You won't believe how little is inside these popular Aussie chips!

In a world where the cost of living is constantly on the rise, Aussies take their snacks seriously. There's nothing quite like settling down with a bag of chips while watching the footy or enjoy as a cheeky treat after a long day. But what happens when your anticipated snack time turns into a moment of disbelief?

This was the case for a Queensland shopper who was left more than a little bemused after opening a packet of Smith's chips. The expectation of a satisfying crunch was met with a near-empty bag, containing a mere five chips. Yes, you read that right, just five chips!

Katie Claire, the shopper in question, took to TikTok with her father to share their astonishment. In a video that has since gone viral, they weighed a supposedly 45 g bag of Smith's Original Chips, only to find the contents tipping the scales at a paltry 14 grams. The $2 snack-sized bag seemed to be playing a cruel joke on their snack cravings.

'Dad just picked up this bag of Smith's chips from IGA in Queensland,' Katie narrates in the video. 'How much is in there? We'll have a look on the scale.' The laughter that followed was tinged with disbelief as they tipped out the bag's contents onto a plate, revealing the five lonely chips and a smattering of crumbs.

Her dad's sense of humour about the situation was evident as he quipped, 'Looking forward to eating my chippies. I'm going to have to savour them for ages. So expensive. They're about $1 per chip.' He then humorously compared the cost per gram to that of prawns and oysters, highlighting the absurdity of the situation.

The term 'shrinkflation' quickly came up in the comments, with viewers accusing Smith's of reducing the amount of product in packaging while keeping the price the same. This phenomenon isn't new, but it's certainly frustrating for consumers who feel they're not getting their money's worth.

'It's getting worse. Everything has shrunk. Have you seen the ice creams and paddle pops? They're all half the size,' one person lamented in the comments. Others shared their shock and outrage, with one user admitting, 'MY JAW DROPPED! SMITH'S, the audacity.'

While some TikTokers expressed their anger, others suggested that the incident was likely a manufacturing error. 'It's a quality assessment issue,' one woman theorised. 'A lot of bags get through like this. Stay away from the multipacks.' Another commenter related, saying, 'It happens in mass production. We had empty beer cans in the bottle-o all the time.'

A spokesperson for Smith's responded to the incident. 'This is most likely a manufacturing error – the bag has been sealed early.' They encouraged the consumer to reach out to them so that Smith's could make it up to them.

Despite the explanation, the video has clearly struck a nerve with shoppers, many of whom are increasingly frustrated by rising costs and shrinking portion sizes. It's a reminder to all of us to be vigilant about what we're purchasing and to speak up when something doesn't seem right.

Thanks v.p. The time has flown bye so fast I’ve gotten so much done while waiting for a new phone and plus I’ve been making plans for my future so I’m excited.
Oh! And also Centrelink accepted my new certificate until the 1st of July so I can go straight onto the pension without having to apply for it. Yippee 🥳 the best thing they did was bring in the new changes to our doc certificates and it’s about bloody time. No more having to deal with the a.h. Job agencies.thank goodness cos I told the At Work agency to go get fked.😂

I had too they have no respect for people all they see when they look at you is $$$$ signs so I thought you know what I’ve got nothing to lose have I. I even reported them to Centrelink for elder abuse I was so angry, and you know what the lovely guy at Centrelink congratulated me for doing so. He said the amount of complaints they get about these agencies is unbelievably high but their hands are tied by gov bullshit. So I’m glad I did it.🥳

Many years ago some unauthorised, unwelcome people visited my elderly mother and signed her up for some internet use. She had no idea what is was, didn’t have a computer and, gullible as she was, she agreed and they signed her up for the service anyhow. When I heard about it I called them and very pointedly asked them if they wanted to be on TV the next day. Quick smart it was all cancelled. Too many taking advantage of the elderly these days.

That is totally disgraceful Catherine. Reminds me of a beautiful elderly friend who was called from fake Microsoft telling her she needed a fix for windows. The poor darling told them she already had a house full of windows & certainly didn’t need anymore. She had no idea until we explained that they trying to scam her over a computer programme. They didn’t ever call her back.
Thank goodness that you were able to help your mum out.
