Woolworths' new self-checkout rule triggers customer uproar—here's why!

Woolworths has stirred customers' rage in a recent incident, as shared by some shoppers, due to a controversial new measure.

An incident involving a particular produce has arisen due to the supermarket giant's most recent strategy to deter shoplifting at the self-service checkout.

It’s a scenario seemingly fit for the digital age: a customer slips a bag of mushrooms across a self-checkout scanner, only to be halted by an alert demanding a staff member’s inspection.

At Woolworths, it’s standard to offer brown paper bags for mushrooms to preserve their freshness. But now, these bags are the centre of customer grievances.

As reported by one shopper online, the self-checkout system paused their transaction and prompted a Woolworths staff member to verify the bag's contents.

The measure seeks to clamp down on customers, possibly hiding pricier goods or more expensive mushroom types, thereby circumventing the rightful price tag.

‘Woolworths is looking inside the mushroom bags at the self-checkout,’ the shopper shared, announcing it as a ‘public service announcement’.

‘Not sure if it’s random, or if it’s triggered by a certain weight. However, if you purchase loose mushrooms, the self-checkout will pause and prompt the attendant to come over and look inside the mushroom bag.’

Another shopper shared a similar experience.

‘Happened to me,’ a shopper recalled. ‘I was f****** p*****, because the day before, I had bought their pre-packed mushrooms and after opening the fine-looking packaging, the mushrooms were slimy and beyond use. Totally ripped off.’

‘But the next day, when I chose them myself, they’re acting like I was the one trying to rip them off, “Sorry we need to look in the bag.”’

‘I’m sorry too, but yesterday, if I’d have opened that package of mushrooms to make sure you weren’t ripping me off, you’d have had a total fit.’

Other disgruntled voices weighed in, ranging from exasperation over the invasion of privacy to sarcasm regarding the financial impact of mushroom price variance.

‘I just—oh, this enrages me. I HATE self-checkouts,’ one customer said.

Another shopper replied, ‘It’s so people don’t try and put through the fancy portobello mushrooms at the plain old white mushroom price. Because that extra $2/kg is going to send them bankrupt.’

‘Don’t you just love being made to feel like a thief?’ one more shopper shared.

‘With the amount of times the attendant gets called over these days there’s no time benefit of self-checkout.’

‘I’m seriously thinking about just using regular checkouts ‘cos they seem faster.’

I tend to avoid the self serve checkouts, I like to talk to people. They also check the brown paper bag for mushroom type. My bugbear is having someone wanting to see the docket after I have paid on the way out of the store. Bunnings & Kmart are the most painful for this BS.
Well, this is because some people just walk out, goods and all. Really, what do you expect them to do. It takes about 20 seconds of your precious time, why make a drama of it.
So much easier to just show them the docket and go on your way than upsetting your day getting in a tizz about it.Surely you've got better things to do with your time.
There's plenty of big important things going on in the world to get upset about if you are that way inclined.

Never use self check out not even for one item. They don’t pay me, I’m lining their pockets. If I was to use a self check out I think I would get six or seven brown bags with just a few mushrooms in each bag and and have fun waiting for the check out person to come an check

A chill pill? What pisses me off is some nobody trying to exert authority over me when they have NO authority to do so.

Don't start on "store policy". I think you will have difficulty finding a law or regulation governed by an Act that states such "policies".
I'm afraid they're doing their job. Get over it. Letting people steal just costs us more in the long run.

Bought a couple of birds-eye chillies in my shop at Woolies the other day. Tried to scan them at the self-serve. They weren't recognised by the camera, so I had to go through the menus, type "chil.." Selected the item on screen and had them on the scale but the machine wouldn't accept them because they didn't weigh enough so I called over the assistant who tried to get them weighed but, no luck. After a couple more shots at it, he eventually let me have them for nothing, overriding the machine.
This was a several minutes of my valuable time lost forever.

A bit off topic but in relation to the thick plastic wrapping Woolworths have started using to wrap organic veg like tomatoes and figs, zucchini and cucumbers - I have had rotten product so many times that I now open everything in the car before I leave the shopping centre and return the mouldy produce to the the service desk where they politely apologise and ask me to get another pack - I just as politely ask them to get the

manager of the fruit and veg section to come over and I politely ask him to pack me a new bag of whatever it is I’ve returned and wait for him to do this.
It’s exasperating for them and me But at least I’m getting the point across that it’s not my job to ensure fresh produce and they get to know what it feels like to be inconvenienced by their own shoddy standards.

I have multiple pain issues that can be exacerbated by bending up and down. Self check outs make it worse and besides, you can't fit a trolley full of groceries on the other side after scanning, yet your trolley is not empty enough to replace them in. Difficulty all around for me and I expect many elderly people.
Don't use them. Simple
