With life’s ups and downs, we've all had those moments where a small gesture or gift has made our day a bit brighter.
However, not all presents hit the mark, and a poorly considered gift can lead to amusement, bemusement or even worse…utter disappointment!
Some women have recently shared (and laughed about) the worst gifts they have ever been given on Mumsnet, a British parenting online platform.
One woman recounted that her husband, in what must have been an attempt at practicality, once gifted her a toilet brush for their 20th wedding anniversary.
She shared that her husband made the bizarre decision to gift her a toilet brush considering that they had apparently been on the lookout for one for quite some time.
In a twist of fate, the same woman once received a massive book filled with 1001 recipe ideas–but the timing was all wrong!
‘Many years ago, I was in a hospital (for gallstones), and my "get well" gift was a massive book of 1001 recipe ideas, I tried not to take offence, but once again....really?’ She shared.
Her story sparked a flurry of responses on the page, with numerous ladies sharing their own tales of gift disasters.
One woman recalled receiving some anti-ageing cream. While another was gifted a book titled How To Be Happy, and a third was given a frying pan!
The 'worst gift' experiences were vast and varied, and it wasn't just the older generation sharing them. Younger women chimed in too.
One lady remembered that in her teenage years, her forgetful father dashed to a petrol station last-minute and presented her with a mini football and a copy of Q Magazine (a now-defunct UK rock magazine).
‘I didn't mind, but I pointed out that they also sell booze and chocolate in petrol stations,’ she quipped.
Another added: 'When I was pregnant with my first baby, a work colleague gave me three pull-ups [nappies]. They were in a pretty gift bag, just loose. She had a toddler at the time, so I guess they were spare!'
No one did any counting, but perhaps it’s worth sharing one woman’s experience of having been given odd gifts more than once.
She was once gifted a cookbook titled ‘Meat Feasts’–despite being a vegetarian for over a decade.
Next, she was also given tickets to an action-packed theme park while dealing with chronic pain from a car crash.
And last but not least, she was given a dressing gown in a colour she was known for despising. She said she must have looked surprised as she unwrapped it, as the giver said: ‘I know you don’t like blue, but they didn’t have any other dressing gowns in your size.’
Others meanwhile pointed out that their husbands were the culprits of their stories.
One disappointed wife shared: 'Frying pan from my husband. To make matters worse it was in a big exciting box and I left it till last.'
'My husband bought me a toilet seat for my birthday,' another wife added, as a third shared 'I got a mahogany-coloured toilet seat as an anniversary present from my now ex-husband, that was a bit disappointing.'
And a last one added, 'About to date myself here, but who cares. It was a Jane Fonda exercise video from my husband. My weight has been a sensitive issue for much of my adult life.'
'I didn't say anything, but I just stored it and never used it. It was a misguided attempt to support and help me. Nothing more. To be fair, in 30 years of marriage, it is the only bad gift he has ever bought me.'
