Australia's healthcare system could change forever with Labor's new 24/7 service

Access to urgent healthcare is something many Australians rely on, especially outside standard hours.

As the federal election draws closer, new proposals are being unveiled that could reshape how after-hours medical care is delivered across the country.

Here’s what’s being promised—and why it could make a major difference.

Australians in need of urgent medical care after hours would soon be able to access a free telehealth GP appointment under a major election commitment Anthony Albanese planned to reveal.

The Prime Minister prepared to announce the plan at a Labor rally in Western Sydney on Sunday, marking the final week before voters head to the polls on 3 May.

The existing Healthdirect service, called Nurse-on-Call in Victoria, would be rebranded to the new 1800MEDICARE hotline, which was scheduled to launch on 1 January 2026.

The Labor government also pledged an additional $204.5 million to strengthen Medicare-funded telehealth services nationwide.

The 1800MEDICARE service would provide 24/7 access to registered nurses for health advice, with referrals to daytime GPs, Medicare Urgent Care Clinics, or local hospitals when necessary.

If a patient needed urgent GP care, the nurse would refer them to a free phone or video consultation with a GP, available all hours on weekends and between 6:00 pm and 8:00 am on weeknights.

Anthony Albanese said: ‘At this election Australia faces a clear choice: a stronger Medicare with more bulk billing and more free urgent care under Labor, or more cuts to Medicare under Peter Dutton’s Liberals.’

He added: ‘Life isn’t 9 to 5. With 1800MEDICARE, neither is health care.’

‘Whether your family needs urgent or ongoing health care, under Labor, Medicare will be there for all Australians, in every community,’ Mr Albanese said.

Health Minister Mark Butler cited data from NSW Health that suggested a statewide telehealth service could prevent about 85,000 unnecessary emergency room visits each year.

Mr Butler said Healthdirect figures showed about 84 per cent of patients who accessed a telehealth GP appointment did not subsequently visit an emergency department.

Using national projections, Mr Butler said roughly 250,000 Australians could avoid an unnecessary trip to hospital emergency departments through the new hotline.

He said: ‘When illness or injury strikes in your family, 1800MEDICARE will be there–a 24/7 health advice line and after-hours GP telehealth service, backed by Medicare.’

He added: ‘With Medicare Urgent Care Clinics and 1800MEDICARE, free urgent care will be a 20-minute drive away for four in five Australians, and a phone call away for every Australian.’

During the election campaign, Labor warned that a Coalition government would risk cuts to health services, although Opposition Leader Peter Dutton had promised to maintain current health spending levels.

The Coalition confirmed it would also honour Labor’s $8.5 billion investment to boost bulk-billed GP appointments by 18 million annually, with a target of nine in 10 GP visits being free by 2030.

It also committed to tripling the number of fully bulk-billed clinics and maintaining Labor’s pledge to cap PBS-listed prescriptions at $25 per script.

Wake up Australia 🇦🇺 you can’t believe anything that comes out of this CON MANS mouth 👄, we have heard it all before, nothing new . His other clinics have not worked on the news complaints about not being open the hours specified .Gullable ? People are born everyday, just don’t be one of them.

I don’t know the price of eggs; but I will soon know the price of a red herring. How will this new Mediscare be communicated immediately to community and what will it cost? Another knee jerk reaction to a broken system this government enabled… not telling us about the cuts to Medicare it implemented left thousands of patients either out of pocket or NEGLECTING their immediate health needs because they simply could not afford to follow up their doctors’ recommended digital imaging etc!😡

at least Albo tries. I'd just like to find a doctor who doesn't tell me that I'm in "the too hard basket". I had an amazing doctor for over 25 years but went to his funeral a couple of weeks ago. I've had no caring doctor for the last 4 1/2 years since Werner retired. So far 7 doctors have turned me down. Maybe I shouldn't take my medical reports to show them but I can't see the point in having to go through all the tests to prove what we already know.

well, do aggree wth Gamry, used to be able to attend a visit to my GP, for at or about 30 years , used to be 2 but the senior GP died and the clinicwas sold and the other GP was still involved, but last year she retired, since then things have altered,no longer bulk billing, so looked elsewhere, wow, what a mess , most do not bulk bill, along with that most want to charge a double fee on introducing the first visit. then varied fees from then , so at the moment that puts me in no man land, as they do not state it, but get the feeling, they are not interested in aged persons, when I read that our idiot leader, is babbling on about free health care, I become a littleangry at this [[[[[bs] rubbish, well anyway that is my bit.

Last nights episode on ch 7 , Albo and Dutton price of eggs 🥚 I wouldn’t know the price either ,so what’s all the B/S about not knowing , just a red herring haha.
In my local Cole’s yesterday there were a total of 5 dozen eggs for sale, ranging In different prices for cage , free range, half dozen etc. prices were ridiculously high even for 6 and I walked on past ! How they expected the pm or the opposition leader to know the price when the last thing either of them would do right now, or ever was to notice the price of anything in a supermarket! Most males wouldn’t have known either !

His lips moved so he is telling porkie pies..remember it's election time..... they will say anything..... let's have some MEASURABLE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES to be reviewed every 3 months.....

Wow, you guys at SDC really love Labor & their Medicare lies. Where's the asterisk on the link to the article (I'm assuming you're getting paid to spruik this Labor propaganda)?

Let's be clear, Labor have manufactured the GP shortage, BB crisis & lack of after hours doctor availability.

For instance, Mark Butler (& Albo) and their predecessors have under-insured us through Medicare for years. Funding us through Medicare's their jobs! But they don't get specific credit for it. So they underfund your local Dr for attending you after hours (& in hours - hence the gap fees), then having manufactured a crisis come riding in to "save us" with their so-called Medicare Urgent Care Clinics (UCC). The preliminary data's there, but they won't release it before the election. The $Billions divided by the number of visits shows they will pay $274 to the doctor to see you at an UCC. This service is exactly the same as what your GP/clinic used to do, but Medicare only insures you for for $127.25 (less in some instances) if you stay local through Medicare.

So if it's good enough for an UCC doctor where you have to go to them & see someone who doesn't know your history, surely it's good enough to pay your local GP where you live the same money. But no, that's just doing their job, not getting any political mileage & personal special credit.

And here's the kicker, for all those whinging that their local doctor doesn't see them after hours, the doctors for these UCC are coming from "real" general practices aggravating the GP shortage instead of solving it! And why not? The politicians are paying proper rates & even saying good things about them, the opposite of usual poli behaviour!

So there's no money available for proper funding of General Practice, but endless funds available for the better political mileage of pet politician projects - even when it funds THE SAME THING.

It's a con job (as is announcing the already existing nurse on-call system as a new project).

I totally agree with all you have written. It’s not good that SDC are writing this stuff and pushing Labor, not good at all. Also how can one trust his promises I’m still waiting for was it $270 or so for Utilities from last electio!

I know that I’d not feel completely comfortable or assured with a Telehealth consult…..I’m sceptical that I would be speaking to an actual experienced doctor or nurse, who would be looking up the symptoms on a bespoke program or something…Silly I know, but that’s me…
