You won't believe the one question these people googled after their election results!

As the United States tallied up the votes during their latest election cycle, a surprising trend emerged that caught the attention of many Australians. While political tensions ran high and the world watched with bated breath, some Americans were considering a significant change – not just in leadership but in scenery. As the possibility of a Trump victory loomed, Google searches for 'How to move to Australia' began to surge, revealing a profound sense of political fatigue and a yearning for a fresh start down under.

This phenomenon isn't entirely new; back in 2016, when Trump first secured the presidency, Canada's immigration website famously crashed under the weight of inquiries from Americans seeking an escape. However, this time around, it seems Australia has captured the imagination of those looking for an alternative, with a notable number of searches coming from states where Harris had won, such as Oregon, Washington, and Colorado.

The Land Down Under has long been a beacon for those seeking adventure, a change of pace, or simply a break from their routine – and it appears that the increasingly divisive nature of US politics is only adding to its allure. Young Americans, in particular, are becoming a 'growing cohort' among those venturing to Australian shores.

According to the Department of Home Affairs, the United States ranks 12th in the issuance of working holiday visas to Australia. Matthew Heyes, the founder of Backpacker Job Board, Australia's premier job site for working holidaymakers, believes that Australia is an ideal destination for Americans seeking a respite from the political whirlwind. 'Though the number of American backpackers is small, it's a growing cohort,' he commented. The recent spike in Irish backpackers, possibly driven by economic factors in Europe, suggests a similar trend could emerge among young Americans.

Australia's working holiday scheme allows Americans aged between 18 and 30 to stay for up to three years, provided they meet certain working requirements. While this doesn't match the four-year term of a US presidency, it offers a substantial period for those looking to immerse themselves in a different culture and way of life. Heyes notes that Australia has much to offer, from the vibrant, progressive culture of Melbourne to the unique experiences of working on a cattle station in Western Australia or Queensland.

The federal government's recent decision to scrap the requirement for UK residents on regional work visas to apply for additional 12-month stays has sparked discussions about extending this policy to other countries, which could further boost the number of Americans considering the move.

While a Google search might be just the first step in a long journey, it's clear that the idea of relocating to Australia is more than just a fleeting thought for some. The promise of sandy beaches, a laid-back lifestyle, and a welcoming environment for young, progressive individuals could be just the ticket for those looking to escape political disappointment and start anew.

Key Takeaways

  • Google searches for 'How to move to Australia' surged as Donald Trump began to claim key states in his bid for the White House.
  • The search trend reflects the extent of the disappointment felt by some of Kamala Harris's supporters following the US election results.
  • Young Americans represent a growing cohort of individuals obtaining working holiday visas for Australia.
  • Americans aged between 18 and 30 may be eligible for up to three years on the working holiday scheme, with the possibility of further incentives if the Australian government extends the same regional work visa benefits to Americans as it did for UK residents.
So, dear readers, what do you think about this trend? Have you noticed an increase in American accents around your local area? Or perhaps you've considered a similar move in the opposite direction? Share your thoughts and stories with us. We would love to hear about your experiences with cross-cultural exchanges and the impact of global politics on personal decisions in the comments below!

If his Presidency was so bad< why did Biden reverse everything that trump fought for from the day dirt bag got into power and nobody is going to convinve me that Willie Browns knee trembler was ver effective.
Not only do Biden, a Democrat and Trump, a Republican, have conflicting views, but if you can recall, it was rampant in the latter years of his Presidency, during his mental decline, when Obama took advantage of the situation, running the country with him. (Or, should I say FOR him!)

The biggest red flag was: Obama was the first and only US President who stopped funding Israel in the history of their Independence in 1948, and the only one to fund the "Moslem Brotherhood" (amongst other terrorist organisations) instead.
Biden just like every other President before him, was funding Israel, an ally, when all of a sudden, he not only stopped supporting Israel, but also increased sending money to Hamas ... and has not relented since!

A coincidence? I think NOT!

