Peter Dutton reveals cost-of-living measures that may 'make a real difference to families'

Navigating the ever-fluctuating landscape of fuel prices can be daunting, especially for seniors on a fixed income.

The cost of living has been a concern that touches all corners of society, and fuel expenses could take a significant bite out of monthly budgets.

Yet, there could be a glimmer of hope on the horizon for those feeling the pinch at the petrol pump.

Liberal leader Peter Dutton MP announced a bold move that could capture the voters' attention.

Dutton promised that fuel excise rates could be slashed by half if elected as Prime Minister.

His proposal was the cornerstone of the Liberals' cost-of-living measures and a direct challenge to the Labor Party to match the commitment.

The proposed cut would see a substantial 25-cent reduction in fuel excise for a year.

This cut could bring the rate down from 50.8 cents to 25.4 cents per litre for both petrol and diesel.

'The Coalition is committed to supporting families and businesses and alleviating the cost-of-living pressure that everyone, right across the country, is feeling right now,' Mr Dutton stated.

'If elected, we will halve fuel excise for 12 months. And if elected, we will deliver this cost-of-living relief immediately—whereas people have to wait fifteen months for Labor's 70 cents a day tax tweak.'

'This cost-of-living relief will make a real difference to families and small businesses—everyone from tradies to mums and dads, to older Australians, and to transport delivery workers,' Mr Dutton promised.

The savings for Australian households could be significant.

A single-vehicle household refuelling once a week could pocket an extra $14 weekly.

Over a year, this could add up to around $700 to $750.

For those with two cars, the savings could double to approximately $1500 annually.

'The commute to work, taking the kids to school or sport, the family drive, or the trip to the shops will all cost less under the Coalition,' Mr Dutton emphasised.

The financial implications of this measure could have an estimated cost of $6 billion.

However, Dutton pledged to introduce the legislation for the excise cut on the first sitting day of the next parliament, ensuring that the benefits would be felt as quickly as possible.

This was not the first time a pre-election fuel excise cut has been on the table.

The Morrison Government offered a similar incentive in 2022.

On the other side of the political divide, Labor has outlined its cost-of-living measures, including an extra tax cut of $5 a week for individuals earning more than $45,000 starting next year.

'I understand there's always an appetite for governments to do more,' Treasurer Jim Chalmers stated.

'We've got budget constraints, but it's not the only thing we are doing in cost of living. It goes hand-in-hand with more bulk billing, cheaper medicines.'

The total value of these changes is estimated at $50 a week for the average worker, factoring in a $150 energy rebate.

While the Liberals' fuel excise cut is a headline-grabbing proposal, the cost of Labor's $5-per-week tax cut—amounting to $17 billion by 2030—highlighted the delicate balance between providing immediate relief and ensuring economic stability.

It's crucial for voters, particularly seniors who may feel the financial strain, to weigh the benefits of both parties' offers.
Key Takeaways

  • Peter Dutton promised to halve the fuel excise for 12 months if elected Prime Minister.
  • The Liberal Party's proposal, intended as their major cost-of-living measure, could see a two-car family save approximately $1500 over the year.
  • The fuel excise cut would reduce rates from 50.8 cents to 25.4 cents per litre and would cost the government about $6 billion.
  • This announcement was seen as a challenge to the Labor Party, with Dutton contrasting the immediacy of the fuel excise cut to Labor's planned tax cuts.

I feel that cheaper fuel will help everyone, even if it is only for 1 year. Where tax cuts, childcare rebates, reduced student loans ass help they are targeted to a specific group. Cheaper fuel helps all who drive and reduces the cost for trucks and transport etc
you deliberately miss the point - the fuel might appear cheaper buy it is being paid for out of consolidated revenue not out of the fuel companies profits
That is right , by forgoing that 25 cents liter to buy your votes, the Australian budget take a massive hit on what the government can provide for YOU-- That means to recover that money lost, your taxes will go up, services will be down graded, Medicare will be closed down, TAFE colleges will be closed again,40,00 people will lose their jobs ( less tax revenue),- NDIS will be reduced and all the while the cost of living is going up--GET WISE PEOPLE -THIS A DUTTON/LNP SCAM TO GET INTO GOVERNMENT ON THE BACKS OF YOUR GREED FOR CHEAPER FUEL THAT WILL DISAPPEAR WITHIN MONTHS OF DUTTON THE SCAMMER BEING ELECTED

as a retired tradie ..I promise you the cut wont effect the prices the tradie will still charge the exact prices..at $10 pw a tradies fuel costs vary by $10 to $20 per week so very little chance of customers bill reducing ...AND the possible$10 saving for the tradie wont make the slightest difference to him. The only benefit is to the politician making the temporary discount for him to get himself elected....(normal behaviour for a politician)....The other party is no different...we need a business man Not a politician...look what's happening in good old USA..we could learn from that, im amazed at the waste they are uncovering (maybe enough to eliminate taxes all together ) maybe, but not quite, wouldn't hurt

and what waste would that be exactly-- you cannot say because Mush has not revealed any real figures and where the waste is-- all you are getting is --I have saved billions in waste, well I can say the same thing here-- elect Dutton and the LNP and there will be billions lost in LNP scams -- you see -- no proof and no substance

Maybe mr Dutton should drive a cab for a week to get back in touch with the people he wishes to represent. he is sooo out of touch ...(THE OTHER SIDE IS ABSOLUTELY NO BETTER)

at least the other side is not trying to scam the voters by getting them to pay themselves for the privilege of giving their votes to the scamming party-- That's right the reduction if fuel costs is paid for by the taxpayers in general revenue reduction receipts-- the fuel companies are not affect but will see a massive surge in profits from the extra fuel sales.

