Young Couple's Startling Discovery In Attic of 108-year-old Home

When you purchase a century-old home, you are not only acquiring a physical structure, but also a piece of history. These homes can tell us a lot about the people who lived in them and the times they lived in.

That's why when a young couple shared their 'spooky yet fascinating' discovery in the attic of the 108-year-old home they recently purchased, social media users were sent into a frenzy.

Posting their finds on Reddit, the couple joked about how their experience felt like the opening of a spooky film as they inspected each room inside their new house,

'Young couple moves from the city to a big old farmhouse on land for dirt cheap. They start renovating…' Reddit user u/_planties, the newlywed woman, wrote.

'Husband is away for work for months at a time. The wife is left home alone with the animals and to manage the farm. Will she be possessed when he gets home?'

'Oh yeah, and when we bought the house there were dozens of dolls on the third floor looking out the window when you pulled up. 😬'

She noted that the house, which was constructed in 1914, is categorised as an American Foursquare — a design that was prominent from the mid-1890s through the late 1930s.

As soon as the couple settled into the house, they set to work remodelling it and bringing it back to its previous splendour in the early 20th century.

The woman explained: 'We bought the home in probate and I was able to make contact with the family to see if there was anything they wanted (the house came with everything in it and they were hoarders).'

'All they wanted was one small tote of family photos.'

She claims that the previous owners left more than 3,000 square feet of belongings behind, including the enigmatic item they would soon find in one of the rooms.

The couple was astonished to discover a box full of artifacts from the Victorian era tucked away among the stacks of antique furniture.

There was a tonne of antique photographs in the box, all from the late 1800s and early 1900s.

But after closely examining a few of the images, user @_planties and her husband started to have unsettling suspicions.

'I totally think that some of the folks in these pictures are already dead,' the woman wrote.

'It’s a fun game we like to play sometimes when we look at them. Who can find a dead person first!'

Families in the Victorian era frequently took photographs of the already deceased in an effort to immortalise their loved ones, but in a way that made them look to be alive.

These images, known as ‘mourning tableaux’, depicted the deceased in lifelike arrangements with loved ones or priceless objects. In other cases, colour was applied to their cheeks or lips to give the impression that they were still alive.

In light of this, it would not be as far-fetched as @_planties said for some of these photographs to have been taken after the fact. Spooky!

However, one question persists: Who exactly are these people?

The woman said: 'Not sure who they are. We met the grandson of the man who built this home. I’m going to bring these photos along with the rest of them down to their house to see if they recognise anyone.'

She intends to memorialise them by hanging the images in their home until she can identify the subjects and reunite them with their relatives.

'We have two staircases in the house, maybe I’ll do a gallery wall going up one of them! … I saved probably 30 or so frames that I found in the house when we were cleaning it out. Maybe that’s what I was saving them for and didn’t know it!' they declared.

The post has captured the attention of hundreds of Reddit users, with many expressing their fascination with the discovery.

One user wrote: 'This is such an incredible find.'

'As someone who collects antique photographs, I’m a little jealous, such wonderful little pieces of history.'

Another said: 'When I see these old photos for sale, it always makes me sad. So glad you are going to celebrate these people.'

A third chimed in: 'What a great treasure to find in your home. 🙂 Thank you for sharing!'

It's fascinating to think about all the families that have come and gone from your home and to try and imagine what their lives were like. We hope the newlywed couples will be able to reconnect with the families of the deceased people in the photos.

They say it was a spooky find, but what I find spooky is they are hanging pictures of dead people they don't know on their walls

People die, it's a fact of life. I can fully understand why some people would like a memento of a deceased loved one. Remember that back in the 1890's photography wasn't as all invasive as it is today so maybe a picture of a deceased loved one might be the only one you have.:)

photographing the dead was a very common thing when photography first began, especially of children who died. They were placed amongst the living group for it. It was often the only record, and that's if they could afford to have one done.
