Still Love Your Phone? Here Are the Best SIM-Only Deals in Australia Right Now

Still paying too much for your phone each month? You’re not alone, and the good news is, you don’t have to.

If you already have a phone you’re happy with, switching to a SIM-only plan* could help you save hundreds of dollars a year.

Because let’s be honest, have you seen the price of new phones lately? If you want the latest model, you’re often looking at $1,000 or more upfront, or locking yourself into a contract for years for a new phone that only offers barely noticeable upgrades.

If your current phone still does everything you need, there’s no need to replace it just yet. You can keep using the phone you know and trust, and simply switch to a SIM-only plan that suits your needs*—some start at just $12 a month!

Whether you only use your phone to call family and check emails, or you like to browse and stream 4K videos, a SIM-only plan can suit your needs (and your budget).*

We’ve teamed up with our good friends at WhistleOut* to round up some of the best SIM-only deals available right now* so you can save without giving up the phone you already know how to use.

Plans under $20 a month*

If you’re not a heavy internet user and mainly use your phone for calls, texts, and the occasional email, you can easily keep your monthly phone bill below $20.

Plenty of budget-friendly SIM-only plans give you unlimited calls and texts, plus a decent amount of data* for everyday use. Some providers offer introductory discounts, helping you save even more in the first few months.

Plans under $30 a month*

If you like to browse the web more regularly, use maps, check the news, or scroll a little more on social media, you might find a plan with more data.*

These mid-range plans* are perfect for Aussies who want more flexibility without stretching the budget too far.

Plans under $40 a month*

For those who want to make the most of their phones, like streaming shows, video chatting with family, listening to music, or even using mobile data to connect a tablet or laptop, there are still great-value options that won’t break the bank.*

Many providers now offer large-data SIM-only plans under $40 a month, including options with 40GB, 50GB or more.* Some even run on the major telco networks, giving you better coverage in more remote or regional areas.

And because you’re not paying for a handset or locked into a long-term contract, you can switch or downgrade any time if your needs change.

With so many affordable SIM-only plans on the market*, there’s no reason to stick with an overpriced plan, especially if you already have a phone you’re comfortable using.

Whether you’re a light user who just needs the basics or likes to stay connected all day, there’s a plan out there to suit your needs—and your budget*: no contracts, no expensive upgrades, and no unnecessary extras.

Switching is easier than you might think, and some telcos even let you keep your existing number too!

So, if you’re looking to cut your monthly phone bill without sacrificing your connection, a SIM-only plan could be the smart move.*

If i'm buying a sim only plan i want coverage more than anything and i have found the best coverage comes from Telstra. My spare phone on a $30/month sim only prepaid was the only phone that gave me coverage on our recent half lap of Australia. My Optus Samsung 25+ contracted phone was useless in the outback.
We both have changed to Boost mobile, which has some sort of link to Telstra. My husband was very reluctant to leave Telstra as he has a heart loop recorder thing implanted in his chest, and the monitoring works through his mobile. That was why our son recommended Boost, as his friend in Gippsland uses them, and has found the coverage to be excellent, even okay when they had storms & blackouts last year. So far it’s worked well for us, and we renew annually by auto deduction. I’d never remember to do it monthly. I don’t use my mobile a lot, usually only for calls & texts, but my husband uses his all the time, he reads the news, researches stuff etc.

I am paying $70 a month & don’t know why. I am with Telstra but do not use the internet through Telstra. I think it is worth a phone call to find out why.
try Kogan...I did $130for 1 year. works out..$10 80per month pay annually never had a problem unlimited calls text etc very good service

Me too. I'm a Kogan girl. Best decision I ever made.
Once you have a fairly decent phone (Kogan sell them too) the prepaid world is your oyster.

We bought our SIM cards through Woolworths and have their Rewards card. Once a month we can do a big shop, and get 10% discount. The discount usually pays back the cost of our phone plan. Woolworths uses Telstra network for coverage. We're very happy 😊

Yes, well... if cost was the only factor then they look like good, cheap deals. Unfortunately, coverage, reliability and backup are also super important. If you live or travel out of town, many are useless as you can't get a signal. Vodafone is a prime example, according to friends

My wife and I used to pay Telstra $50 - $60 per month each for our mobiles. A relation showed us that going Prepaid sim only we cut that down to $30/month each. Then Telstra sneakily upped that to $35 two years ago then $39 last year. The only reason we use the big T is that when playing at “grey nomad” we need the full coverage that they can provide. If anyone can tell me which other telco can provide the same coverage as Telstra we would be very interested. All the telcos that use the Telstra network have a “watered down” service of Telstra coverage.

While the TPG deal looks cheap when you go to their website and read their terms and conditions it’s only if you bundle it with an nbn plan. We find that Aldi $19 a month works well.

This article fails to mention that the ten dollar per month goes to 25 dollars after 6 months.

I looked at the plans under $20. Sorry but they are only a short time fix. They all provide a low price but for 6mths or 12 mths then the prices are doubled. For me that would only be a savings for that short period. SO no real benefit unless I changed providers every time the price was going to be increased. I feel this article is misleading and very disappointed.
