Woolworths dramatically reduces the cost of a popular item after customer outrage

The cost of living is on the rise, and many are struggling to afford the basic necessities.

So, when Woolworths announced that they had ‘reluctantly’ increased the price of a staple grocery item a few months ago, few were happy about it.

In May, the Australian supermarket raised the price of their iconic roast chooks to $12 for the first time since February 2022.

Understandably, customers complained about how expensive the chickens were, and Woolworths had no choice but to respond.

'At Woolworths, we understand that every dollar counts and work hard to provide value for customers every time they shop with us while balancing the needs of our suppliers,' a spokesperson from the supermarket said.

'For the first time since February 2022, we reluctantly increased the price of our roast chickens by $1 due to an increase in input costs.

'We still believe our delicious hot roast chooks provide excellent value whether it’s for a dinner for the family or to share at a picnic with friends.'

As of this week, shoppers can breathe a sigh of relief, as Woolworths has announced that they’re temporarily reducing the price of their Country Style Roast Chickens to just $10.90–a $1.10 saving–until August 29th.

Matt Harbich, Woolworths’ 'Chief Chook Officer', admitted that this unexpected reduction was aimed directly at helping those struggling with their basic needs amidst the stressful cost of living crisis.

‘We’re excited to drop the price of our roast chickens to $10.90 for a limited time to give our customers some extra value this week,’ Harbich said.

‘We’ve been selling hot roast chickens in our stores since 1960, and they’ve been a firm customer favourite ever since.’

‘Whether it’s for a Sunday roast or a picnic, hot roast chooks continue to grow in popularity with more than 20 million sold in our stores every year.’

Back in 2015, both Woolworths and Coles removed $3 from the price of their roast chickens, bringing it down to just $8. The price then stayed at its lowest point for three years before both supermarkets raised it by $1 in 2018.

Although this discount is the first time the chickens have had prices slashed in years, Coles is still at the same price point–selling their RSPCA Approved Whole Chicken Roast at $12.

Woolworths did not only lower the price of their popular Country Style Roast Chickens, but they also reportedly lowered the price of more than 450 products as part of their seasonal Prices Dropped for Spring campaign.

Natalie Davis, Woolworths Supermarkets’ Managing Director said the store understands the plight of many Aussies.

'Our research shows that customers are using more [ways] to save on their grocery shops…'

'With this in mind, we looked at how we could create healthier meal ideas…' she said.

Sandi1952.....alright to say go to Costco......

but not everyone has a Store close by, or wants to pay a $65 joining fee to buy a $6 roast chicken !!

As Costco is an American company, don't the profits go back to America??
I realise not every one can go to Costco but if it works it works. It does for me and if I could buy one for you I would. Why would all the profits go back to America? Do all the profits for McDonalds and KFC go back to America how do all their workers get paid? Use your iniative in the meantime I hope you get to a Costco if you have a generous friend who could take you along as a guest on their card and enjoy one of their roast chickens. Have a nice day!

Sandie1952.....
Please use YOUR initiative!!
Gross profits are money received from Product Sales.

Net Profits are what's left after operating costs and wages are deducted.

In Costco's case, their net profits go back to their parent company in the USA

All McDonald stores in Australia are franchised to Australian operators, who, after operating costs and wages, must pay a royalty back to McDonald America.

KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, are all operated by "Yum! Foods" in Australia, who also pay a royalty back to America, after operating costs and wages are deducted.
