If you walked into Target this season expecting shelves of charming Christmas decorations, you may have felt something was missing.

Instead of the beloved festive ranges that once made the chain stand out, shoppers are now greeted with Kmart’s Anko brand.

For many Australians, the sparkle of Christmas shopping at Target has dimmed.

For decades, Target carved out a unique place in the Christmas market, offering decorations that balanced affordability with quality.

Shoppers could rely on designs that looked stylish without breaking the bank, and many built collections over the years.

That changed in 2024 when Target replaced its Christmas range with Anko products—sparking outrage that has continued into Christmas 2025.

Each festive season since the switch, customers have taken to social media to express their frustration.

Gold Coast mum Chelsea Bennett summed it up in a viral video: ‘Just wondering what we did to deserve Target ditching their Christmas range and giving us Anko? Three years without Target Christmas decor and it is still devastating.’

Her post drew thousands of comments from Australians mourning the loss of Target’s once-reliable offerings.

Some saw the change as more than just sentimentality—it was about quality.

One shopper wrote: ‘Anko is excellent value and quite reliable, but they are not quality products. The bigger issue here is that you now have less choice. Kmart or Kmart.’

'If I wanted to shop Anko products, I'd go to Kmart. If I wanted some mid-high end products, I'd go to Target.'

Facebook shopper, Yahoo Lifestyle

For loyal customers, the biggest heartbreak has been the inability to complete existing decoration sets.

Families who had collected matching stockings and ornaments over years suddenly found themselves unable to add to their displays.

As one customer noted, ‘It's just so sad seeing people having to post up their stockings for sale because they couldn't find the additional letter that they need.’

The financial impact was revealed during the 2024 post-Christmas sales.

At Target Knox, Anko Christmas trees originally priced at $129 were cleared out for just $10, suggesting stock simply did not move at full price.

‘This will be below cost, but clearing them at $10 is still better than literally putting them in a skip, or warehousing them until next year. They'll just buy 20% less next year,’ one bargain hunter said.

For many Australians, this confirmed what they already knew—Target’s decision was not resonating with customers.

Once a go-to for ‘accessible quality’ Christmas pieces, the store had abandoned what made it special.

‘I'm genuinely devastated by the change. target had the BEST mid range homewares 😭,’ lamented one shopper, while another said: ‘Every year I look forward to new target Christmas items 😭😭😭 I was SO devastated when I heard they were doing anko Christmas 💔.’

Why Target's Christmas range was special:

  • Quality materials that lasted multiple seasons

  • Coordinated collections you could build over time

  • Affordable pricing without looking cheap

  • Australian-designed pieces that suited local tastes

  • Wide variety from traditional to contemporary styles

The change came from parent company Wesfarmers’ decision to merge Target with Kmart, insisting customers would still be satisfied.

Yet the ongoing backlash has shown the opposite, with many shoppers accusing the company of erasing choice in favour of consolidation.

Other retailers have since stepped in to fill the gap.

Bed Bath N’ Table and Adairs offer high-quality coordinated collections, TK Maxx provides discounted branded decorations, and Big W has expanded its mid-tier offerings.

Still, none have quite recreated the niche Target once held.

For older Australians, the shift represents more than lost shopping options—it feels like the loss of tradition.

Social media posts even mocked the change with videos set to horror movie music when shoppers stumbled upon Anko ranges at Target.

As Christmas 2025 approaches, the frustration shows no sign of fading.

Target has not brought back its old festive designs, and clearance sales suggest the strategy is still struggling financially.

The future of its Christmas range now depends on whether the company listens to its customers or continues down the path of sameness.

What This Means For You

In 2024, Target replaced its much-loved Christmas decorations with Kmart’s Anko brand, a move that left many shoppers disappointed. Customers complained not only about the drop in quality but also about the heartbreak of being unable to complete the coordinated collections they had built over years.

The backlash was clear when post-Christmas sales saw Anko stock heavily marked down, with some items selling for just a fraction of their original price—proof that demand was not what Target had hoped. While other retailers like Adairs, Bed Bath N’ Table, TK Maxx, and Big W have stepped in to offer alternatives, many Australians still miss the magic of Target’s Christmas aisles.

