Why Replacing Your Old Mattress Could Be the Best Investment for Your Health

As we age, we all strive to maintain a good quality of life, among which sleep quality plays an essential role. Now, there isn't a single place in our homes where we spend more time and yet often overlook over the years—our mattresses.

Yes, the humble mattress, upon which we dedicate approximately a third of our existence! The truth is, a sound night’s sleep is a pillar of good health and well-being, and the state of your mattress plays a crucial role in ensuring quality sleep.

Many of us, however, tend to shy away from splurging on a top-quality mattress, considering the substantial price tag that may come with it. Yet, investing wisely in a high-quality mattress can potentially save your future self substantial healthcare costs and contribute to overall happiness.

Let's dive into why investing in a decent mattress may just be the best gift you can give yourself (and yes, your wallet in the long run). Here are five impressive reasons to inject a bit of TLC [tender love and care] into your bedroom and gain the benefits of sound slumber, and a healthier life.

Cut Down Stress Levels

Ever had those sleepless nights where you toss and turn until it's nearly dawn? Only receiving 4-5 hours of sleep acts as a major catalyst for stress, increasing your blood pressure and putting extra strain on your heart.

All adults, no matter their age, need roughly the same amount of sleep. But did you know the recommended number is 7 to 9 hours each night?

A peaceful snooze on a comfortable mattress* can transform the way you manage and respond to various circumstances throughout your day. So why not give yourself the luxury of a better start each morning by choosing a mattress that guarantees relaxation*?

Ease Your Back Pain

Your spine and vertebrae take the brunt of your mattress choice. Skimping on a high-quality mattress can lead to waking up with a stiff or painful back, hindering your daily activities.

A superior mattress boasts ergonomic* design, delivering ample support to your back, sidestepping the potential for mattress-induced back pain.

More Bang for Your Buck

It may seem counterintuitive, but hear us out: in the long run, a high-grade mattress can save you money. As they are crafted with durability in mind, quality mattresses can significantly outlast their cheaper counterparts. The initial outlay may be more, but a reliable mattress will last much longer, saving you repeat purchases and the inevitable lack-of-sleep-related healthcare bills down the line.

Unlock a Healthier Life

Living a healthier life is indeed a multifaceted pursuit in modern times. A good night's sleep can do wonders for your overall health. It boosts your immune system, reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and can improve memory. Investing in a good mattress allows you to tap into these benefits, making it one of the invaluable decisions you can make for your health.

How to choose the perfect mattress

Your sleep health is as important as your diet and exercise routine. Many Aussies, however, overlook the role of their mattress in their quest for the perfect night's sleep. Are you bearing the burden of countless sleepless nights and waking up to achy mornings? The culprit might be lying right beneath you! Allow us to take you on a quest for the perfect mattress tailored just for you—let's delve into the art and science of mattress picking with your comfort in mind!

While the perfect mattress* varies from one person to another, some core factors can assist in your quest, states Dr Kristof, a Melbourne-based chiropractor.

'Picking the best mattress very much comes down to personal choice. Some find solace in a futon style bed that’s just a cushion. Others might prefer a full latex mattress. The variety is vast, so it’s crucial to understand your preferences.'

So, brace yourself as we delve into the key factors that should be on your radar before you buy.

The Many Faces of Mattresses

From the classic spring to the cutting-edge foam and hybrid variants, mattresses come in all sorts of sizes, shapes, and materials—each sporting its unique benefits and potential pitfalls. Dr. Kristof emphasises there’s no right or wrong answer when choosing a mattress type —it's all about what works best for you and your body.

- Innerspring mattresses: These classical designs are made with layers of fabric, latex, or foam hiding a series of springs underneath.

- Foam mattresses*: They usually contain variants of foams, like gel foam and memory foam. These can offer varied benefits including motion isolation and enhanced thermal regulation.

- Hybrid mattresses: As the name suggests, these mattresses amalgamate the innerspring system with layers of latex, gel, or memory foam—giving you a taste of multiple materials in one mattress.

- Latex mattresses: Latex, a rubber-like material, makes the mattress firm yet comfortable, somewhat similar to memory foam—though both behave differently.

Remember, it's all about finding the perfect mix of materials that provide you with a sweet slumber retreat night after night!

Firm or Soft: Find Your Sweet Spot

Finding the right firmness can indeed be a tough nut to crack. However, medium support is seen as the magic spot by experts, given its adaptability. 'Most people can adapt to a medium mattress. It's like the Goldilocks of mattresses, not too hard, not too soft, but just right,' suggests Dr. Kristof.

Bargain Hunting: Make Your Budget Work for You

Did you know you could save big bucks simply by buying a mattress at the right time? 'Brands typically introduce models around late winter to early spring (between July and September), so you might nab a discount* on “older” models,' informs Dr. Kristof.

Take, for example, award-winning brand Emma Sleep’s Christmas in July sale*.

Test-Drive

Just like test-driving a car, you need to try out how the mattress feels against your body. 'I recommend finding a mattress that you can test drive, this is vital to gain a better understanding of how well it fits your body,' says Dr Kristof.

