You won't believe what this couple found inside their breakfast egg – It's tinier than you think!

When it comes to breakfast surprises, a Coffs Harbour couple certainly didn't expect their morning routine to crack open into the record books. Rachael Ward and her fiancé Jamie were all set for a typical start to the day, with eggs on the menu. However, what Jamie found inside one of the eggs was anything but ordinary – it was another egg!

This peculiar find is reminiscent of a Russian nesting doll, where smaller versions are hidden within larger ones. But instead of a hand-painted wooden figure, this was a fully-formed, albeit minuscule, egg. The second egg was so small, perfectly shaped, and weighed just 2 grams, making it a marvel of nature.

'Jamie was really shocked when he cracked it, he was like 'what is this?',' Ward recounted to 9News.com.au. 'I had a look and thought [it was] another yolk and then I touched it and it was hard.' The tiny egg measured just over 10mm, placing it among the world's smallest chicken eggs.

This rare occurrence is known as a counter-peristalsis contraction. It happens when a hen's ovary releases a second oocyte – or egg cell – before the first egg has fully formed and been laid. It's a fascinating glimpse into the complexities of nature and the reproductive process of chickens.

Understandably, Jamie was 'a bit scared' and lost his appetite for the larger egg. The couple decided to keep the tiny egg, wrapping it in tissue and storing it in their fridge as a keepsake of this unusual event.

The eggs were originally purchased from local hobby farmer Gerald Gauci. When the couple showed him the tiny egg, he measured it and confirmed its size and weight. This isn't the first time a minuscule egg has made headlines. In 2016, a British woman discovered a 1.55cm egg laid by her hen, which broke the Guinness World Record for the world's smallest chicken egg.

While this Coffs Harbour couple's egg may not have broken any records, it certainly provided an unexpected twist to their breakfast routine. It's a reminder that even in the most mundane moments, life can serve up some extraordinary surprises.
