Woolies worker’s ultimate act of kindness: 'Is it dodgy?'

How would you react if, out of the blue, a complete stranger offered to pay for all of your food and grocery items…

After witnessing an employee at a local supermarket do something that seemed out of the ordinary, a Woolies customer is left wondering what exactly happened.

Should she feel grateful, or should she have some concerns?

On the popular forum website Reddit, one mum from Melbourne shared an 'unusual' incident that recently happened to her while she was attempting to pay for her groceries at a self-serve checkout in Woolies.

The mum had just given birth, and at the time, she was out shopping with her baby.

Just as the mum was about to pay for her groceries, she was surprised that her phone payment didn't go through. So she was directed to the Woolworths Service Desk to complete the purchase.

'I just got back from Woolworths where I tried to pay with my phone on self-checkout,' she said. 'It wasn't working, so they printed me a barcode and took me to the service desk to pay, but my phone payment still didn't work.'

Even after a number of attempts, the mum's phone payment was unable to be processed successfully. Her newborn baby was already 'kicking off' and 'screaming the whole place down.'

It was at this point that the Woolies worker told the mum to simply go home with her groceries and said, 'Don't worry, it's on me.'

The mum was taken aback by the kindness of the stranger, and she even asked the employee if she could send the money to her instead. The Woolies member said no and then added, 'Seriously, it's on me.'

'I was so grateful and also mortified,' said the mum, who then asked for advice about the situation because she was worried that the worker might get in trouble for going out of their way to pay for her groceries.

'What I want to know is if the staff at Woolworths can do this? Or is it dodgy?' she asked. 'I want to go back and give her something to say thank you, but I don't want to get her in trouble if she did something she wasn't supposed to.'

Her post got a lot of attention from other shoppers on the forum website, and most of them said it wasn't unusual for supermarket workers to do nice things like this.

'She bought it, and she wants you to take it as the gift it was meant to be,' one user wrote in the comments. Another agreed and added, 'My partner works at a supermarket and has paid for people before. It feels good. Pay it forward!'

'I've done it a few times. I don't see how it's dodgy. The customer was struggling, so I just tapped my own card to pay. I'm 99% sure they'll pay it for you,' a third user went on to say.

'Accept the kindness, and remember it next time you see someone else in need,' added a fourth.

Receiving free groceries is undoubtedly a shocking but pleasant surprise, especially during these times when food prices are skyrocketing.

While most people are thrilled about it, some of us are not, especially due to reasons that the act of generosity may be motivated by a 'hidden' agenda.

This is what happened to Esa when he went to his usual supermarket in Melbourne to buy groceries. When the shopper went to open his wallet, he was told that everything had already been paid for.

Esa, who was confused by the situation, speculated that perhaps it was a reward from the grocery store. He didn't find out what really happened until a few weeks later when his friends showed him a video on TikTok.

It seems that he was secretly filmed while the incident happened, and the video was put on the internet and went viral.

Esa is a very private person and didn't want anyone to see him on social media. Even on his own accounts, he never publishes personal videos of himself. Now, he was caught on camera while just buying groceries, and everyone can see it because the video has been watched over six million times since it was posted.

The shopper said that when he saw the video, he felt 'embarrassed, guilty, a little bit shocked, and sad' because it made him look like a ‘desperate person who needed help’..

Even though we all agree that getting free groceries is a lovely thing, we must also be careful because we don't know what's going on behind the scenes.

Members, we wish you a joyful and safe shopping experience always! Perhaps someone will buy your groceries in the near future! Wouldn’t that be nice? Let us know what you think about this story in the comments section below.

We are a doubting lot these days. More inclined to feel scammed than helped. Accept this gesture as given and when possible pay it forward. But dont make it a news worthy story. Most people are not generous for their fifteen minutes of fame.

What a beautiful gesture. It's a shame that in this day and age we are so wary of genuine acts of kindness, always looking for a hidden agenda. Accept it in the spirit it was offered, remember that feeling and try to pass that feeling along when the opportunity arises.:)
