‘It's ridiculous': Why a petrol station’s 99-cent fuel sale has everyone talking

Fuel prices have long been a topic of frustration for Australian motorists, with many feeling the sting of rising costs at the pump.

But recently, an unexpected move by a service station has sparked a fiery debate about the government's role in these skyrocketing prices.

What started as a seemingly simple gesture quickly turned into a powerful statement, leaving people questioning the true cost of fuel in today’s economy.

A service station in Melbourne’s south-east caused a stir this morning when it sold petrol for less than a dollar per litre, highlighting the pressure the federal government's fuel excise is putting on consumers.

APCO at Cranbourne West offered unleaded fuel at 99.9 cents per litre between 10am and 11am, a price not seen in nearly two decades.

Motorists rushed to the station to take advantage of the rare discount, with many waiting in line to fill up.

Jasmine managed to fill the tank of her V8 Commodore for the first time in a while.

‘I can hardly drive this car,’ she said. ‘I drive it once a week now because I can't afford to.’

Pensioner Pauline was also among those to make the most of the cheap fuel.

‘It's ridiculous, I'm on a pension so you have to think, how much out of that pension fortnight have I got to spend on that fuel,’ she said.

The stunt was organised by the Libertarian Party to protest the rising fuel taxes, which currently amount to 55 cents per litre.

David Limbrick, a member of the Libertarian Party, criticised the government for the high taxes on fuel.

‘I think it really highlights that government is just gouging the prices of people so much, whether it's through excise taxes and other taxes,’ he said.

‘And I'm just wrapped that a small number of people are going to get this discount today.’

Peter Khoury from the NRMA weighed in, noting that Melbourne's average fuel price was currently $1.90 per litre. However, he questioned the effectiveness of the protest.

‘The numbers don't add up, we look at average prices when we think about petrol prices,’ he said.

‘But we need the excise. The money raised from the fuel excise should go into and does go into improving the roads and making them safer.’

In a previous story, we reported on a similar stunt earlier this year, when another petrol station made headlines by offering shockingly cheap fuel. Read the full article here.

Key Takeaways

  • A Melbourne servo sold petrol for 99.9 cents per litre to draw attention to the burden of fuel excise taxes.
  • The stunt, organised by the Libertarian Party, sparked a rush of motorists eager to take advantage of the discounted price.
  • Local residents, including a pensioner, expressed frustration with rising fuel costs, highlighting the financial strain.
  • While some praised the protest, others questioned the overall impact of the excise tax on fuel prices and road safety funding.

With petrol prices continuing to soar, is the government doing enough to ease the burden, or is this just the tip of the iceberg? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Peter Khoury mentioned that “we need the excise” to improve roads. So why is road improvement costs so much higher now than 20 years ago? Materials and machines are still the same.
Major increase in cost most likely come from unionized road workers. Having 2 standing there just flagging the red/green lollipop at minimum wages instead of getting an electric portable light system (rain or shine).

As Peter Khoury said "we need the excise", well why is it not being applied. The Bruce Highway & many other roads are an absolute bloody disgrace with large potholes everywhere. When it's raining, these potholes fill with water & cannot be seen & cause hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in damage to tyres, wheels & suspensions. There is back & forth buck passing between various authorities as to who is responsible for upkeep & there is probably a loophole somewhere to avoid litigation. We can't avoid paying the excise with our fuel purchases, but the recipients of this excise are very much like the Christmas Grinch.

Are you dreaming. Must be if you think materials and machines cost the same now as twenty years ago. Also obviously you are not a worker or had some cushy job previously. Unions are the only way to push employers to give a fair liveable wage. We have enough working poor now being exploited by their employers. Good luck to those who work in an industry where working conditions are less than ideal ie outside in all sorts of weather using dangerous machinery, not in an air conditioned office. These industries are unionised for that reason - better safer working conditions and decent wages.

With such excise we should have the best roads on the planet, but once again the average motorist is subsidising every commercial vehicle that uses them.

Fixing roads is low on the agenda. Albosleazy wages and other over paid government is first. Raising revenue is second. More cameras more revenue. They have to make up for the fake handouts they give so when they cut tax on wages they increase the taxes on everything else which in the long run doesn't do anything to help anyone except the Albosleazy government. Tax from fuel and fines are the main income. If they don't get enough on fines they raise the price.

The killer is the tax on a tax - GST on top of the excise tax & what about electric vehicles getting free power from NRMA, no funds going towards roads etc. EV Rego needs a weight tax as heavier vehicles do more damage to road surfaces. The federal government is laughing all the way to the bank & adding to inflation.

Petrol tax has been in place since 1901, hardly Albo's invention, Davidpedo.

Never a truer word said! Many shopping centres have FREE EV charging stations. Ever seen free petrol pumps at such locations? Of course not!

The weight aspect is spot on. A typical Tesla weighs over 500 kgs more than a Hyundai i30!

Not in S.A. you don't, the roads here are shocking.
In my opinion W.A. has the best roads in the country, they know how to do it right!

You are absolutely right about WA roads. Having travelled extensively throughout NSW, QLD, VIC, SA and WA, and have found the road system and level of maintenance in WA is far superior to the other states.

Must be the WA Labor Government's fault! :ROFLMAO:

Yes, and the more EV's the less fuel tax, but the more all of us are paying for their power. There seem to be plenty of free charging stations. NSW and Vic have both said that there could be power cuts over summer because of our badly planned renewables program.

This is not the only excises grabbed by government, alcohol prices have risen, that has no excuse like some who say it's for road repair, the state government's take care of roadworks not the federal government. The cost of living is manufactured by federal government, fuel prices cost to transport and the logistics industry, beer tax,? tobacco tax? And many others go to revenue and have a direct affect on inflation!!

State governments pocket fines, not the Commonwealth.. On a 30k trip out of Sydney the difference between the lowest and highest price for unleaded 91 was $0.72. This shows that the garages are keeping prices high. Today, in my area, unleaded 91 ranges from $165.5 to $2.05.9. At $165.5 the garage would be making money while at the higher price they are making a super profit.

I suppose you would be happy with the Liberal/Nationals handing tax cuts to the rich. At least Albo changed it so everyone got a cut. LNP practice voodoo economics.

I have yet to see road improvements in this area. There are too many roads in rural areas which are not covered by government taxes on fuel and our councils are not keeping up with repairs.

sitting in the queue with your motor running while waiting to get to the pump how much fuel did you waste and did you actually save money. How many had parts of their car overheat???

so where is the electricity coming from to charge this ever-increasing fleet of EV's? From the rest of Australia's pockets - free electrity - price gounging on fuels! Total imbalance here.
