You won't believe which affordable brand tops the list of best dishwashing detergents!

Choosing the right dishwashing detergent can be a tedious task. With so many options on supermarket shelves, how do you know which one will actually leave your dishes sparkling clean?

Consumer review group CHOICE decided to put detergents to the test and reveal the best—and worst—performers. The results may surprise you.

CHOICE has tested 40 products to determine which brand does its job best. But this testing is unlike any other.

They imported special pre-soiled plates all the way from the Netherlands, which is one of the only places that sell these types of plates.

Etched with challenging stains like egg yolk, cheese, and bolognese sauce, these messy plates were washed with pre-selected detergents. Each brand was scored based on effectiveness.

Among all the products, an ALDI brand came out on top.

The ALDI brand Logix Platinum 18-in-1 Dishwashing Tablets shone brightly, scoring an impressive 79 per cent cleaning effectiveness. The best part? A pack of 40 tablets costs a mere $7.49. That's just 19 cents per wash!

The Logix tablets outperformed two pricy Finish products—Finish Powerball Ultimate Plus All in 1 Lemon Sparkle and Finish Powerball Ultimate Pro All in 1 Tabs Lemon Sparkle tied at 77 per cent.

The two Finish detergents cost $1.63 and $1.68 per wash.

In today's world of rising prices, knowing you don't have to break the bank for a quality detergent is refreshing.

But it wasn't all good news...

On the opposite end of the scale, Lucent Globe Ultra Concentrated Dishwashing Detergent Sheets scored a dismal 12 per cent. The manufacturer touts them as biodegradable and gentle. Unfortunately, the cleaning power just wasn't there.

‘We found plain water was actually more effective than the Lucent Globe sheets in removing red wine and egg yolk through a dishwasher cycle,’ CHOICE Director of Reviews and Testing, Matthew Steen, said

According to Mr Steen, several other 'green' detergents also underperformed due to less harsh chemicals. While better for the environment, they couldn't stand up to tough grease and grime.

Somat Excellence Duo Power Gel Active Degreasers also performed poorly at 45 per cent, with Somat Excellence Duo Power Gel Lemon and Lime scoring marginally better at 49 per cent.

Woolworths, Coles and Ecostore products rounded the bottom of the rankings, proving that supermarket brands are hit or miss.

CHOICE recommended the ALDI brand for those who want to get the best for the cheaper price.

‘If you’re looking for value for money, this is an excellent option,’ said Mr Steen about the product that won this year.

For best results, he also suggested buying detergents in smaller quantities. ‘These things do have a short shelf life…you’re going to notice that they reduce performance over time,’ Mr Steen pointed out.

‘If you’re going to buy in bulk, try to minimise it to something that’s going to last you a year,’ he advised.

CHOICE conducts this test annually for these products since it is not uncommon for manufacturers to change their formulas.

Last month, the consumer group reviewed 70 of the country’s most popular laundry detergents. Find out which brand topped the list here.

Key Takeaways
  • Consumer group CHOICE tested 40 dishwashing detergents for cleaning effectiveness.
  • ALDI’s Logix Platinum 18-in-1 Dishwashing Tablets came out on top with a 79 per cent score, outperforming many other more expensive brands.
  • The test included using pre-soiled plates imported from the Netherlands featuring challenging stains such as bolognese and egg yolk.
  • The worst-performing detergent was Lucent Globe Ultra Concentrated Dishwashing Detergent Sheets, scoring 12 per cent, described as cleaning the same as plain water.

It depends on the water to detergent ratio multiplied by the amount of elbow grease applied. My missuss says she has a plate washer thats over eighty that still works a treat, when she can get it started?.

That is what the article has already told us!!!! They came too!!!!

the correct use of the product is vital my wife used to squirt a bit of detergent on each plate as she washed up, using a , a litre every 5/6 days I switched and saved a fortune by getting a cheaper bottle to waste, a house brand saves us about $12 per month and it gets stronger the longer you keep I buy 4 at a time cost $6 lasts about 5 months. It's the same with toothpaste, their adds suggest using the length of the brush fibres as the qty to use when actually we only need 1/3 of that (ask your dentist) so you can get 3 times as much paste for the cost of one (another $12 saved)...just by using the products properly...dont believe the adds, learn to use products correctly....We waste so much money in the bathroom and kitchen...

I have an 82 year old 'plate washer' as well and I am the 78 year old cook! He doesn't complain and after every meal just gets up and washes - 2 plates under trickling hot water with just 2 drops of Aldi's Tandril Ultra liquid on a scourer sponge. We find it very effective. Less water than a dishwasher uses even if we have a full dishwasher of plates etc. It gets done without any fuss or excessive scrubbing. We don't use our dishwasher much except on family occasions and then also only use Aldi's Logix powder.

Be careful with this 82yo dishwasher. It may stop working for you one day and you can't buy replacement parts. Wondering if it isn't worth upgrading sooner? 😁😁😁😁😁😁
