‘Our design costs the taxpayer nothing’: Is this the $5 redesign Australia should get behind?

A recent decision by the Reserve Bank of Australia has sparked growing controversy, with taxpayers footing the bill for a significant redesign.

As tensions rise, questions are being raised about the cost, the rationale, and the ongoing debate surrounding the nation's banknotes.

What started as a change to honor Indigenous culture has now become the focus of widespread criticism, with some proposing a compromise that could appease both sides of the argument.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has been under intense scrutiny after it was revealed that more than $507,000 of taxpayer money had been spent on removing the Queen’s portrait from the $5 banknote.

In 2023, the RBA announced plans to replace Queen Elizabeth II’s image with a design intended to honour the connection between First Nations peoples and their Country.

This move was met with immediate backlash, and the Australian Monarchist League (AML) stepped in with a compromise design that aimed to satisfy both the Indigenous community and supporters of the monarchy.

Philip Benwell, AML Chairman, shared: ‘Our design costs the taxpayer nothing and manages to pay tribute to both First Nations people and the King.’

He added, ‘We’ve done the Reserve Bank’s job for them.’

The proposed redesign featured Uluru on the left, wattle and the rainbow serpent in the middle, and King Charles III on the right.

The new design quickly gained traction on social media, with many voicing their opinions on the controversial changes.

Heather McPherson commented: ‘I don’t particularly like Charles but he should be on our $5 note as our beloved Queen was.’

Allan Evans called for the RBA to keep the Queen’s image, stating: ‘Put the Monarch back on $5 note.’

The design proposal echoed a similar one from 1966, when Australia’s $1 banknote featured both Queen Elizabeth II and Indigenous Australians.

The RBA was contacted for comment but did not provide a response.

This ongoing debate has highlighted the divide between those supporting the monarchy and those advocating for a more inclusive representation on Australian currency.

In a previous story, we explored the Reserve Bank of Australia's decision to update the $5 note with a fresh Indigenous design.

This move has sparked intense public discussion, especially among those who feel the monarchy should still be represented.

Whilstsoever the distinction between the first nation and the rest of us is emphsised in all walks of life in this country, we will never become one nation for all. It’s time the aboriginal community stopped putting the emphasise on what happened in the past and started living in the present. The population of today had nothing to do with the atrocities of the past so why should the present population be punished for something we had nothing to do with.
Totally agree….wouldn’t it be nice…

your racism is so much stronger that your education and your wording suggests that you are a wannabe Australian.
Your comment is incredibly belittling and insulting….Together with the other unsavoury comments you’ve made, I strongly recommend that you go back to bed and get up on the right side this time…..because your comments are not doing you any favours……I’m not perfect but you’ve crossed the line on this….in my own opinion of course…

WHY WOULD WE PAY TRIBUTE TO THE ABORIGINALS ?? of the hundreds of tribes here who was the leader/owner of the lands ? there was no land rights in those days otherwise the whole world would belong to Adam and Eve in the land where they were born and the whole world belonged to them. ...lets do that, give the whole world back to the descendants of Adam and Eve oh thats us....its time to draw a line in the sand and start from the logical existing situation as none of the origonal parties are still alive , and unite under one flag and live and grow together. as one united nation. and prosper.......time to stop being silly
I am not a descendant from a mythical pair called "Adam and Eve".

I don’t think there is anything wrong in paying a modicum tribute, or acknowledging them as the first settlers of this land, indeed I believe I read somewhere that there are still some indigenous people who have undiluted blood from their ancestors of so long ago, about 65,000 years ago (?)… What I do think is wrong is that they seem to have the government over a barrel and dancing to the tune of whatever they want, terrified of upsetting them because of something that happened a long time ago that is being constantly bandied about. Those people on both sides don’t exist anymore….the world has changed and it’s the 21st century…..no one should be living in the past anymore and I would hope that their lives could be made much better, if only they would let it………But.. I know that there are those of the indigenous people who are making an absolute killing in dollars, off the back of the troubles from years ago, so they have a vested interest in keeping it going. Only the government can do something about that and I’d like to see it as a priority so that we can all move on together, because if nothing is done there will always be division and unrest, everything will stagnate and get much worse….

Good one…I like it..

