‘Just a joke to rich people’: Why is everyone in disbelief with this designer item?

Hermès, the French luxury fashion house, is no stranger to creating waves in the fashion industry.

However, the brand's latest offering has left many scratching their heads in disbelief.

So, what is the object of this widespread mockery?

Well, it’s a paper envelope… with a price tag of $126 USD ($169 AUD).

The envelope, which is wrapped in silk and reusable, is available in two sizes and various patterns.

According to Hermès, it's 'ideal for storing travel documents, tickets, or notes’.

The product description reads: 'Where is the best place to leave an important message? Inside this signature orange Hermès paper envelope.'

The brand suggests that 'this keepsake can be sent as a special invitation or even a declaration of love,' serving as 'a long-lasting way to turn your records into beautiful memories.'

But the internet has been quick to point out the absurdity of the price, especially when compared to a regular white envelope that costs less than a dollar.

The envelope's vibrant and elaborate designs, similar to those on the brand's scarves, have not been enough to justify the price for many.

The Hermès envelope has become a viral sensation, with social media users poking fun at the ultra-expensive item.

New York City-based comedian Benton McClintock went viral for calling out the home collection on social media.

Benton joked, ‘They have so many super, super incredible products,’ showing a mushroom paperweight that costs $1,300 and the Hermès envelope.

'Please don't bother sending me ANYTHING in the mail unless it's in the Hermès $135 envelope! Where else is the best place to leave an important message?' Benton continued before saying it’s ‘reusable’, so you’re ‘wasting money if you're not purchasing this’.

'The diversity, the range!' Benton quipped in faux wonder about the different sizes.

Users commented on Benton’s video and joined in the fun.

‘So if the envelope is reusable…do I just ask the person I sent it to to give it back?' one joked.

'TWO SIZES for the envelope?! They're really spoiling us this holiday season,' another said.

Another commented, 'We're literally just a joke to rich people.'

Another responded, ‘Rich people are st***d enough to fall for these scams.’

The envelope is not the only expensive paper good from the high-end brand.

Fans of Hermès can invest in a $5,000 ($6,650 AUD) tiny rubbish bin, a paperweight for almost $3,000 ($4,000 AUD), and a small storage basket for about $7,700 ($10,300 AUD).

Unlike the Birkin, there's no top-secret wait list before you can buy one.
