Woolworths addresses shocking amount of cameras in one of its newest stores

The sight of security cameras in retail stores is nothing new, but for some shoppers at Woolworths, the number of cameras has become a point of contention and curiosity.

A recent photo shared by a customer on social media, showing a plethora of cameras in one of Woolworths' newest stores, has sparked a debate about privacy, surveillance, and the purpose behind these watchful eyes.

'Did Woolies spend all their profits on security cameras? I counted at least 10 cameras just in this area?' the customer asked.

The post sparked a flurry of responses, with some shoppers expressing discomfort at being 'treated like a criminal', while others speculated that the cameras were installed to monitor customer behaviour.

'These track how long you stop in front of a certain product, how long you look at it. Which shelf you focus on, how you move between aisles, etc,' one user suggested.

'The fact they are also security cameras is just a bonus.'

In response to the online chatter, Woolworths has clarified the purpose of these cameras.

A spokesperson confirmed that the cameras are indeed closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, installed for security purposes.

They explained that the cameras might appear more prominent due to the high ceilings in the new store.

'People are going to see them in every store,' the spokesperson added.

Retail Marketing Expert Professor Gary Mortimer supported Woolworths' statement and explained that the cameras aim to detect theft and ensure the safety of team members and customers.

'Theft is costing retailers over $9 billion each year, so it is unsurprising to see more and more retailers implementing technology to reduce crime,' he said.

'With newer supermarkets, the false ceilings have been removed, exposing cabling, plumbing and air conditioning equipment. Accordingly, there is a need to suspend such CCTV units on poles.'

He added that while CCTVs are often seen in the health and beauty aisles, 'shoppers may begin noticing these units in other areas throughout stores'.

'Sadly, retail theft can happen anywhere within a store—at the self-service area, or in quiet locations around the perimeters of a store.'

Last month, Woolworths debunked a 'joke' about new 'spy cameras' in a store's fruit section, explaining that the flashing lights were not cameras but lights to help personal shoppers quickly identify the next item on their list.

In 2023, Woolworths began trialling new camera technology to monitor stock levels, adding more than 500 cameras in one NSW store to take pictures every hour.
Key Takeaways
  • A Woolworths shopper noticed an unusually high number of CCTV cameras at one of the stores, which sparked discussions on surveillance.
  • A Woolworths spokesperson clarified that the cameras are standard CCTV used for security purposes and may appear more prominent in stores with high ceilings.
  • Retail marketing expert Professor Gary Mortimer supported the use of CCTV for theft prevention, citing the annual cost of retail theft in Australia.
  • Woolworths previously clarified that flashing lights in a store's fruit section were not cameras but indicators to help personal shoppers.

I have indeed written to and also had a chat with my local MP, Federal and State, about certain issues and they proved to be very charming and just somehow seemed to divert the conversation from the simple main point I was asking them to consider. Waste of time as far as I am concerned; ALP or LNP. However, I suppose that such ease of polite conversation can't happen in PR China; it could cost one some "social credit" points.
For sure..... the following backs that up....

I have stopped shoping at wokeworths after their australia day snub their resigning ceo told the story how they treat their customers its coles shopping for me from now on unfortunately we do not have a aldi store in our town.
Good stuff... keep it up and when Aldi comes to town give Coles the same treatment. They are just as bad...

Last I heard China is still a communist country, so they have to put up with it. No doubt, the reason we have so many Chinese and Hong Kong people living here. If Australia turns communist, we'll be in a huge mess!

It's coming.... slowly but surely... it's like boiling frog in water.

The innocent like yourself will be okay, however the unscrupulous amoungst us will get what is coming.
Where I live there are permanent safety cameras around suburbs that are monitored 24/7 to notify police if there's a public safety issue. Often, it doesn't make any difference, and I'm sure the same is happening Australia wide.

Australia doesn't need to become communist. With the internet for our convenience in banking, with plastic cards, with spy cameras run by AI everywhere for the convenience of our security, a government that is about to end the use of cheque books and, in future, cash (for of course our convenience) we will walk straight into PR China's lack of personal freedom to say what we like when we like where we like or to go where we like when we like. All for our "convenience" and "security" and "harmony in society". Once AI has been trained to lip-read and recognise our voices and body language.....and that is here, now, in science labs and no doubt in PR China. The internet and modern computing is a curse. We are developing quantum computing and using light to enable high-speed computing and when that is unleashed for our convenience the only thing that might save civilisation is Anthropogenic Global Heating, which will be a remarkable disruptor and will engender very destructive warfare and floods of climate refugees of a scale such as never seen in our human history. What comes out of that may be an improvement on PR China. But I doubt it, as it won't resolve the human problem of psychopaths being granted their power to "save" the tribe.

Ah, "security and harmony". The Uighurs are not criminals. Nor were the Jews in Hitler's Germany. That's why they ended up in concentration, sorry, re-education, camps; Arbeit Macht Frei, the welcome on the gates of Auschwitz. Learn from the past!

Yes, I know a few Jewish people and they feel blessed they are living here. Thankfully, they aren't the same analogy that we have today in Australia.

The banks have dutifully cancelled their overseas call centres and brought them back to Australia. However, I reckon in the future, we will be speaking to a robot when we call customer help with a bank.

I refer to past analogies and to present analogies, such as what is happening in PR China, as history has a habit of repeating itself. Maybe not this year nor maybe in the next 10 years but if one is complacent one falls into the same trap as did the former Jews of Germany. The loss of freedom occurs by a thousand changes, one step at a time, and all for our "convenience'. PR Chinese spy cameras (for security and harmony, naturally) can distinguish people from the way they walk. That has been around for at least a year. OK,you might catch a crook, but never forget that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. As for loss of "social credit", simple gossip by a spiteful or jealous person suffices for that, even in Australia. In this country all too often people are obliged to prove their innocence.

That is horrifying.
That was presented in 2018 so it would be even sticker now.
A Chinese person, no matter where they live overseas, if they say anything derogatory about China it can come back on the entire family still living in China and they will be punished severely.

I'll not be going there. I'll certainly already be flagged on their system.

And the same goes for me. I wrote Woolworths off when the debate about Australia Day raised it's ugly and very insulting head.
Good keep up the good work... encourage your friends to do the same.

Too many cameras reduce prices & people will not steal. The profits of these supermarkets is way too high
I can show you that a Family Store near me is currently selling Kirks drinks for a pack of 10 for around $8.00 while in Woolworths they were at about $14.00 and the same goes for Coles. If that is not been greedy I don't know what it is.
