‘People were throwing up in restaurants’: Gut-wrenching virus sweeps through cruise ship

Cruise holidays are meant to be a relaxing escape, offering luxury, adventure, and unforgettable experiences at sea.

But when unexpected health risks emerge, the dream can quickly turn into a distressing ordeal.

Passengers on a cruise are battling a fast-spreading illness, sparking concerns over onboard safety.

A luxury cruise through Northern Europe turned into a nightmare as a severe norovirus outbreak swept through P&O's Iona, leaving passengers falling ill in alarming numbers.

The massive vessel carried over 5,000 guests and nearly 2,000 staff.

It became the epicentre of a highly contagious virus known for causing vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps, and severe gastrointestinal distress.

Hundreds of passengers reportedly succumbed to the illness, with reports stating that the outbreak worsened as the voyage continued.

The ship remained offshore near Belgium while staff attempted to isolate infected individuals and limit their movement both onboard and during land-based excursions.

‘People were throwing up in restaurants, on decks, outside cabins,’ a passenger shared.

‘A large number of guests and staff are experiencing the virus symptoms.’

P&O Cruises confirmed reports of passengers experiencing symptoms but declined to comment on how many crew members had been affected.

‘P&O Cruises works with global, national and regional public health authorities on approved and proven protocols across our ships in order to protect the health and wellbeing of all on board,’ a spokesperson said.

‘Gastrointestinal related illness is very common in the UK and is predominantly spread by person to person transmission in environments such as hotels, schools and restaurants.’

Norovirus, a leading cause of gastroenteritis, typically results in severe stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhoea.

Symptoms usually appeared 12 to 48 hours after exposure, with recovery taking up to three days.

Dehydration was a significant concern, especially for elderly passengers who were more vulnerable to severe symptoms.

The virus spread rapidly through contaminated food, water, surfaces, and person-to-person contact, making cruise ships a high-risk environment.

Unsanitary food handling and close quarters further increased the likelihood of transmission.

P&O Cruises was contacted for further comment.

Health experts warn that norovirus spreads rapidly in close quarters, making outbreaks like this especially concerning for travellers.

Watch the video below to learn more about norovirus and how it spreads.

In a previous story, a food scientist revealed which everyday foods could pose hidden health risks.

With outbreaks like this cruise ship illness, understanding what we consume is more important than ever.

Key Takeaways
  • A norovirus outbreak on P&O's Iona left hundreds of passengers ill, turning a Northern Europe cruise into a nightmare.
  • The ship, carrying over 5,000 guests and nearly 2,000 staff, remained offshore near Belgium as crew isolated infected individuals and restricted movements.
  • Passengers reported widespread vomiting and diarrhoea, while P&O Cruises confirmed cases but declined to disclose the number of affected staff.
  • Norovirus, a highly contagious virus spread through food, water, and contact, posed a severe risk, especially to elderly passengers vulnerable to dehydration.

Cruise holidays promise relaxation and adventure, but outbreaks like this raise serious concerns about health and safety at sea.

We gave done a lot of cruises and now hubby refuses to go on another one.

The last one we went on it was delayed due to a gastro virus on the ship and it needed a deep clean. Then only a couple of weeks after that cruise a ship arrived in Sydney full of passengers with Covid.

Since then we have spoken to someone who worked on cruise ships abd told us how every ship has a morgue abd that what passengers don't know is the high number of people who die while on a cruise ship.

Why would you cruise on these huge ships.
Viking is the best.
Ocean ships - 900 adult passé only. No Kids.
River ships - 100 passé only. No kids..
Travelled with Viking 6 times and not a single issue.

People have often asked me if I ever want to go on a cruise, my answer is always "Hell No" and this is the reason why it seems if one falls ill everyone goes out in sympathy.

I'm with you 100% Marilynne.

I would never go on an ocean cruise. I might be tempted by a river cruise but even that doesn’t really interest me. My husband would love to go but wouldn’t go alone so I guess he’s not going lol. My niece and family have been on two since lockdown and have returned home with Covid both times.

This story has been soooooooo blown out of what really happened, the people who were actually on the ship have said this. Yes there were people who got Noro Virus, but the people said that they never saw anyone vomiting in corridors or anywhere else. Every cruise I have been on is the same you have dirty people who don't use sanitisers or wash their hands after using the toilet, bypassing the sanitising stations before entering the food courts, picking up utensils and throwing back into dishes and getting sick. My take is who cares you are a pig and deserve it, the other people who touch their germ ridden area it's sad for them. I am super careful to not touch bannisters when going up stairs, or touching a lot of things in Public areas. I've done 4 World cruises each in excess of 100 days at a time and have never been sick. Does not matter the size of the ship you can't help it when there are PIGS around who do the wrong thing

I always rather morbidly found amusement with a death, at sea as we had to keep the bodies in the freezers and the meat rate fell through the deck

This item has historical significance as well. It has not been widely reported but Corona Virus appeared in Wuhan in China only after a group of Cruise Ship passengers went home to industrial Wuhan, post docking in Shanghai after a cruise holiday and in Chinese working conditions, started a factory wide epidemic which was later identified as Co-Vid.

The first case of Co-Vid in the United States was a 99 years old lady who went straight from a cruise ship to an old-age home and spread her infection to 350 people plus their visitors and their extended families over about 3 weeks. Cruise ships have long been associated with Viral Outbreaks. They are like prisons in the respect of being densely populated and intensely intimate with no prospect of escape. When one docks, it releases 3,000 prisoners on day leave and then sails off to another destination a couple of days later with the passengers who did not leave the ship. They infect very widely and a lot of illness outbreaks have been caused by Cruise ships.

I'm with you and this story proves it!
It doesn't prove it, it is blown out of all proportion, grossly exaggerated, and that comes straight from the mouths of the people who were on that cruise ship, there were a lot of people interviewed and they all said the same it was just the usual amount of people who get sick from being dirty. Everyone should know you can only believe ⅓ rd of what the Journalists say and the rest is to sell a story.

Who would want to go into a floating virus and bacteria ridden incubator while looking at a blue horizon for days on end?

BORING!
I love going on cruises. I could sit all say on the sun beds looking out on the horizon.

Great restruants and great shows each night as well as DJs and dancing on the deck.

Hubby hates it but I believe secretly he really liked it. But I can't get him to go on another one although he said he wouldn't mind doing a Europe river cruise but he does want to do the flight part. 🫣

Floating casinos where the odds are stacked excessively in favour of the "house".

Recent cruise advertisements state "No kids....no casinos". That equates to "no fun", catering for the palliative care sector of our community.

BORING!

See this is why I only do small boat cruising, 200 odd passengers and about the same again in staff. Those big ships are floating festering lab dishes.
I get this. These super sized ships are awful. I have no desire to ever go on one. Thousands of people together in a confined space..overwhelming 24/7!
I too prefer a much smaller size ship. You may pay more but can enjoy a far better, enjoyable experience.

I must admit that my time on passenger ships was very strict with regards personal hygiene, we would have a personal inspection before starting work in the saloons at mealtimes also we had to sign for the silverware if you were short at the end of the trip you had to pay for it. I remember one passenger offering me a fiver for a silver coffee set, got a bit nasty when I knocked him back his wife was a darling his son was a little shithouse, he was playing up one so I hit him over the head with my glass cloth of course became melodramatic till his mother told him while I got a fresh one that it was only a cloth she didn't know that I had a heavy silver serving spoon wrapped in it plus his father suffered as well with a mild induced gastro but that was a week later couldn't make it too obvious. Some other time I'll tell you about chatting up the passengers, which was a serious offence unless you were a bloody officer.
