Is This Seemingly Normal Australian Town Hiding a Terrifying Secret That’s Keeping Visitors Away?

At first glance, Walhalla looks like any other charming country town tucked away in Victoria’s Gippsland high country. With its quaint timber buildings, winding main street, and a population that barely scrapes 20, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s just another sleepy spot on the map. But beneath its picturesque surface, Walhalla harbours a chilling reputation that’s enough to send shivers down even the bravest spine.

A Haunting History: The Curse of James Mitchell’s Grave

Walhalla’s gold rush heyday may be long gone, but the town’s past refuses to rest quietly. The most infamous tale centres around the grave of James Mitchell, a 19th-century miner whose tragic end has become the stuff of legend. Mitchell met his fate in the Long Tunnel mine, crushed in a rockfall and left to die in agony. His headstone, weathered by time, bears a warning that could have been plucked straight from a gothic novel:

‘Oh, let my sudden doom, a warning be to all. And while thou bendest over my tomb, thou may’st as quickly fall.’

It’s no wonder locals whisper about 'Australia’s most cursed grave.' Over the years, stories have swirled of visitors who paid a heavy price for their curiosity—one man reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack hours after visiting the cemetery, while another tourist died in a car crash on the way home. Coincidence, or something more sinister?

Ghost Hunters Stir the Spirits

Recently, YouTuber Marcus Sutherland and his team of paranormal investigators decided to put the legends to the test. With the help of Sally May, a long-time resident and ghost tour guide, they gained after-hours access to Walhalla’s most haunted sites: the cemetery, a disused church, an abandoned school, and the gaping mouth of the old mine shaft.

Armed with EMF meters and spirit boxes, the crew braved the pitch-black cemetery in the dead of night. The air was thick with anticipation—and, if you believe the stories, something else entirely. Their equipment registered strange electromagnetic spikes, and chilling voices crackled through the static. One spirit, who identified herself as Mary, repeatedly urged the group to leave.

But it was the moment they reached James Mitchell’s grave that truly unsettled them. The temperature dropped, their gear went haywire, and an uneasy feeling crept over the group. Despite the warnings, one member couldn’t resist touching the headstone—a decision they immediately regretted. 'I’ve got a bad feeling about her touching it,' Marcus admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. 'People online say it’s all fun and games, but I genuinely feel like that moment is going to come back to haunt us.'

Fact or Folklore? The Power of a Good Ghost Story

Of course, sceptics might say it’s all just a bit of fun—tall tales spun to entertain tourists and keep the legend alive. But in a town as steeped in history as Walhalla, it’s easy to see how fact and folklore can become entwined. The tragic deaths, the eerie warnings, the unexplained phenomena: whether you believe in curses or not, there’s no denying the power of a good ghost story.

And Walhalla has more than its fair share. From the abandoned schoolhouse where children’s laughter is said to echo after dark, to the disused church that some claim is still home to restless spirits, the town is a magnet for thrill-seekers and paranormal enthusiasts alike.

Walhalla’s Silver Screen Moment

If you’re not one for ghost stories, Walhalla still has plenty to offer. The town recently found fame as the filming location for 'Ice Road 2: Road to the Sky,' starring none other than Liam Neeson. For the movie, Walhalla was transformed into a remote Nepalese village nestled in the Himalayas—a testament to its timeless, otherworldly charm.

Should You Visit Walhalla?

So, should you heed the warnings and steer clear of Walhalla? Or is the thrill of exploring one of Australia’s most haunted towns too tempting to resist? For some, the risk of a run-in with a restless spirit is all part of the adventure. For others, the stories are enough to keep them well away.

If you do decide to visit, remember to treat the town—and its legends—with respect. Whether you’re a believer or a sceptic, there’s no harm in being a little cautious around James Mitchell’s grave. After all, as the inscription says, you never know when fate might take a sudden turn.

What about “THAT” feeling you get when you go somewhere…. & you feel you’ve been there before….. even though you know you haven’t…?
This also happens to me a lot.

I use to stay with my grandparents a lot when I was younger.
Even more after my grandfather passed away.

One night I woke up & could hear someone shuffling past our bedroom door (I slept in a single bed in Nan’s room).
Next day I told Nan about it & she said it was grandpa…..

Apparently she heard it a lot & it comforted her to know grandpa was looking over her……
She used to tell me things & say that people thought she was insane because no-one believed her, but she wasn’t.
Even though I try not to say things ,stuff just comes out. Hubby hated me doing it because he saw how accurate it was and would call me a witch. It's actually against what we believe in.

