventured into her local Coles on Easter Saturday at 6 pm, only to stumble upon a treasure trove of markdowns that would make any budget-conscious shopper's heart sing.

The shelves were brimming with discounted meats, including chicken schnitzel, diced beef, minced beef, spicy chicken wings, premium Lilydale chicken, diced chicken breast, beef pie, and even a tray of croissants.

The original price tag for this haul? A hefty $158.89.

But Alexandria's final bill was a jaw-dropping $8.47.

Yes, you read that right. She managed to save a staggering $150.42 in her grocery shop.

The markdowns were so low that some items were priced as low as 38 cents. A packet of chicken thighs for 39 cents and a Coles beef pie for just 79 cents were among the steals.

The tray of croissants, which would have set her back by $11, was hers for 55 cents, saving her $10.45 on that item alone.

Alexandria's success story, which she shared on social media, has left many astounded.

'Awesome! Better it's sold than put in a skip at the end of the day,' one commented.

'That is what my dreams are made of. Good job you,' another added.

A third chimed in, 'Good for you! Our Coles NEVER has reduction like this.'

'You nailed it! Wouldn't be advertising location, you'll never see this again otherwise,' another joked.

In a similar vein, another budget-conscious mum recently hit the jackpot at Costco Wholesalers, finding a 12-pack of Rafferty's Garden Chocolate Custard Pouches for 97 cents—less than half the price of a single pouch at Coles or Woolworths.

So, when’s the best time to go grocery shopping?
  • Morning - customers can enjoy discounts of 10 to 20 per cent on items nearing expiration.
  • Before dinner - customers can avail of discounts of up to 50 per cent on items nearing expiration.
  • Right before the store closes - customers can get discounts of up to 90 per cent on items nearing expiration.
However, discounts are subject to store policies and times and may vary.

One of my local supermarkets has team members place refrigerated items in a certain area ready to be discounted. At a certain time of the day another TM will appear with the discount tickets and complete the task. It’s just a matter of knowing where and when.

Some of it will be only worthwhile if frozen, not too sure how croissants freeze. Otherwise, nothing special about this. More likely the foodbank operations in the area weren't collect and someone just thought mark em down and run an inhouse sweep as to how long before someone takes to post on social media. Best free publicity this retailer is ever going to get. Much cheaper than paying $10's of 000's to advertise on commercial TV that very few people tend to watch these days.

I noticed in my walk around Coles had a lot of Easter products 'REDUCED TO CLEAR' after the Easter break.... I suppose the next thing is they won't stock Easter goodies......on top of Australia day merchandise...

Why don't the supermarkets have a special time of the day where the pensioners and the welfare recipients can access these price reductions? With the appropriate identification cards presented.

It's hardly something that's available everyday at those prices. You also have to be at the particular store at that particular time....a few minutes eithee way and you've missed it.
Not a story, and definetly not a headline.

This is pointless writing about this "so called" saving...you will not get this much of a reduction anymore!

I always check out the discounts and the close to out of date foods at my supermarket. These days you have to save where you can.

Never have we ever found any bargain like this at any Supermarket. Wish people would stop saying they do. We have tried all different time of the day, found nothing. 🙁

Coles Innisfail had marked down chicken use by that day with only 39c and 40 c marked down from full
price. Get real!

I used to shop at Woolies many years ago when on a pension with four children to feed. Always went near closing time to grab the meat markdowns. Always stocked up on any markdowns I saw that I could use, but you gotta be quick and look for the markdown stickers.
