Bendigo Bank to close 10 branches, leaving some regional towns without financial services

The closure of 10 Bendigo Bank branches across Australia by late October will mean the end of in-person banking for residents in five regional communities.

Australia's Finance Sector Union (FSU) says the closures are a "slap in the face" in areas already seeing a decline in services from multiple industries.


It comes after the federal government struck a deal with the big four banks to keep their regional branches open until at least mid-2027.

That deal was made in February 2025 in response to an avalanche of regional bank branch closures since 2017.

In Victoria branches will close in Ballarat Central, Bannockburn, Malop Street in Geelong, Korumburra, South Melbourne and Yarram.

In Queensland branches will close in Malanda and Tully North and in Tasmania Kings Meadows and Queenstown.

History repeats itself​

Bendigo Bank's Bannockburn branch is the last brick-and-mortar bank in the south-west Victorian town.

Golden Plains Shire Mayor Owen Sharkey said the impending closure felt like deja vu for locals, who were left without a bank for a year between Westpac shutting its branch in 1997 and Bendigo Bank opening in 1998.

"This is the only bank that services not just Bannockburn, but all of our surrounding township, so it's come as a very abrupt announcement," Cr Sharkey said.

"A lot of people are upset with the news … the next closest bank will be back in Geelong."


Bannockburn sits within the Golden Plains Shire, which has one of the fastest growing populations of all regional local government areas (LGAs) in Victoria.

"Whenever I go in you've got four or five people waiting in [the branch], so it's not like it was a completely empty bank," Cr Sharkey said.

"There is a need and want there."

The mayor said it was disappointing that the community was not given more time to adapt.

"Bendigo Bank did a fantastic job with community grants in the area … the community banks would have put in close to a million dollars over that last 20 years," Cr Sharkey said.

"When you lose the likes of a Bendigo Bank it really is a sort of a kick in the guts for the community."

Union calls for regulation change​

Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Limited reported a statutory net profit after tax of $216.8 million for the half year ending December 2024.

Finance Sector Union (FSU) national secretary Julia Angrisano said the decision to close the branches was "a slap in the face" for those who relied on them.

"This is an incredibly disturbing development and does not bode well for the future of Bendigo Bank's presence in regional Australia," Ms Angrisano said.

"For a bank that proudly has its regional centre hometown as part of its name and is fondly known for its community branch network, this decision feels very 'big bank' for all the wrong reasons."

Ms Angrisano said the union wanted to see legislation change to regulate banking as an essential service, as recommended by the Senate inquiry into regional banking that handed down its final report in 2024.

She said the union had written about the issue to local MPs in affected towns, as well as the assistant treasurer and the minister for financial services.

"It is critical that the federal government step in and protect bank workers and customers, given the banks have proven themselves to be incapable of doing anything other than putting profits and shareholders first," Ms Angrisano said.

Bendigo Bank responds​

A spokesperson for Bendigo Bank said the company was "proud of its regional heritage" and maintained more branches per customer than any other Australian bank.

"To continue delivering for our customers and communities, we must ensure our branches are adequately supported and resourced," the spokesperson said.

The upcoming closure of Bendigo Bank's Queenstown branch in western Tasmania leaves its customers a more than two-and-a-half-hour drive from their nearest branch.

West Coast Council Mayor Shane Pitts told the ABC he was disappointed the news was already out in the community before the council was informed.

"There was a community bank and then that was handed to the Bendigo Bank, which was a few years ago now," Cr Pitts said.

"I was skeptical then that one day this bank would close.

"They assured us that that wasn't going to be the case."

He said even before the announcement of the closure, the branch was not offering a full suite of services and opening hours had been cut back.

"Some of the comments they've [Bendigo Bank] made in the letter to us is about people not using the bank — well you can't use the bank if it's not open," Cr Pitts said.

When queried about the closure of the Ballarat branch, the Bendigo Bank spokesperson said the proximity of other branches was a factor in decision making.

I opened a Westpac account 6 years ago and haven't been in a branch since. I don't use cash, so don't need ATM's, and just use their debit card on my phone.

All the information I need about my account is right in front of me on their app.

You do know this is just another way to make us use the internet to buy stuff and not to use cash , I use cash everywhere. But I still have to go to the bank to get the amount out of what I want.
CASH IS KING for a little longer fingers crossed.

To withdraw more money than ATM allow me. Then I had to go into the bank more than once because they, like ATM, have a lower limit than before.
I hope you never have to find out that online isn't always the be all and end all of certain life emergencies.
No problem there. I have a local bank specialist hub for any needs I require. I was disappointed with another local bank with their internal ATM's. I was waiting in line where several asian customers withdrew all the cash from the machines, so no go for me. Obviously, their Armaguard would bring more, but I couldn't wait. Instead, I went to the supermarket and withdrew it.

A couple of years ago, I wanted to make a small withdrawal at a ATM and waited for the Asian woman using the machine. And waited and waited and waited....

She was withdrawing various amounts from a number of cards that would have rivalled a casino!

