What Would The Grandkids Say: 'Go off'

Time to decode the latest lingo from the young ones!

Today’s phrase: 'Go off'

Nope, it’s not about the milk in your fridge turning sour! 😄 In Gen Z-speak, ‘go off’ means to express yourself passionately — whether it’s praising someone for doing something amazing, or letting out a fiery rant when something gets on your nerves.

Example: 'Did you see her performance? She really went off!'
Or: 'He went off in the meeting about the new policy — didn’t hold back!'

It’s all about big energy — think cheering someone on or letting your feelings fly.

💬 Have you ever 'gone off' about something recently? Or maybe seen someone go off in a memorable way? Share your stories below!

As with so many old phrases, this one is simply repurposed, with a slight shift.

He went off his face when the shop didnt have his favourite product.
It retains the sense of passionate expression but ironically pop and nanna probably used the same phrase themselves.

The difference is  focus: previously it suggested anger; now it suggests positive passion.

As you say, it's all repurposed. My grandchildren are constantly surprised that I 'get it'.
