‘Not even for the dog’: ALDI shopper’s mince purchase sparks safety debate

Food safety is something most of us take for granted, especially when it comes to everyday staples.

But sometimes, what should be a routine grocery purchase turns into a cause for concern.

One shopper’s experience with a common household ingredient has sparked debate, with opinions divided on whether it’s a harmless issue or something far more unappetising.

Mince is often seen as a foolproof grocery item—straightforward to buy, easy to cook, and always predictable.

However, one Australian mum had a different experience after purchasing a pack from ALDI, sparking debate over whether her find was cause for concern or just a common occurrence.

She shared a photo of the mince in a social media group, questioning if it was safe to use.

‘Just brought this! Is it ok to use? The top is fine, this is bottom,’ she wrote.

The image showed that while the top layer appeared normal, the bottom of the mince had turned an unappetising brown colour.

Opinions on the matter were split.

Some shoppers were immediately put off, convinced that the meat was unsafe to eat.

‘Absolutely not. This looks almost par cooked—clearly been exposed to oxygen and warmth,’ one person commented.

‘Nope! Why does it look cooked?’ another asked.

‘I’m pretty casual when it comes to meat but I’d be taking that back,’ someone else wrote.

‘Not even for the dog,’ added another.

Others, however, saw no problem with the discoloured mince, arguing that people were overreacting.

‘If there is no smell and in date it is absolutely fine,’ one person stated.

‘If it doesn’t smell, it’s good,’ another agreed.

‘So many people on here need to do some research before wasting food…’ a third commented.

This wasn’t the first time ALDI shoppers had raised concerns over their mince purchases.

A similar complaint surfaced in the same social media group in May last year, with another shopper posting a photo of discoloured mince.

‘Would you say this meat is off? It doesn’t look a good colour and is still in expiry,’ she asked at the time.

Reactions were just as divided, with some urging her to throw it away while others reassured her it was still safe to eat.

Ultimately, when it comes to food safety, most people agreed on one thing—if in doubt, chuck it out.

In a previous story, shoppers were warned about a troubling scam that has been catching Aussies off guard.

What seems like a great meat deal could actually be costing buyers more than they realise.

Read on to find out how this scam works and how to avoid falling victim.

I also purchased a 1Kg pack of mince at Aldi and had to throw it out as I was unable to return it. I now will never buy any more meat from Aldi and I have also had problems with their vegies being off and unuseable. You can’t ring up the shop either, only the head office and then nobody wants to know, they just tell you to go back to the shop. Disgusting….

I raised complaints about ALDI's meat a long time ago but it all fell on deaf ears. I even stressed the point that I wasn't after money but for ALDI to make suer that their meat is edible when the prime cut steak I bought weren't for for consumption and had to be given to my dog. All I got in response was to give them the docket and proofs of my purchase for a refund when I already told them that I wasn't after a refund.
And then they wanted me to supply the carton/pack where the meat was packed in and the original invoice when they knew full well that no one would keep an empty meat try pack and do not keep the till printouts either.
I will and never ever would buy or thinking of buying a single type of meat from ALDI. Those last few lots of meats were totally inedible and I am not willing to pay $30 or more dollars for steaks to be given to my dog.

Because mince spoils quickly (and should be used within 2 days of mincing), meat retailers often use sulphur dioxide as a preservative. This way mince can be displayed for longer as it still looks fresh and bright red.

That is exactly what I have been through myself.

My son , whom is a butcher explained to me that a lot of time it's that the mince has either been frozen ( therefore it has been sitting in the melted water too long during defrosting)..Or it's just stored too long in the same place without being rotated, this tends to happen in Supermarket butchers . Colour is just aesthetics.. Go on smell . It is your prerogative if you want a refund or exchange. I do have one question though..If it was like that in the shop why purchase it if he/she wasn't sure about quality ???

That’s not right they should refund. My Aldi is very good like that.
Don't know how. When they ask you that you show the Packet the meat was wrapped in and then supply them with a copy of the till docket when you pay in cash what proofs have you got.?
And if you try and talk to the store Manager (You have to go there as you can't ring the store) you might as well bash your head against the wall as he will direct you to the customer service.
And the for the people who lives way out of town what chances of success have you got.?