I gave up and walked two kilometres to the next nearest ATM.

The last and only time I was at the newer Sydney casino most of the gamblers where of Asian appearance followed by Italian gangster pinstripe suit types with gangster type moles groupies right out of a old gangster film, not kidding here.
Anyway, the amount of cash the Asians where gambling was nothing short of mind-blowing. Especially at the Roulette tables. Maybe 20-30 tables and me just standing close to one counted a few 10 thousand in about 30mins I was was there and I missed counting lots more to fast down the little slot. What is the bet that most there are money laundering? Pun intended.

As long as you don't want to apply for a business loan, mortgage, personal loan, insurance queries, transactions disputes, credit card, open a savings account or a term deposit, refinancing, superannuation, foreign exchange or eCommerce issues and inquiries, you should be right to go.

Bank@Post is a poor alternative to an in-bank experience. All you can do is withdraw and deposit cash, make balance inquiries and pay bills.
I don't know if this is everywhere but I recently got some cash out at our local country Post Office, for the first time and was charged $6.00.
When I shopped at the Iocal IGA and asked for $50 cash out I was charged $7.
What a rort. We have a Commonwealth Bank but no ATM and seeing I don't bank with the Commonwealth I can't get cash there.
I've been doing research on rates for fixed term investments. I discovered a lot of places, one in particular, that are paying much better rates than any of the major and well known banks.
For anybody whose interested Judo Bank, who I'd never heard of is paying 4.35% for 6 months. They come highly rated, 9.7, and pay that rate for amounts from $1,000 to $250,000. They are also covered by the same government guarantee for sums up to $250 000. that all the major banks are covered by.

In Beenleigh we did have every bank but since COVID we have lost ANZ, NAB, Suncorp, and now Heritage Bank just recently and all have said it is because of online banking.
All branches had queues out the door most times, yet they said people weren't using them and all when asked by the local paper abut closures said no, they wouldn't be closing.
We are now left with Westpac, Bendigo Bank and CBA hopefully they will stay but I have my doubts.

When you can come into a bank, and have a face to face conversation regarding your banking matters, that's when you know you are on safe grounds. However, when banks have closed down, and you have no alternative to comucicate with the bank, other than by phone or the internet, well, thats where the doors to scammers can slowly open up. It is hard to trust someone with your money when you can not visually see them. You just have to trust that the person with whom you are talking with on the phone, is helping you in a manner that is in your best interest, and not in their best interest. Another negative, there are times when the elderly may have difficulty and frustration using the phone, or use internet banking to check their pension payments, or to use the method of direct debit banking for paying bills, all of which require up to date knowledge using the internet for your banking requirements. This bigger picture here is, more and more banks, as well as other official departments, have been taken over by a younger generation of staff and managers, who have have been given the power to make big decisions to close banks. These young managers and staff appear to lack morals and respect, and can not empathise with the struggles of the elderly. The only older people positioned in banks are the CEOs, who really don't care much about anyones struggles. Banks have made a decision to pack up and leave, without a thought of how the elderly are going to use internet banking, as no one has showed them how to log into, and use internet banking in a safe way, to avoid being scammed. So now how safe are the elderly to make money withdrawals from ATMs, in public areas, where drug infested people may be walking by in desperation for money. How can banks be so dam self centred and money hungry, and not care how the elderly will do their banking, now that more and more banks are closing up. Have bank CEOs forgotten that is was the elderly who saved money with their banks all their lives, that made banks so wealthy today. All I can say is that I believe in Karma so much. 🙏🦋
 
It would seem from all the replies that only a limited number of people are up to speed with what all the free world well so called free world governments have agreed to and put in place after their world meeting after covid19. They including the Australian Govt have agreed to THE RESET! If you have never noticed, it was organised at your day of birth where in about 1930 all berths from that time forward were to be registerred and given a number with your name printed in all capital letters, so from that day onwards all and any legal document you are any part of is in capital letters even your drivers licence , credit/debit cards or bank details in short this as it is now with the finance sector happening in parts of Canada and China where cash is being removed and digital currency is replacing Cash. Credit and debit cards etc. This way the Taxes in the world can be traced as well as where people are and what they are purchasing even if you owe money or late for repayments which in China they are restricting peoples credit and travel to outer provinces if they are in debt for any serious length of time with debts faltered, using number plate recognition which we have being rolled out in all states of Australia as well as face recognition etc. AI is going to control peoples lives as the giga wealthy and govt have been advised to do. Same as mr Gates and his massive investment in labs controlling and producing viruses as well as his large funding for covid which is documented to not do as it was designed to do apart from what his speaches contain about reducing the world population and produce chemically formulated meat and hamburger meats for the massive consumption which the livestock markets cannot keep up with in supply. Wake up people the bank closures are suppose to be some what reduced further and ready for the first phase in 2030 and 2035.++ Any one holding cash will be deamed as worthless paper just like when we lost the 1 and 2cent coins. People need to get involved and take more notice because the media won't report it until it is too late because it is already law in place as far as I can find.