I wasn't aware you knew so much about "make America great again". No, seriously, my USA friend used to live in a blue state, but now lives in a red state. What I'm told is they haven't been advised about anything yet. However, they are hoping Obamacare will still exist.
I would also like to reply to :

I have been an avid supporter of Trump since BEFORE his FIRST election.
It's not a matter of knowing things, it's a matter of knowing the TRUE things.
Every story is not simply 3 sides, yours, theirs and the truth -
it is a honeycomb with hundreds of sides... and the more you investigate, the sweeter it gets... and believe me, the TRUTH is SWEET!

OMG... watching too much BBC does that to you...! calling Trump the enemy. Who's been sending money to terrorists? OBAMA and BIDEN!!!! Trump stopped it the first time in office after Obama and PG he'll do it again...!

You say Trump befriends our enemies???? Really, you're calling Israel our enemy? For the first time in the History of Israel since 1948..., a president went against Israel by funding Muslim errorist organisations..... OBAMA.... Then Biden followed! Biden stopped funding Israel in the past 6 months... but has given BILLIONS to the terrorists in Gaza. Do you actually know what an enemy is?!?!?!

Who strengthened the economy, created more jobs and radically improved welfare during their Presidency? TRUMP - that's who!
Not the dumb terrorist supporters who should be hung for TREASON, or the moronic, lying, hypocritical Kamala... WAKE UP!!!!!!...

Albanese himself is a terrorist supporter, he has HEADED Palestinian protests in the past! is giving money to Hamas and taking in "Refugees", that even Muslim countries won't... WHY? Because the majority are TERRORISTS themselves - the Muslim states know who is who in their culture...!!!

Suddenly, traveling around a country as a tourist makes you politically knowledgeable...!!!! That says it all!!!
Maybe you'll wake up when another 9/11 comes to Australia!
Hi mOiOz,

Unfortunately I'm not quite sure what you are referring to me about.
1. I don't & never have watched the BBC. Where in the name of hell did you attain that idiodic thought?
2. I didn't call Trump the enemy at all.
3. I didn't call Israel our enemy.
4. I certainly know what an enemy is.
5. Maybe you couldn't get the "Gist" that I am a TRUMP supporter.
6. Re your paragraph 3. I totally agree with you about Trump & your comments about the Treasonist Harris. So why are you highlighting the fact to me TO WAKE UP? WHAT A LOAD OF COMPLETE SHIT.
4. Re your paragraph 4. I totally agree with your comments about Albo & what & how I describe his co-hort "DILL BILLS".
5. Re your last paragraph. I didn't say I travelled around the country. We did see and visit a few states from south Arizona in Toombstone, to visit the McClaurey's & Clanton family members residing in Boot Hill. up through the middle to South Dakota & to visit Wild Bill & Calamity "J". I have a little bit of family history there. Also to Cody City, in Wyoming to visit Buffalo Bill & where we had a roast ham lunch in the hotel he built & named the "IRMA" after his young daughter. His rifle & pair of 6 guns are on display behind the bar. Also visited his convention centre. I also have a little bit of family history there as well in Wyoming. All to do with my grandfather when he was a young adventurous bloke through out there in the early 1880's. We also went up into Montana, at Billings to visit George Armstrong Custer, his brother & nephew at Custers Hill & the "Battle".
Oh., I forgot to mention Monument Valley , in Arizona as well where the Duke & John Ford made many a movie situated in the Navaho Reservation. Plus also on Route 66 and the Oregon Trail as well.
6. I didn't say anything about being, & alluding to being "Political Knowledgeable" at all. That's just your STUPIDITY coming to the fore. What a TOTAL BAD ASS COMMENT by you.
7. When we conversed with numerous people & told them where we were from, they shrugged their shoulders & couldn't relate to Australia to at all.
8. Your comment about me waking up about 9/11 when it comes to Australia. WHAT A TOTAL LOAD OF COMPLETE & ABSOLUTE BULL SHIT & PISS YOU'RE SQUARKING ABOUT. Lord only knows how you managed that ABSOLUTE RATBAG CONNENTATION about me.

