‘It’s out of hand’: Woolworths receives backlash over controversial Cadbury chocolate pricing

Shoppers rely on sales and special deals at supermarket giants like Woolworths to make their dollars stretch a bit further, especially in times of financial stress. It’s no different when it comes to buying desserts.

Whether you have a sweet tooth or buy chocolate as an occasional treat for others, it's not uncommon to keep an eye out for the next great deal on your favourite confectionery.

However, Woolworths has recently come under fire for its controversial pricing strategy on a range of popular Cadbury chocolate products.

Customers have taken to social media to express their frustration and confusion over the supermarket's 'buy more, save more' deals, which they claim are misleading.

In a post shared online, one disgruntled shopper highlighted the latest offer on confectionery bars, including Crunchie, Boost, Moro, and Dairy Milk.

The deal allows customers to purchase three chocolate bars for $6, a saving of $1.50 for the three.

‘Chips were one thing, but this chocolate bar situation is out of hand,’ the shopper said.

Another customer echoed this sentiment, expressing frustration that the discount only applies if three chocolate bars are purchased.

They noted, 'Not sure if there’s a wider problem of Coles/Woolies doing very average specials for confectionery, but it sure seems worse than it used to be.'

Another shopper added, ‘Only 50c off per bar is a joke.’

The supermarket also offers a similar deal on 160-190g blocks of Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate, where shoppers can buy three blocks for $12, saving them $6.

While this may seem like a good offer, some customers have pointed out that it still requires a significant upfront cost.

One shopper lamented, 'Paying $6 each for a small block of Cadbury Dairy Milk is insane.’

‘With this special, you’re basically getting a block of chocolate for free, which is great. But I don’t have a spare $12 to blow on chocolate.’

‘When did it all get so expensive?' the shopper added.

Last month, Cadbury faced criticism when Woolworths customers noticed a puzzling detail on various blocks of Dairy Milk chocolate.

A 360g block of the popular chocolate was priced the same as a 180g block of the same variety for $6.

Although the price of the 360g blocks has since increased to $7, it's still only $1 more than a block half its size.

According to 7news.com.au, with Woolworths’ current special, shoppers would still get a better deal by buying two 360g blocks for $14, giving them 720g of dairy milk instead of three 180g blocks with only 540g of chocolate for $12.

7news.com.au also understands that the Cadbury ‘three for $6’ and ‘three for $12’ offers fall under Woolworths’ ‘buy more, save more’ deals.

Aside from Cadbury, Woolworths also offers Half Price Specials on other products until Tuesday, 23 January.
Key Takeaways

So if you buy three bars of chocolate you now pay the same price as you did for each bar a month ago so we’re is the incentive to buy multi. Be like me and leave them on the shelves better for your health and your pocket

Customers are forced to spend more up front to get a large quantity of chocolate.

We are constantly told that chocolate should be eaten in moderation.

Buying 3 to save is a false bargain because:

1. Some who buy will be tempted to consume too much too soon (health issues);

2. Some with more discipline will leave them in the pantry and the chocolate has a real chance of sitting there past its use by date.

Woolworths profits ✓

Customers lose X

If the corporation has its customers' best interests in consideration it should just sell individual bars at a discount.

Is Woolworths now adopting Costco sales tactics?

As a single pensioner, I don't want more than one of anything most times. I'm annoyed at the paltry "savings" offered by these gimmicks especially the "members offer" which only applies if you buy two and saves you a whole dollar. In my place, I don't have room for 2 items and one of them would probably go "off" before I could use it. Whenever I see a "Buy 2" tag, I just walk (to another store).

I'm in a similar position but being made to go to a different store means we're locked out of Woolworths because we haven't the budget or the space for multiple items.