And you have had your head in the sand supporting that traitorous lying mongrel Elbowgreasy who is not interested in the welfare of Australians, only interested in trying to look good in the eyes of the world and lining his own hip pocket, He and his cronies have made Australia the laughing stock of the world.
Tut,tut,be fare all pollies are the same, don't name call no need for that

Saving on the fuel sounds great, but having nuclear built here not really.
I have been watçhing parliament question time.
Every time there was à vote on to help the people, the housing, the tax cuts for everyone, the pay rise for the low income earners, the economy etc etc etc ,

I watched in disbelief in how Peter Dutton and his party all stood up said his vote was NO. I don't care about left or right, I don't care about the way politics in how it works. I care about other people who are struggling, that need help in their mental health.
My respect for this person and his party sadly went down the drain. I want someone to help everyone, not help his point scoring.

I appreciate the help for the $300.00 which the other side said no to.

So yes really good news for the petrol for one year and then the building of nuclear in Australia will be added.

One year won't help in that time fuel will probably rise again. Will servos pass it on,will companies lower their prices I think not. If you are so disgruntled with all parties instead of giving advice go into politics yourself see if you do better. Wouldn't want that job dammed if you do dammed if you don't, all countries seem to be going same way unrest everywhere

there is no good news for the cheaper petrol as it is costing the tax payer billions to pay to sell their vote to Australians leading scammer- That is right, the excise duty goes to pay the bills in Australia and that has been lost by Dutton trying to scam votes-- you will have your taxes increased and many services that the LNP are against, shut down to pay for this scam-- read the 40,000 works who will no longer be paying taxes to help keep the budget in balance because of the Dutton petrol price scam to get votes.

Have you ever heard the salesman pitch when selling a car-- you can have this car when I pay you to buy it from me--NO-- well reverse it and you have the 25 cents a liter smoke and mirrors trick from the salesman
that 25 cents is coming out of consolidate revenue which is money you have already paid when you buy fuel so you are selling your vote for your money from revenue that is used for the benefit of us all--
Now that creates a big hole in the budget so so like the man that digs a hole to get rid of the dirt from the first hole he dug, he is now going to raise the income tax rate on workers, reduce wages , conditions and benefits, close down Medicare and raise the cost on drugs-This is the political scam of an immense degree so immense that all the voters can see is the fuel saving, even though they have EV car or do very little driving
WE are all supposed to believe that reducing the fuel cost ( remember using our money to do so)will bring down the cost of living--TRUST ME IT WON'T, because greedy corporations will see the opportunity if increase profits
DON'T FALL FOR THE DUTTON SCAM AND LYING PROMISES.
Actually you may like to take a look at what the Labour Government promised in the last election & what they actually delivered. There was a lot promised & not delivered, e.g. the cost of electricity was supposed to go down. It has inact gone up in price, on several occasions. Yes the Labour Party helped every body with its subsidy of $5 per, even the workers in the top wage brackets. Five dollars a week has had little to no bearing on helping consumers with the rising cost of electricty.
So in the previous buget period the Labour Government created a substantial surplus. So while every day Australians strugle with the cost of living, the Labour Government has been going around spending this (OUR) surplus on election promises. Albanese has just about targeted everybody in society with promises of spending (if they win the election), in other words The Labour Government has continually been buying votes, at our expense, as agreed upon by all involved in the Economy!

BUYing votes you say-- is fixing up Medicare after the LNP tried to destroy it buying votes -- NO
--Is getting the TAFE back up and operating buying votes--NO
Is making the PBs cheaper for all, buying votes--NO
Is reducing the tax for low income workers buying votes -- NO
Yes some promises had to be delayed because the money was not available at the time you want it to happen but that is responsible government and budgeting
NOW this petrol price reduction is a straight out VOTE BUYING SCAM as it is being paid for out of general revenue that is not getting the excise collected and not being paid for by the fuel companies and that means that every promise from Dutton cannot be kept because the money is not in the kitty to pay for them--that means increase taxes, less service, no Medicare, higher PBS prices, fewer school, less road repairs, more people unemployed
Now all of that is irresponsible government because of a Dutton scam to get into power.

YEs well just remember, Dutton is against Medicare and bulk billing. He did try last time. At least as a pensioner, my electricity bill has been dramatically reduced under labour and my doctor still bulk bills me. Don't think Dutton is to be trusted.
My electricity bill has gone up by 13.22%. What is your secret?

Whatever they promise they will take twice as much off us from somewhere else. Don’t expect to be better off with Dutton mob. Politicians are politicians - all talk and out for themselves. Whoever wins the election I can guarantee after about six weeks everyone will be wishing for the previous government to come back.
Never could one wish for the same as we have experienced for the past 3 years .

so you are prepared to hand back all of the pay rises and benefits that I have received over the past 3 years because you would rather be scammed by Dutton who is using consolidated revenue to buy your vote-- Dutton will screw you sunshine but don't try to screw me over as well.
