You won’t believe this Aussie mum’s $12 Birkenstock hack!

You may not know this, but Birkenstock is a German shoe company that's been around since 1774. They're most commonly known for their sandals, which feature a contoured cork-and-latex footbed that conforms to the shape of your feet over time.
Birkenstocks are beloved by celebrities and everyday Aussies alike for their comfort and style, but they definitely come with a hefty price tag – usually hundreds of dollars a pair!
For many of us, that's just too much to spend on a single pair of shoes (no matter how comfortable they may be).
One Aussie mum was thinking the exact same thing when her daughter, aged 5, told her one day she wanted a pair of Birkenstocks like her older sister.

'Little Miss Five really wanted Birkenstocks that looked like her big sister but I wasn't prepared to spend the money on the real deal,' the mum said as she shared her situation on Facebook.
On Birkenstock’s website, the cheapest kids’ sandals were priced at around $50.
Like any parent on a budget would do, the mum quickly searched for an alternative — and she found her solution at Kmart!
'For just $12 at Kmart we found a pair of sandals with a similar style to what she wanted,’ the mum said.
After purchasing the pair, this crafty Aussie mum snipped off the straps found at the back of the $12 Kmart sandals with scissors… and the result was astonishing!
The tweaked footwear might as well have been bought at a Birkenstock store as it looks great and it was a fraction of the price!
‘TA-DA, she now has big girl "Birks" like her big sister.' the proud mum added.
'I used sharp fabric scissors for a clean cut through the thick material used.’
Of course, many impressed mums found themselves amazed at the brilliant feet — uh, feat, and tried it out for themselves.

One wrote: 'I also did this for my seven-year-old last week. She loves them!'
Others meanwhile praised the Aussie mum for her clever approach to the whole situation. We agree, good on this mum!
If you’re also raring to get a feel of these Birkenstocks for less, you may want to take a look at Kmart’s $9 dollar options, which one commenter said lasted ‘almost as long’ as the real thing.
Excuse us while we check that out real quick. Kidding! Maybe…
Don’t we love well-meaning parents and grandparents who will move heaven and earth to put smiles on their kids’ and grandkids’ faces?
If you have time, check out this mum’s valiant effort at making a Frozen-themed cake for her daughter, and this mum’s mess-free hack for sprinkle-filled fairy bread!
So, what is your reaction to this crafty mum’s cost-effective way to give her daughter her own ‘Birkenstocks’?