For those who cherished the tradition of adding one or two new pieces each year, this change feels like more than a retail decision—it feels like the loss of a holiday ritual.

If Target’s switch to Anko left you feeling disappointed about Christmas shopping, you’re not alone in noticing how festive traditions at the shops have been changing.

Even the way stores put up their Christmas displays has become a hot topic, with many shoppers debating whether the holiday magic is being replaced by marketing tactics.

If you’d like to see another example of how festive shopping habits are shifting, this next story dives into the controversy over when and how stores bring out their Christmas stock.

Will Target ever bring back the festive magic that once made it a Christmas favourite, or has that sparkle been lost forever?

Sometimes one has to wonder who writes this sort of nonsense. Go into a op shop around Christmas time and you can sometimes pick up beautiful decorations, which were made years ago and very good quality. If anyone ever experiences a child or grandchild being diagnosed with cancer, then they will know the definition of devastation.
That's sad if that has happened with you. It's happened with one of mine, and we're fortunate that he is still with us.

EVERY BODY IS TARGETING THE WRONG STORES
Target, KMart, office works, Bunnings , first choice liquor, home and timber group, catch of the day group, coles, Insure my ride motor cycle insurance, Blue scope distribution, Aboriginal Business Australia, Mitre 10, Myers,Wespine industries, WES CEF, Stratco Home improvements, Lump energy, Curragh coal mine, WesTrac CAT Equipment,
NOW with such a strong presence in the country, do you think that the board answers to-- it is certainly not the consumers
The largest shareholder in Wesfarmers was BlackRock Inc., an American investment management firm that owns 16 million shares.

Other major shareholders include Vanguard Group Inc. (12 million shares), Macquarie Group Ltd. (6 million shares), and AustralianSuper Pty Ltd. (5 million shares).

In total, institutional investors own over 40% of Wesfarmers’s stock.
So if you want to make a complaint make it to the ROOT source of the problem--the CEO of Wesfarmers
You may have insirance with those companies but what company actually "underwrites" them??

I would have thought that most of us would have far too many Christmas decorations by now. I’ve downsized our tree and gave most of our decorations away, I kept enough to decorate the tree and a few special favourites that have been collected over the years. I did tell my son that I was going to decorate his house this Christmas on account of being coerced into wearing a Christmas Tshirt last year. He thought that was a bit extreme, but seeing as I need to buy new shirts for this year, I think some sort of payback is required. Might have to go to Target. 😂
If you have a Best & Less store near you they have had great Christmas T-shirts equally as good in quality and design as Kmart & Target but cheaper in the past. I haven't looked at them this year. retailer own brand products are made by major manufacturers so I reckon Christmas decorations would be too

Yes, Penny, it has happened to us and luckily she is still with us. I don't have much time for those who whinge and moan about utter nonsense.

your taste is all in your mouth.

I haven't bought Xmas decorations for over 39 years.

I would prefer to buy a Tooth Fairy tree.

Why celebrate a myth? May as well celebrate Superman's birthday.... 29 February. Thankfully, it only comes once every four years!
scrooge.

I don't like shopping at Kmart now as everything is Anko brand. Will also apply to Target if they become an Anko store.
Big W offers good variety of choice and quality. Now my go to store
how dumb can one be. it all comes from china. start reading labels.

Seriously? With all the abhorrent issues in the world at the moment and a US President left to go rampant in the world, the decorations not available in Target are a real concern? o_O 🤮
that president is trying to get peace. what are you doing about that. just being rude,

It wont effect me at all as I don't shop at either. I support local by shopping at markets where the items are made or grown by the people selling them.
It is apparent that you don't check the labels on clothing.

Peace?

Like attempting to cause disruption to dozens of countries economies by imposing sanctions that will only serve to screw up the United States of Arrogance's piss poor economy and standard of living.