Well. Let's start with the so-called 'CASHLESS SOCIETY'..... if they truly go cashless, why spend $5,000,0000 on a note that is going to be worthless in the future.
Charles is close to death so we would be changing it again at $6,000,000.
Who in their right mind would want to look at an image of a Dick.
Meanwhile, there is no movement on the affordable housing. Get your priorities in order....
Not costing anything as the AML group has done the design for free otherwise I would say leave the same as the $5 note and just change the Queen for the King but that will cost money and the RBA has spent enough taking the Queen off. The RBA hasn't got anything to do with housing.

This is not correct, CN. Dot painting was not 'introduced' by Bardon; he simply encouraged Western Desert painters to work on board and canvas (for commercial reasons) rather than sand and bark. For years my family had a bark dot painting bought in 1961 outside Yalata Mission. Geoff Bardon was still at Sydney art school at this time. As much as I reckon Charles is the best of the current (pointless) royals and sadly dumped upon for various reasons stemming from the conservative nature of 'The Firm', I can't see any reason for not using the new RBA design. I imagine the artwork is not the major part of the re-design; anti-forgery measures are usually most of the cost.
What is the new RBA design?

that dirty bastard has NO PLACE on our money or anywhere else. He's an adulterer, an idiot who was sent here many years ago because he was an embarrassment to the family and he accuses family members of things that are not proven in Court. HE makes me heartily sick
And the same can be said about a large majority of the indigenous mongrels. They get everything for free and contribute absolutely nothing to society.

NO I'm a proud Australian who is sick of having Pommy rubbish shoved down my throat. He smashed up 2 families, screwed up his own kids, big ??? over how much he had to do with Diana's death AND IGNORED HIS OWN MOTHER who told him that horseface would never be queen and the minute his mother was dead Camilla got what she ALWAYS said she would... become queen. And you want us to respect THAT??? No thank you. One of my dearest friends is English by birth so I'm not against the English only the scandalous mob who think they are better than anyone else and even kick their own in the guts without proof.
I am English by birth & a monarchist through and through. I am no fan of Charles but he is my King so I respect him. People forget that Diana had numerous affairs. I do not condone what either Charles or Diana did but as far as smashing up 2 families & screwing up his sons - I don't agree with you. How many couples go through divorces these days? My parents did after 25 years - and my 5 siblings & I have turned out OK - I have been married 53 years. Prince William has turned out OK. Harry would be OK if he hadn't married M. The Royal family don't think they are better than anyone else and work very hard & long days. Most people of Princess Anne & her siblings including the King age have retired but not them.

What has Charles accused family members of ?

Not according to an article I read... still $5,000,000 unless proved otherwise.

What article cited $5 Million?
“The RBA is an independent central bank, meaning it makes decisions about monetary policy independently of the government of the day. This independence is crucial to prevent monetary policy from being manipulated for political gain.” Its operating costs are funded through its own earnings. Note Printing Australia produces our bank notes and is owned by the RBA.
Can't imagine why they would ask you for financial advice LOL. Maybe you should go out more and smell the roses.

There are a lot of narrow, small minded people out there, King Charles on his deathbed, his a wanker, an adulterer. Let's get things straight, he is our King show some damn respect, he doesn't look on his deathbed whilst travelling to Italy, he is looking quite healthy considering what he is going through. He also stopped seeing Camilla whilst married to Diana and although I did like Diana she was the first to have an affair whilst married. Despite that this, it is the 21st century and the only reason people still go on and on about King Charles and Queen Camilla is because they are in the public eye. As for having more aboriginal art displayed on yet another thing why, this WOKE crap has for quite some time been over the top, what happened to the aboriginal people was absolutely disgusting but for many many generations and future generations we are not taking their lands, killing them "stealing their children". I don't disrespect Aboriginal people however many particularly the youth and young adults are rude arrogant and believe like a lot of white youth and young adults that the world owes them a living. As for the change in the 5 dollar note why change it, use the money for something that is going to help the Australian people like more housing, hospitals, roads, etc

And the same can be said about a large majority of the indigenous mongrels. They get everything for free and contribute absolutely nothing to society.
Why single out Indigenous Australians? The same can be said about the many Anglo-Celtic Australians…in terms of numbers, probably more so.