If only you knew & what I did for a job & had to endure would surprise you to no end. A MASS OF HISTORY therein.

I'm afraid now, that I have lost, if not all, a CONSIDERABLE MASS of CREDENCE in your SELF BEING AND YOUR SELF INDULGENCE, FULL STOP.

DON'T EVER PREACH TO ME YOUNG LADY.

I just hope my reply sat you on your bum. I may know just a tad about a few things. I've been around for a couple of years.

I thought comments on this forum was to be friendly & informative, but, in your case, now, NOT AT ALL.
All you have achieved is BELITTLING yourself with COMPLETE & UTTER RATBAGGERY. That my "Dear", is being KIND.

Before I finish, you really didn't have to HIGHLIGHT your comments to me as you have done in this instance. It certainly has HIGHLIGHTED your TRUE character to no end.

NOVEZAR.

I couldn't disagree more with your comment. Totally "UNEDUCATED" to say the least.

Can't you see how Albo & Chalmers are treading extremely lightly. I reckon that "Pixie" realises his party time is just about to expire very soon. Just hope he's started to pack his bags for his journey back home.

Can't you see how all of the "Enemies" are making friendly overtures to "DJT".

There again, "DOOMSAYERS" just can't see past their noses which is extremely unfortunate.

RULE "DJT" & your executives of your NEW cabinet to be. You will all be a FORCE to be reckoned with for SANITY & COMMON SENSE to rule SUPREME.

Also of note, is, that, millions of Americans don't know much at all outside their own country. My wife & self know 1st hand of this actual fact which we experienced when travelling from the bottom to the top of the U.S.A.

NOVEZAR.
I definitely misinterpreted most of your comments and read the 'uneducated' as a comment towards me and the 'PIXIE 'referring to Trump - The 'enemies friendly overtures' as sarcasm and 'Rule DJT 'was interpreted as a Rule-monger.
There is always a first time for everything - my apologies, I have deleted the response!

BTW, this was NOT a connotation (spelled like this) of YOU, but a general opinion on the ignorance of the average Trump hater. I did not attack your character as you did me - a dead giveaway of your real character.

You calling me "SELF-BEING AND SELF-INDULGENT", just after a full page of rampant scribble on American History boasting with, "If only you knew & what I did for a job"! Hypocrisy at its best!
Personally, I don't give a damn if you're the bloody king of England, or should I say, ...which is what you think you are!

I never preach, I tell the truth without belittling people to make myself feel bigger or act like an OLD CODGER, talking down to a "YOUNG LADY"!

PS: I am fully aware of how ignorant Americans are regarding other countries and cultures... I LIVED there for just under a year and don't profess knowing everything because of it!

I've got no idea. I don't live there. I only know what my friend fills me in with. I won't let anyone know in future what happens when I find out. Everybody here seems to know.
I’d love to know Penny4. I’m rather concerned for the sane people who live in the USA. Maybe everyone here loves guns everywhere, the state women’s reproductive health will be in let alone those who are unfortunate enough to endure a miscarriage if they live in a red state & so on. We have an American in our extended family & she is horrified by it all. I think her dad lives in Florida.

Yes, it's their 'Right to Bear Arms' as they say. Time will tell what happens with Trump.

You are probably like my friend who became a fan after watching his tv show. Let's all hope he does the right thing for Americans. Our USA Ambassador Caroline Kennedy is leaving soon to return to her family. She's been an asset with Anthony Pratt's business Visy - expanding his business in USA. Wonder who Trump will select to replace her. It's anyone's guess.

Actually, it was long before that... (y)

Your HIPOCRISY AT ITS BEST comment to me is TOTAL CRAP. I could open your eyes up BIG TIME.

I would have thought Europe generally would be the ones to be the most concerned at this time. In particular Trump/Putin negotiations re Ukraine situation. What will be ‘Mr Fixit Trump’ solution, or perhaps deal is more the correct word? Don’t believe ‘You’re Fired’ will work. Wonder what China is thinking?
