Peter Jackson is revisiting one of music’s most iconic stories.

Hidden footage and unseen moments are set to reveal the Beatles like never before.

Fans of the Fab Four are in for a treat as the legendary documentary series gets a 21st-century makeover.

Peter Jackson’s production companies are remastering The Beatles Anthology for Disney+, with the series streaming later this year.

The original eight episodes will be digitally enhanced, and a brand new ninth episode will include previously unseen behind-the-scenes footage of Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr reconvening around the release of the original series.

The documentary first aired on ITV in 1995 and was hailed as the definitive account of the Beatles’ career, reuniting the surviving three members with producer George Martin, former press officer Derek Taylor and one-time road manager Neil Aspinall.

Its release was accompanied by the single, 'Free As a Bird', the first new music from the band since their split, which was so tightly guarded that EMI deployed armed guards to protect it.

The remaster coincides with the 30th anniversary of the original series and continues Jackson’s long-running collaboration with the Beatles’ catalogue through his Wingnut Films and Park Road Post teams.

They previously produced the eight-hour Disney+ docuseries The Beatles: Get Back, which drew from Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s 1970 'Let It Be' footage, and the accompanying concert movie, which Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw described as ‘unmissable’.

'The Beatles: Get Back takes audiences back in time to the band's intimate recording sessions during a pivotal moment in music history.'

Disney+ description

An accompanying album will feature session outtakes, previously unreleased demos and rare recordings curated by Giles Martin, George Martin’s son.

Anthology 4 includes new mixes of 'Free As A Bird' and 'Real Love', using de-mixed John Lennon vocals from original producer Jeff Lynne, and Giles Martin has also remastered the three original Anthology albums released in 1995 and 1996.

The complete 2025 Anthology celebration

Restored 9-part documentary series (streaming 26 November)

New Anthology 4 album with 36 tracks, including 13 unreleased recordings (21 November)

Remastered versions of original Anthology 1, 2 & 3 albums—25th Anniversary Edition of the Anthology book (14 October)

All presented with modern restoration technology

The project will drop in November alongside an updated version of the Anthology book.

The Anthology remaster joins a wave of high-profile Beatles projects, including a series of films from Sam Mendes, each focusing on a different band member.

Because the new episode relies on documentary footage rather than dramatization, the approval process is expected to be simpler than for the scripted movies.

Ringo Starr previously reflected on the film projects, saying they “had a writer [involved] – very good writer, great reputation, and he wrote it great, but it had nothing to do with [wife] Maureen and I. That’s not how we were. I’d say, ‘We would never do that.’”

What This Means For You

Peter Jackson is remastering The Beatles Anthology for Disney+, adding a brand new ninth episode to the classic series.

The project reunites Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr with key figures from their past, including legendary producer George Martin. Fans can also look forward to an accompanying album and remastered original albums, all set for release in November, marking the 30th anniversary of the original 1995 series.

For those who grew up with the Beatles, this is more than just a remaster—it’s a chance to relive cherished memories, rediscover the stories behind the music, and share the magic with younger generations. Older fans will surely recognise the familiar faces and hear the voices they loved, making it a nostalgic journey that connects past and present.

How much more of the Beatles’ story remains hidden in the vaults, waiting to reshape what we think we know?