Stupid headline I didn’t bother reading the content waste of my precious time.🤣

Wesfarmers own the shops and they have a special deal with China to produce the ANKO brand for all of the shops they own soon you will only be able to buy ANKO in office works, Bunnings , as the products are so much cheaper that profits are so much better.
Just like Japanese products in the 60's by 2050 Chinese wages will rise and things will cost as much as every country

Well I guess if you don't want to shop at Kmart you're out of luck.
I understand it's a massive first world problem and probably adds an extra five minutes to your shopping experience.
What a drag.
Chill out, if that's the worst thing you have to worry about, consider yourself lucky.
People complain about online shopping,
because they want to try things on, now you're complaining because you have to try things on. There's no pleasing some people.
It's seems like looking for inconsequential things to complain about has become a national pastime.🤦‍♀️
I once knew this guy who upon retiring started to complain to his local council about everything and anything about 3 to 4 times a week. This went on for about 25 years until he died in his early 90s. I went through lots of the paperwork to and from council, years of it. A mountain of paperwork, amazing.

What I am getting at with this example is he was bored and had to do something with his time in retirement.
There must be lots of bored and powerless people trapped in their boring suburban life out there complaining about anything and everything.

And guess what, that does include us here complaining about the complainers, However, not to the extent of the guy I once knew.

Yes, back in the day it was Japanese until their wages went up and then it was Mexico with Thailand, India and then come China for the cheap and nasty stuff.
Having said that, I once bought a China made Bowie Knife and I was surprised of the quality, its tang went all the way through the handle and was well balanced. Another cheep China knife I got from ebay feel apart at first go.

Decorations not available are a real concern. Other cultures are stealing Christmas by saying it isn't inclusive.
So, while those of us that want to celebrate this tradition we are slowly being excluded.
Don't you all remember how the shops were decorated at Christmas when you were young, carols sung at school etc. Well, it's disappearing like the rest of our culture. I have no trouble with others doing their own thing but please stop accepting it's ok for our traditions to be sidelined.🎄🎄🎄🎄🎅🎅🎅

Quite frankly, I'm disgusted with all the stores ramping out Christmas commercialism in September! We've only just touched October, the stores are cluttered with the Yankified "Halloween" (Abreviated from All Hallows Eve -when the souls rise up from the grave to be judged. How that degenerated into this 'trick or treat' garbage I neither know nor care.)
But back to Christmas decorations - at least the stores aren't polluting our eardrums with the Christmas dirges - yet. Christmas is supposed to be a time of cheer, but the 'carols' broadcast in the shops are better suited for a funeral.

Dear member RobbyNotTheRobot, thankyou for your post. I hear what you are saying and respect your views and opinions. However, for the sake of every member engaging in conversation, let's not look at it as complaining, but more so as members just expressing their right to voice their position of disagreement. When one complains, it is not a bad thing, it sends messages to others that someone does not agree with an issue, and for personal reasons, has voiced their brave opinion or view. It only appears as a complaining because no one else is presenting the same view. The one that is complaining about the complainers, is definately a clone of the one that is complaining, trapped in their boring suburban life as you so humbly state in your post. Have a great evening. 🙏🦋

Personally, l do not believe in higher or lower quality Christmas decorations. They are all Christmas decorations made up with different shapes, sizes and colours. Whether your Christmas decorations look great or just good, well, l think it all comes down to your ability to be creative and co- ordinate colours. Who on this planet is going to go up to your Christmas decorations, and check the tag that indicates an Anko or Myers label. Is Christmas about ornaments that are made of gold, or ornaments that have a significance of peace, joy and happiness. If you are so worried about your guests seeing Anko tags on some of your Christmas decorations, just take off the Anko label, and attach Myres tag to each and every decoration, problem solved. Some less fortunate countries have never seen a Christmas tree or Christmas decorations. I think our population who complain about the quality of Christmas decorations that are sold in stores, are people who are a bit spoilt and need to show their wealth to others by saying , hey look at me, l can afford to buy the expensive Christmas decorations, therefore that makes me a better person. When l was young, my parents cut the pine tree from our garden, and brought it in as our Christmas tree. Our decorations were wrapped lollies, tied only cotton strings to decorate the tree. It was the most beautiful, fragrant Christmas tree ever. Our peace, care, happiness and love for each other as a family, along with the live garden Christmas tree, made the Christmas festive season the best, that would be remembered with sweet dear memories, for a life time. 🙏🦋
