Woolworths employee reveals the SECRET SCHEDULE when fresh produce and meat are reduced in stores

We all love a markdown, especially when it's on items we need or really want.

Whether it's a new outfit that finally goes on sale after you've been eyeing it for weeks, or fresh food in your grocery shop, being able to snag something at a lower price is always satisfying.

Speaking of which, have you ever wondered when exactly supermarkets reduce their fresh produce and meat for shoppers to bag affordable deals?

Well, we’ve mentioned in previous articles that the process for slashing the price of produce and meat varies from store to store. Though the ideal shopping schedule for bargain hunters is believed to be in the evenings.

The precise schedule that many of these discounted things become available, however, is still unknown to us...That is, until now — thanks to a Woolworths employee, we now know the exact time to shop to get a wide selection of marked-down goodies!

Posting on Reddit, a current Woolies employee revealed that markdowns for fresh meats and fresh produce usually start at around 2 pm.

They claimed that the schedule for markdowns on chilled foods and meats that are set to expire in a day or two starts in the evening and can decrease up to 80 per cent OFF the original price.

The staff member also added that the best time to nab good deals is anytime after 6 pm or 7 pm.

'Current Woolies worker here, our store applies its first markdowns for chilled products and meat from 2 pm to 4 pm,' they shared.

'Usually, those items are about to go off for one or two days. Percentage off is generated by stock on hand and how many days out.'

'Usually, between 6 pm and 8 pm for same day sale, a further markdown can be applied, at our discretion up to 80 per cent.'

'Produce is usually the same method, but earlier in the day from around 9 to 10 am. Hope this helps.'

Another Woolies team employee vouched for the comment, adding more details about similar processes at their store.

The worker explained: 'For the Woolworths store where I work, there are usually a few stages of markdowns.'

'On meat and dairy stuff, it usually happens twice a night depending on how close the expiration is. The system won’t let you mark something down without it being in the system.'

'It tells you how much to mark it down by and prints the labels. More often than not, if you want cheaper stuff, go in around 7 pm and there will be some.'

A Woolworths representative confirmed that stores apply discounts on some products, emphasising that the company goes the extra mile to minimise food waste in stores.

'Like all food retailers, we work hard to minimise waste by ordering the right level of stock to meet customer demand,' the spokesperson remarked.

'From time to time, we do find ourselves with excess stock, which is why we have markdown processes and food diversion partnerships in every store to avoid sending food to landfill.'

'Surplus food is donated to our food rescue partners OzHarvest, Foodbank and FareShare, along with local farmers and more, to be put to good use.'

'In the past year, equivalent to millions of meals have been donated to our food rescue partners and many tonnes of surplus food was donated to hunger relief partners, local farmers, zoos, wildlife carers and commercial composters.'

Key Takeaways

Better off to discount prices up front if surplus is a problem. Then we can all share the benefits. Great they donate to those organisations who are looking after those disadvantaged.

I find that the best way to save money on Woolworths meat is to drive three extra blocks to the Supa IGA; awaaaay better quality, too.
