Is This Seemingly Normal Australian Town Hiding a Terrifying Secret That’s Keeping Visitors Away?

At first glance, Walhalla looks like any other charming country town tucked away in Victoria’s Gippsland high country. With its quaint timber buildings, winding main street, and a population that barely scrapes 20, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s just another sleepy spot on the map. But beneath its picturesque surface, Walhalla harbours a chilling reputation that’s enough to send shivers down even the bravest spine.

A Haunting History: The Curse of James Mitchell’s Grave

Walhalla’s gold rush heyday may be long gone, but the town’s past refuses to rest quietly. The most infamous tale centres around the grave of James Mitchell, a 19th-century miner whose tragic end has become the stuff of legend. Mitchell met his fate in the Long Tunnel mine, crushed in a rockfall and left to die in agony. His headstone, weathered by time, bears a warning that could have been plucked straight from a gothic novel:

‘Oh, let my sudden doom, a warning be to all. And while thou bendest over my tomb, thou may’st as quickly fall.’

It’s no wonder locals whisper about 'Australia’s most cursed grave.' Over the years, stories have swirled of visitors who paid a heavy price for their curiosity—one man reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack hours after visiting the cemetery, while another tourist died in a car crash on the way home. Coincidence, or something more sinister?

Ghost Hunters Stir the Spirits

Recently, YouTuber Marcus Sutherland and his team of paranormal investigators decided to put the legends to the test. With the help of Sally May, a long-time resident and ghost tour guide, they gained after-hours access to Walhalla’s most haunted sites: the cemetery, a disused church, an abandoned school, and the gaping mouth of the old mine shaft.

Armed with EMF meters and spirit boxes, the crew braved the pitch-black cemetery in the dead of night. The air was thick with anticipation—and, if you believe the stories, something else entirely. Their equipment registered strange electromagnetic spikes, and chilling voices crackled through the static. One spirit, who identified herself as Mary, repeatedly urged the group to leave.

But it was the moment they reached James Mitchell’s grave that truly unsettled them. The temperature dropped, their gear went haywire, and an uneasy feeling crept over the group. Despite the warnings, one member couldn’t resist touching the headstone—a decision they immediately regretted. 'I’ve got a bad feeling about her touching it,' Marcus admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. 'People online say it’s all fun and games, but I genuinely feel like that moment is going to come back to haunt us.'

Fact or Folklore? The Power of a Good Ghost Story

Of course, sceptics might say it’s all just a bit of fun—tall tales spun to entertain tourists and keep the legend alive. But in a town as steeped in history as Walhalla, it’s easy to see how fact and folklore can become entwined. The tragic deaths, the eerie warnings, the unexplained phenomena: whether you believe in curses or not, there’s no denying the power of a good ghost story.

And Walhalla has more than its fair share. From the abandoned schoolhouse where children’s laughter is said to echo after dark, to the disused church that some claim is still home to restless spirits, the town is a magnet for thrill-seekers and paranormal enthusiasts alike.

Walhalla’s Silver Screen Moment

If you’re not one for ghost stories, Walhalla still has plenty to offer. The town recently found fame as the filming location for 'Ice Road 2: Road to the Sky,' starring none other than Liam Neeson. For the movie, Walhalla was transformed into a remote Nepalese village nestled in the Himalayas—a testament to its timeless, otherworldly charm.

Should You Visit Walhalla?

So, should you heed the warnings and steer clear of Walhalla? Or is the thrill of exploring one of Australia’s most haunted towns too tempting to resist? For some, the risk of a run-in with a restless spirit is all part of the adventure. For others, the stories are enough to keep them well away.

If you do decide to visit, remember to treat the town—and its legends—with respect. Whether you’re a believer or a sceptic, there’s no harm in being a little cautious around James Mitchell’s grave. After all, as the inscription says, you never know when fate might take a sudden turn.

I for one believe in ghosts.

I’ve had 2 disturbing events happen to me in the past which no-one could give me a reason for them happening.

One event has surely shaken me beyond anything.

And no- one….. NO-ONE, will ever try telling me that I was dreaming or making stories up.

Same, Many years ago, I was going through a few problems, regarding my Husband and Stepson. Nana, (passed away a number of years ago) from my previous marriage, came to me one night, told me `everything will come right`. And it did. Stepson and myself became great friends.

Have had numerous events happen to me too!

Quick!

Break out the ouija boards, the divining rods and tarot cards!

We are all going to a Horror Movie on a Freaky Friday....

Why is it predominately women who believe in this folklore?

I guess Liam Neeson didn’t seem to mind the ghosts. He was shooting a movie there not long ago. I really want to go, I’ve heard it’s a very pretty town. Not too far from us

My last experience was about 10 years ago.
I was in our bathroom ensuite when I heard (what I thought was my husband) go into our walk-in-wardrobe…
I heard the door open then the light went on. I thought he was looking for an item of clothing to wear the next day.
I started talking to him & went to the door as he didn’t answer me.
The light was still on in our wardrobe & I saw someone walk around the corner & in to the passage.
I raced to the passage but no-one was there.
I then went into our lounge room, & hubby & our daughter were there watching the telly.
I asked him if he went into our wardrobe & he said he didn’t leave the lounge room……
I am always closing our wardrobe door whenever hubby leaves it open now, as it gives me the creeps to see the door open after that last experience.

