Peter Dutton reveals cost-of-living measures that may 'make a real difference to families'

Navigating the ever-fluctuating landscape of fuel prices can be daunting, especially for seniors on a fixed income.

The cost of living has been a concern that touches all corners of society, and fuel expenses could take a significant bite out of monthly budgets.

Yet, there could be a glimmer of hope on the horizon for those feeling the pinch at the petrol pump.

Liberal leader Peter Dutton MP announced a bold move that could capture the voters' attention.

Dutton promised that fuel excise rates could be slashed by half if elected as Prime Minister.

His proposal was the cornerstone of the Liberals' cost-of-living measures and a direct challenge to the Labor Party to match the commitment.

The proposed cut would see a substantial 25-cent reduction in fuel excise for a year.

This cut could bring the rate down from 50.8 cents to 25.4 cents per litre for both petrol and diesel.

'The Coalition is committed to supporting families and businesses and alleviating the cost-of-living pressure that everyone, right across the country, is feeling right now,' Mr Dutton stated.

'If elected, we will halve fuel excise for 12 months. And if elected, we will deliver this cost-of-living relief immediately—whereas people have to wait fifteen months for Labor's 70 cents a day tax tweak.'

'This cost-of-living relief will make a real difference to families and small businesses—everyone from tradies to mums and dads, to older Australians, and to transport delivery workers,' Mr Dutton promised.

The savings for Australian households could be significant.

A single-vehicle household refuelling once a week could pocket an extra $14 weekly.

Over a year, this could add up to around $700 to $750.

For those with two cars, the savings could double to approximately $1500 annually.

'The commute to work, taking the kids to school or sport, the family drive, or the trip to the shops will all cost less under the Coalition,' Mr Dutton emphasised.

The financial implications of this measure could have an estimated cost of $6 billion.

However, Dutton pledged to introduce the legislation for the excise cut on the first sitting day of the next parliament, ensuring that the benefits would be felt as quickly as possible.

This was not the first time a pre-election fuel excise cut has been on the table.

The Morrison Government offered a similar incentive in 2022.

On the other side of the political divide, Labor has outlined its cost-of-living measures, including an extra tax cut of $5 a week for individuals earning more than $45,000 starting next year.

'I understand there's always an appetite for governments to do more,' Treasurer Jim Chalmers stated.

'We've got budget constraints, but it's not the only thing we are doing in cost of living. It goes hand-in-hand with more bulk billing, cheaper medicines.'

The total value of these changes is estimated at $50 a week for the average worker, factoring in a $150 energy rebate.

While the Liberals' fuel excise cut is a headline-grabbing proposal, the cost of Labor's $5-per-week tax cut—amounting to $17 billion by 2030—highlighted the delicate balance between providing immediate relief and ensuring economic stability.

It's crucial for voters, particularly seniors who may feel the financial strain, to weigh the benefits of both parties' offers.
Key Takeaways

  • Peter Dutton promised to halve the fuel excise for 12 months if elected Prime Minister.
  • The Liberal Party's proposal, intended as their major cost-of-living measure, could see a two-car family save approximately $1500 over the year.
  • The fuel excise cut would reduce rates from 50.8 cents to 25.4 cents per litre and would cost the government about $6 billion.
  • This announcement was seen as a challenge to the Labor Party, with Dutton contrasting the immediacy of the fuel excise cut to Labor's planned tax cuts.

The LNP did this last time to win votes and failed, petrol prices are a far cry from what they were, and the transport industry gives up their fuel rebate to finance this to some extent, further adding to the cost of everything. Guaranteed petrol prices will rise too again as suppliers garner more profit as a result. A permanent income tax cut is more dependable than these short term proposals imo.

Whatever they promise they will take twice as much off us from somewhere else. Don’t expect to be better off with Dutton mob. Politicians are politicians - all talk and out for themselves. Whoever wins the election I can guarantee after about six weeks everyone will be wishing for the previous government to come back.
not on your nellie would i want albo. why oh why do you and all others who condemn politicians have a crack at it?

Dbutton is physically incapable of telling the truth. His playbook is 'Trump-lite'. We've all seen how quickly he backed down on his promises once elected. Dutton is only making this announcement to distract from the fact that his other 'so-called' policies are falling like dominoes.

What people must realize IS!, you are dealing with the LNP, who are RABIDLY ANTI WORKER & any good that the workers have got through this Labor Govt, which is SUBSTANTIAL, will be taken back by this mob. Grind the worker down & keep them under the boot heel, give them 2 Bob an hour & a Bashing when they put their hands out for their pay.
I kid you not, the leader of the LNP is not a good person, his mere presence is Evil personified & with his cronies, most particularly 2 certain women, they WILL attempt to destroy, hang, draw & quarter every semblance of workers, well being, that they think they can get away with.
REMEMBER. Better the Devil you know.

And you have had your head in the sand supporting that traitorous lying mongrel Elbowgreasy who is not interested in the welfare of Australians, only interested in trying to look good in the eyes of the world and lining his own hip pocket, He and his cronies have made Australia the laughing stock of the world.
hello - unearthed a republican grub from this comment-- uses trumplican words because he has none of his own-- bet you have profited from the last 3 years of what this hateful government has done , but betting that you will whine when you lose everything under Dutton is a sure thing and I don't bet on sure things

Rubbish won’t help anything
most people see it as a good thing-- the reality is it is a reduction in gross revenue that pays for everything they expect to happen-- That means no money so their taxes will increase, 40,00 people sacked and consultants employed instead,Medicare will have to be scrapped, TAFE colleges closed down-- and guess what-- supermarkets posting record profits, and the cost of living just got worse.-- it is nothing more than DUTTON scam to get in the public trough again.

I think we all know that politicians dribble more shit than a paddock full of cows with diarrhoea. What they give in one hand they take with the other, so nothing they do will help us in any way.

Lnp have already lied when they said they haven’t made cuts to the hospital in Bundaberg and Mackay and they have these things should be mandatory for health as well as community housing for the homeless and struggling older people

I feel that cheaper fuel will help everyone, even if it is only for 1 year. Where tax cuts, childcare rebates, reduced student loans ass help they are targeted to a specific group. Cheaper fuel helps all who drive and reduces the cost for trucks and transport etc

What has not been mentioned much is that saving on excise will help with alot as the truckies will be saving more than $10 per week and the tradies will be saving alot too so their expenses will drop which will flow onto you more than the $10 per week if you earn over $45000 so some of us who do not earn that much due to retirement will not benefit from it at all. At least with the fuel majority of us will have the benefit of the savings and flow on from the transport industry and tradies so it is a win win I think as it is help us all not just a few
as a retired tradie ..I promise you the cut wont effect the prices the tradie will still charge the exact prices..at $10 pw a tradies fuel costs vary by $10 to $20 per week so very little chance of customers bill reducing ...AND the possible$10 saving for the tradie wont make the slightest difference to him. The only benefit is to the politician making the temporary discount for him to get himself elected....(normal behaviour for a politician)....The other party is no different...we need a business man Not a politician...look what's happening in good old USA..we could learn from that, im amazed at the waste they are uncovering (maybe enough to eliminate taxes all together ) maybe, but not quite, wouldn't hurt
