Woolies shopper raises concern over 'unacceptable' food safety - ‘Not good enough, Woolies!'

We’ve all had a bad experience at the supermarket before. Maybe the lines were too long, or maybe we couldn’t find what we were looking for. But for one Woolworths shopper, her recent trip to the store turned out to be much worse than she could have ever imagined.

In a social media post, the Adelaide customer detailed an unsettling purchasing experience that left her feeling outraged.

She claimed that she had been shopping at her local Woolies store for a good couple of hours.

However, she was surprised to find a few boxes of frozen items left on the ground once she was done - and all of them were left out without being refrigerated for one second.

Because of this, she complained that the frozen items ended up becoming ‘nasty’, especially the ice cream products and frozen berries that were left on the ground in one aisle.

‘I did my fortnightly shopping in Woolworths at Woodcroft this evening; it took me a couple of hours,’ she explained in her Facebook post, saying that as she was walking by numerous aisles every time she was buying something, she couldn’t help but notice that the products weren’t being refrigerated.

‘I noticed these ice creams, frozen berries, and a huge frozen roast on the floor in the aisle waiting to be put in the freezers. No one was in the aisle at all. Every time I went back down there, for over two hours, they were left to defrost.’

‘I won’t be buying frozen stuff from there this fortnight as they would all have turned nasty. Especially that huge turkey that I forgot to get a photo of, but I'm sure it was!’

‘Not good enough, Woolies.’

Following the customer’s post, a spokesperson for Woolworths has confirmed that the frozen items in question have been taken out of the store's inventory permanently and were not sold to any of their customers.

'Our store teams work to uphold the highest food safety standards every day, so we're disappointed to have missed the mark on this occasion,' said the spokesperson.

'Unfortunately, as a result of our processes not being followed properly, the stock was disposed of, and we've followed up with the team internally.'

'If any customers have any concerns in-store, we encourage them to raise it directly with our team.'

Key Takeaways

  • A Woolworths customer found boxes of frozen items left on the ground in an aisle and claimed they were not refrigerated for hours.
  • Woolworths has confirmed that the frozen items were taken out of the store's inventory and were not sold to any customers.
  • If customers have any concerns in-store, they are encouraged to raise them directly with a team member.

If you ever experience similar situations, you can also report the incident to Woolworths at 1300 767 969.

There you have it, folks! What are your thoughts on this? Do you think it's negligent for the staff members to leave the frozen items out of the freezer?

This sometimes happens on a Saturday morning in my local Coles. However I can't believe that someone takes 2 hours to do grocery shopping. I have a list and I am in and out and quickly as possible

It took you two hours to do your shopping!!!!!! And you went up that aisle a number of times????? No-one needs to spend that amount of time in one supermarket. Have a list, start at one side- only go to the aisle s you need to. No longer than 1/2 an hour, pay and leave. Who has that amount of time to waste in one store.

Chances are that a shopper removed the packs from the freezer and failed to put them back. I would have checked if the items were still frozen (the first time I saw them, not two hours later) and if this was the case, I would have put them back into the freezer. If they were thawed out, I would have looked for a staff member and asked to speak to a manager, to have the goods removed.

What is wrong with asking to speak to the manager and pointing it out to him so that he can rectify the problem instead of splashing it all over social media complete with photos? Instead of which she said nothing, did nothing except take the photos and by doing so ensured that all that produce went to waste.
