Fun Fact - According to the ABS, 78.4% of the residents of the City of Greater Dandenong LGA were not born in Australia or had both parents who were not born in Australia. Question 10 prompted this piece of trivia.
As a child I lived in a town of 3,500 and there was one Italian family and one Dutch family. I live in the “same” town as an aged person. The town now has a population of 30,000 and I think there is every ethnicity represented. It is actually difficult to get medical, dental or pharmaceutical assistance from a person who has English as their primary language

Broad Beans I love em  and they are toxic, really or just kidding
Some species of vetch and alfalfa contain a toxic amino acid which produces lupus (an autoimmune disease) like symptoms in humans when eaten in large quantities.

Most vetches are toxic to humans and non ruminant animals, though mostly used as livestock feed. They contain toxins like canavanine and cyanogenic glycosides which can cause illness if eaten in large quantities. Broad Beans a type of vetch, (Vicia Faba) are only safe to eat when cooked, as they contain compounds like vicine and convicine which can cause serious genetic diseases called favism in individuals with G6PD deficiency. Common vetch is not grown for human consumption.
Vetch from this farm is grown specially for livestock use only and is part of the Aussie Hay Run, for farmers in need of feed

EXACTLY!!

Livestock can handle the canavanine due to the fact they have two stomachs. It mimics the L-arginine (I think!), another amino acid. The processing of canavanine in non ruminant mammals results in metabolites that mess around with proteins and results in autoimmune disorders in humans.

Getting a bit technical for a Tuesday morning! 😛