And….. if anyone thinks I was imagining it……. I wasn’t.

I believe you. My good friend who died many years ago lets me know she’s still around from time to time

Spirits do exist but the question is are they good or are they evil.

I've had a few experiences.

No 1. My boyfriend ( now hubby ) and I was watching a late night movie in the house I grew up in. I got up to use the bathroom and walked quietly down the hall as my grandparents were sleeping and their room was opposite the bathroom. I got to the door and it was closed but no light was on. ( light would shine through the keyhole) the door was always left opened unless someone was in there.

I could hear water running and it seemed loud. I looked in my grandparents room but they were sound asleep. I rushed back into the loungeroom to get my boyfriend. I was more worried that someone had broken in through the window.

My boyfriend opened the door and turned the light on. The window was closed and locked and the basin tap was running full blast.

In the morning I told my grandparents and they told me they never woke up durning the night. The my grandfather said, " well blow me down, it was Jack" my grandfathers best friend Jack passed away at 4 pm the day before in hospital from lung cancer. My grandfather was with him when he passed . A joke between them was when tge first one passed they would try to leave a sigh like a running tap.

No 2 . It was 11 am one sunny October morning in 1991. I was wiping down the table when I saw a grey figure looking at me. It was standing in front of my oven. As soon as I saw it, it vanished. I remember going through my house saying it wasn't welcomed and to leave my house. I then went out to tell hubby who was in the garden ( it was his day off) of course he tried to make excuses eg must have been the light in your eyes ect.
I went inside to call my grandmother and as soon as I said to her, you won't believe what I just saw. She cut me off and told me exactly what I saw. I was gobsmacked I asked her how, she said because it was now at her place. It stayed with her for the next 8 weeks. She would see it standing in the doorway while she watched TV. She had even seen it after she had been to Riverwood and was walking home through Peakhurst Park.
She actually felt scared. I tried to convince her to stay at mine. I was 20 weeks pregnant with 5 young kids so it was hard for me to stay at hers.

I called around and ended up talking to someone from a spiritual church. They told me the colour grey indicated someone was ready to pass but won't let go. We straight away thought of my grandfather who was just put into a nursing home. We had been told 18 months before that he was dying.

Then the 2nd of December 1991 exactly 8 weeks since the grey figure appeared my grandmother suddenly passed away.

Strange didn't end there. Over tge next week as we were preparing her funeral every time my uncles wife had a shower it would go scorching hot and burn her. This only happened to her. My grandmother didn't like her.

I had given nan a wall clock which was the last supper and the clock ran by batteries. It stopped working and she took it to The jewlers store in Riverwood and was told it couldn't be fixed. She took it home and put it back up on the wall and even though it didn't work she lived it and kept it as a picture.

Now a couple of days after she passed we were all sitting around the dining table when my aunty asked us wasn't the clock broken I said it was. We thought it was strange that it was now working. My uncle took it down to adjust the time , what we saw was ,there were no batteries in the clock. We couldn't workout how it was working. It stopped working a couple of days later and never worked again

I have plenty more stories to tell.

I think unless you have experienced something then it is hard to understand

Did you buy the wardrobe new ? I'm sensing it belonged to someone else or you had something in your wardrobe that was someone's that had passed

We purchased our first house in 1982 in Lakemba, nsw. I remember loving it straight away even though it was old.
I asked the real estate agent if someone had died in there. He said no and how the owner was single and in a nursing home.
The walls had beautiful lights everywhere and there were lots of PowerPoint's. I still sensed that there was a spirit in the house and it had something to do with the lights.

8 weeks later we moved in. At that time we had one child. Hubby was a shunter on the railway and did shift work including night shifts. I would often feel someone looking at me and I would often wake up in the middle of the night feeling someone there.

I did feel a little scared but somehow I felt it wouldn't cause harm

A few weeks later we had a new oven delivered abd the elderly man from 2 doors down was at the front when it was delivered. After talking to hubby he told him that he was a retired electrician and that he would install it.
He came back the next afternoon abd installed it. He then asked did we notice all the PowerPoint's. He then went on to say the owner before the one we purchased from was an electrician and was the one who put all the lights and power points in and how he was electrocuted and died in the house. I didn't want to know which room but I felt it was the bathroom.

We sold that house in 1989 to buy a bigger house in Roselands and even today both hubby and myself dream of that house like we shouldn't have sold it.

No Suzanne Rose.
It is a walk-in-wardrobe. We built our house 20 years ago.

But I totally believe you with what you have just written.

Like you said…..it’s hard for people to understand if they have never experienced anything abnormal themselves.

My late mother-in-law did to me too. I really miss her.
I am aware people make a joke of it, and honestly feel sorry for them... they don't know what they're missing.

I do have a few treasured items in our wardrobe, from some special people who gave me things while they were alive. I don’t put them out on show as they would look “odd”.
Maybe I should….?

I use to stay with my grandparents a lot when I was younger.
Even more after my grandfather passed away.

One night I woke up & could hear someone shuffling past our bedroom door (I slept in a single bed in Nan’s room).
Next day I told Nan about it & she said it was grandpa…..

Apparently she heard it a lot & it comforted her to know grandpa was looking over her……
She used to tell me things & say that people thought she was insane because no-one believed her, but she wasn’t.
