The Secret Icing That Transforms Your Vanilla Slice from Ordinary to Irresistible - You Need to Try This Now!

Ah, the humble vanilla slice – a staple of Australian bakeries and a sweet treat that has stood the test of time. It's a simple delight, yet one that sparks a surprising amount of debate among dessert aficionados across the nation. The bone of contention? The icing that crowns this classic pastry.

For those of us who have grown up with the scent of freshly baked goods wafting through the air, the vanilla slice holds a special place in our hearts. It's the combination of that firm yet creamy yellow custard, flaky pastry, and the perfect topping that makes it irresistible. But when it comes to that final layer, there's a clear winner in the icing stakes – and it's not just any old frosting.

Let's set the scene: imagine biting into a vanilla slice, the pastry crumbling just so, the custard providing a rich, velvety counterpoint. Now, imagine that experience elevated by a tangy, sweet, and utterly divine passionfruit icing. Yes, dear members of the Seniors Discount Club, passionfruit icing is the secret ingredient that takes a vanilla slice from ordinary to extraordinary.

The passionfruit icing is not just a topping; it's an experience. The tartness of the passionfruit cuts through the sweetness of the custard, creating a harmony of flavors that dance on the palate. It's a combination that is both refreshing and indulgent, a true celebration of what a vanilla slice can be.

But why is it that this particular icing is so hard to come by outside of certain regions? It's a question that puzzles many, especially those who have had the pleasure of enjoying this version of the vanilla slice. In some parts of Australia, you might find vanilla slices adorned with pink or white icing, perhaps even a dusting of icing sugar or a swirl of buttercream. While these are all fine in their own right, they lack the zesty punch that passionfruit brings to the table.

The pink and white icings, often seen in bakeries, are visually appealing, sure. They might even have a touch of elegance with their chocolate feathering, reminiscent of the French mille-feuille. But when it comes to flavour, they simply don't stand up to the vibrant, fruity zing of passionfruit.

And then there's the buttercream frosting – a choice that seems to miss the mark entirely for a vanilla slice. The fluffy texture and overly sweet taste can overpower the delicate balance of the pastry and custard. What we're looking for is that slightly firm icing with a glossy sheen that sets to perfection, akin to royal icing, providing just the right amount of resistance to the bite.

It's a call to arms for all lovers of the classic vanilla slice: we must not let the passionfruit-topped variety become a relic of the past. It's time to rally behind this superior icing choice and ensure that future generations can experience the full glory of this iconic Australian dessert.

So, where do you stand on the great icing debate? Have you had the pleasure of tasting a vanilla slice with the incomparable passionfruit icing? Or perhaps you have another favourite? Share your thoughts and experiences with us. Let's keep the conversation – and the tradition of the perfect vanilla slice – alive and well.

Key Takeaways
  • The author argues that the only acceptable icing for a vanilla slice is passionfruit icing, dismissing other varieties like pink or white icing, and buttercream frosting as inferior.
  • The piece passionately discusses the combination of creamy yellow custard and pastry as a classic Australian bakery staple, though it acknowledges regional variations in the topping.
  • Describing other icing options as either too sugary, boring, or texturally off, the author emphasises passionfruit icing's ability to complement the custard with its zesty flavour profile.
  • The article ends with a call to Australian bakers to preserve the tradition of topping vanilla slices with passionfruit icing, indicating a personal difficulty in finding this version in recent times.
Remember, the next time you're at your local bakery, ask for the vanilla slice with passionfruit icing. It's a small choice that makes a world of difference. And who knows, you might just convert a few more to the cause of preserving this delectable Aussie classic in its most delicious form.

...sorry but with passionfruit icing? Maybe a "delectable" Aussi classic, but I rather have the ORIGINAL European one any time.

Whoopsy I forgot I’m 66 now 🤣
I’ll stick to plain old white icing anyway.👍

I don’t like vanilla slices but was given one once with passion fruit icing on it. The icing was the best bit. My husband & brother both love them.

Happy birthday for the one you forgot - hope you had a great day

Not everyone like passionfruit and I am one of those people, so I will be sticking to the plain icing and getting it all over my fingers - just so I can lick it off. {I do wash my hands before I start to eat the square.}

You just described a match stick cake not vanilla slice

I have always made vanilla slice using passionfruit icing.

Growing up in Sydney in the 60s when cake shops were around , the vanilla slice only had passionfriut icing 😋

I had posted an amazing vanilla slice recipe ages ago. I will find it and bump it up. You can add whatever icing you want. I will stick with passionfruit

What alot of you are describing is match sticks.
