You won't believe what this Gold Coast cleaner found ‘growing’ in a dishwasher!

Kate Croukamp has seen it all in her 15 years as a professional cleaner on the Gold Coast—but even she was shocked by what she discovered recently in a client's dishwasher.

A recent clean job took a wild turn when, upon emptying the filter of a dishwasher, Mrs Croukamp found what she thought were oysters and mushrooms ‘growing’ in there!

'You can usually smell it as soon as you open the dishwasher,' she says. 'You get an indication as soon as you crack it if there’s something interesting waiting in there. But you never know until you pull (the filter) out and turn it around to see what's waiting for you.'

Mrs Croukamp decided to make a video of the repulsive 'clean', and it was an immediate hit on social media.

It was one of the worst messes she’d ever come across in her professional cleaning career, and for that, it took a 'double gloving' and a combination of scrubbing brushes, scourers, and degreasers to 'get into the nooks and crannies' of the filter.

‘This filter is up there. Visually, it was a lot, add in the smell as well and, it was pretty bad,’ she said.

While it may come as a surprise to some, Mrs Croucamp shared that many aren’t aware dishwasher filters need cleaning.

As Mrs Croukamp said to a news source, 'It’s easy to judge online how someone lives, but a lot of people were never taught how to clean. If you were taught to clean, that’s a huge privilege, and many people never were.'

‘Not everyone is lazy, there could be many factors: it could be mental health, disability, being elderly, or just not knowing how to do it.’

'We’ve seen it all, at both ends of the scales. We’ve walked into places that are pristine, or you could walk into a place that’s totally neglected. It’s the difference between a job taking half a day or days.'

Depending on the severity of each bond cleaning case, Mrs Croukamp says they can charge anywhere between $500-$2,000, assuming a four-bedroom single storey house ‘standard clean’ job.

But beyond the money, she also says she takes pleasure in other aspects of cleaning.

‘The thing is, I enjoy doing cleaning transformations and helping people who are moving home and taking away as much stress as possible,’ Mrs Croukamp said.

‘So many people are embarrassed to call someone in, but that’s our job, that’s what we’re there to do.’

What do I think🙀I think I’m going to 🤮

Any filter on all appliances should be regularly cleaned.
Obviously, there was no de-scaling carried out on the dishwasher because the directions on all products recommends cleaning out the filter first. So, no cleaning, no de-scale, but she kept on washing dishes, or did she. I would have thought the hot water is something mushrooms could not tolerate. So it's possible lack of use may well have created the environment for fungus growth.
The shame of this is, if the owner had not utilised the services of a professional cleaner, she may well have become a victim as well as the dishwasher.

Oh Yuck. I was surprised people didn't know but then was amazed recently that people didn't know you had to empty your dryer filter.......to prevent household fires. Good grief.. Run a cycle with Bicarb and vinegar each week is a cheap and easy way to keep gunge at bay.....