That's it he was checking that it was safe. It must have meant a lot to him

It always happens . I also have when I'm doing something or in a place I start feeling like I know what's going to happen but I cut myself off.
I have let things slip out and my daughter asked how did I know that.

My grandmother was like me and I have one daughter like it as well . My daughter tries ignoring it as well .

When I ignore it to much I then dream.
But things just blurt out like the pocket watch

The pocket watch did mean a lot to my hubby’s father…as it was HIS father’s watch & he handed it down to him not long before he passed away.
So now the pocket watch is 3rd generation.
That’s why I have it in a box in our wardrobe…it would look “odd” if I displayed it.
And hubby doesn’t want anyone to steal it.

Why is it predominately women who believe in this folklore?
My point has been proven.

I believe people who have experienced difficult times, people who know how to show empathy, who are very sensitive, who are strongly connected to their faith and people who may have had a near death experience, that has made them become immune to any fear of the unknown, are the kind of people, who will develop a sixth sense, who will pick up on spiritual entities . It's almost like a mental transference from this world into the spiritual world. They pick up a kind of aura, a breeze, a feeling of warmth and even strong intrusive thoughts, telling one that danger may be waiting ahead. All of these unexplained signs, can come to us from someone in the spiritual world, that is looking over us, who is protecting us, or just greeting us as they miss us so much. That's why it is good to always say in the evenings, may our dear departed ones rest in peace. My life has been a rollercoaster with many experiences of reaching high levels of success, too looking at death in the eyes. On both good and bad experiences, I always had a strong sense of a good spiritual entity that was beside me during great times of happiness, as these are times when one does not worry about possible dangers. Other times when I would feel a strong spiritual entity, was at times when I looked at death in the eyes, where the spiritual entity helped me cope and endure the pain as best as possible. Since I am still here, I guess I still have much more to help and assist others who are part of my life, and much to accomplish for myself. 🙏🦋

When I was in my early 20’s, I lived in Ballarat at the time, and I went to Melbourne to see a Clairvoyant.

She said that I was easy to read.

She told me things about my childhood that frightened me as I didn’t even tell anyone much about my life….and so much of it was true.

She told me things that would happen to me throughout my life…. which most has happened….. and some things are still happening.

She was expensive to go to….but well worth the experience.

Walhalla was among the first places we visited when we arrived in Australia.
It's a very interesting place and we were not affected by the stories of lingering ghosts and curses. I also visited Port Arthur which, I learnt later, was a frightening place to some people.
I believe the ghost/spirit stories I have heard but I haven't heard of dangerous or violent encounters.

I'm a Christian ✝️ and I had a near death experience, an anaephylactic reaction to anaesthetic ,I died 3 times on the operating table after a miscarriage and haemorrhaging . I saw my mother inlaw who took the baby from me and told me to go back that I was needed to take care of hubby ( her son) and my 9 children. I had never dreamt of her before that or after.
I woke up on life support after being in an induced coma

Hubby and I went to Port Arthur on a cruise. As we stepped off the boat we thought it was a beautiful place until we started walking further.

I could feel so many presence and a lot of sadness.
I felt very overwhelmed with sadness.
As we walked through the park along the pathway I felt eyes on us.
Then as we toured the old churches and houses I knew there were spirits there.

Then the prison I felt there was so much anger . Even my husband who doesn't believe in it said he felt strange there and never wants to go back

I have a friend who is a medium (I always say Im a large after I say that lol). She used to work with my husband many years ago and we lost contact. Anyway a friend of mine said she’d been to see a medium and she was awesome. When she said her name I said I know her. She’s like no, it’s not the same person, she speaks to spirits. I got in touch with her and told her what my other friends had said and she laughed. She said no one would believe me if I told them I had a forklift licence lol. She is very good and we quite often have a chat about spirits that are around us. It was very interesting to hear of your experiences, thanks for sharing

I went to see a male medium. The first thing he said was “whose anniversary is the 7th March”, which was the next day. It was my sister and Brother in law’s (who had passed) wedding anniversary. He got many other things right including details of my husband’s prostrate cancer surgery but he blew me away with details of my then unborn grandson. I didn’t say my DIL was pregnant. I just asked when I might get another grandchild. First he said ten months. I laughed and said I don’t think Mum would be too happy. He laughed too. and said “10 days”. He also said his name, Ryan. Now no one knew what is name was as mum and dad had thrown many names around so decided to keep it a secret till he was born - which was exactly 10 days later.

Some of those photos are quite “haunting”🫣
They are, I think Port Arthur has to be the most haunted place in Australia