Luckily, many online retailers now offer a trial period where you can easily return a mattress within a certain number of days if you find it isn’t right for you. How neat is that?

The Impact on Back Pain

Are you one of the many back pain sufferers in Australia? You might have probably laid the blame on numerous factors, but has your mattress ever crossed your mind?

A study in the Journal of Orthopaedic Medicine found that medium-firmer mattresses offer relief to those with lower back pain compared to other firmness levels.

'Focus on the level of support the mattress offers, rather than simply picking something based on the number of pocket springs,' instructs Dr Kristof.

Now having enlightened you on the factors to consider while hunting for your dream mattress, let's also look at a mattress that has gained rave reviews.

Enter the Emma Diamond Hybrid Mattress*! The Emma Diamond Hybrid Mattress evenly distributes your body pressure, ensuring a comfortable night’s rest. With features like a foam infused with diamond and graphite particles that wick away excess heat, low rolling resistance, and a 100-night trial period*, it might just be the sleep companion you've been looking for.

Of course, it's not all roses, with some reviewers mentioning issues like the mattress feeling too firm initially. But as with any new mattress, it takes a few weeks to adjust and find that ever-elusive 'sweet spot'.

‘What I do love most is no movement in the bed when husband changes position or gets out of bed.’ raved one customer.

If the Emma mattress* sounds like it could be the one for you, we have some great news! From now until October 1st, 2023, you can use the code COMEHOMETOCOMFORT at the checkout for an extra 5% off your purchase*.

But wait, it gets even better, this July, Emma Sleep is offering up to 55% off some of their most popular products*.

Until July 31st, you can upgrade to the Emma Diamond Premium Mattress*, with prices starting from just $1,169.55 (normally $2,599). Click here to read more*.

Plus, with the code COMEHOMETOCOMFORT at the checkout, you’ll receive an additional 5% off the already discounted price*! That’s an additional saving of $58.47 on your Emma Diamond Premium Mattress*, saving you a total of $1,487.92.

The Bellissimo mattress is by far the most comfortable of all we tried.
I've had 3 lower back surgeries and was recommended a waterbed.
We had the waterbed for approx 10 years.
After trying the Bellissimo we discarded the waterbed.
Sorry to disagree with SDC, the Bellissimo is the "BEES KNEES"
No partner disturbance at all the mattress is that good.
Queen Bellissimo Duet 4000 Firm Mattress $2,795.

The most important thing is that you find the perfect mattress for you! Sounds fantastic :giggle:

There is no way on earth that I would spend $1,000 or more on a mattress!

On my trips to Europe, I always check out furniture stores for fun and I have found that mattresses are heavily overpriced in Austalia - like most things. This is also proven when one looks at the prices of mattresses in IKEA. To compare I did a search on how much mattresses cost in Germany. All of their top mattresses came in at below 500 Euro ($800.00).

Trudi,
If you want to sleep on six logs strung together, that's your call.
If you want a sleep that is deep and super restful you have to spend the cash..
I have lived and worked around the world and Australia.
the mattress we have now is the BEES KNEES BAR ANY OTHER ONE.
And trust Me I've slept or tried to sleep on some woeful excuses called beds!!!

"If you want a sleep that is deep and super restful" - straight from their advertisement!

I really couldn't care less how much money you are willing to spend on your mattress, you can spend $10,000 if you want.

I am a savvy shopper who evaluates what is reasonable and what is way over the top and, as a European, I can assure you that mattresses sold in Australia are priced way out into the stratosphere! My mattress cost around $600 and is firm, just the way I like it. My sleep is "deep and super restful".

ha ha!! Don't you envy the people who tell you "They can sleep anywhere, any time, any place even near a beehive???? Dream on sleeping beauty. Where is your expensive mattress????

Actually I have more concern for my pillow. If my head isn't comfortable the rest of me is not. The last thing packed in the past on ALL occasions to all places was my pillow. Always kept FRESH by my special treatment , groovy shaped, sweet smelling top of the class treatment. & yes, EXPENSIVE. Cheap pillows can't be labelled for a good nights sleep.

My friend tells tales of me taking my last ride with the same comfort.
My last words telling the "undertaker" to trim the edges to fit the box.
I know if I head upwards I'll be ok,
But
i won't think of what could happen if I head downwards.

Reading all the above, I couldn't give a hoot.
We paid the money and love the result.
If you disagree so, be it.

Personally, I don't give a S#*T what you think.
Just carry on living in your small WORLD...
Please remember that it was YOU WHO DECIDED TO BAG WHAT I SPENT ON A MATTRESS NOT YOU!!!

My hubby has recently suffered a fractured spine. It is osteo related, so, it had to calcify on its own without an operation. Because of this, we had to go to his aged care provider an ask for a hospital grade bed. Only thing, if you have a bed like that, you can't just plonk a normal mattress on it. He has to have one that pumps air whilst still supporting the spine so the bars don't stick into the delicate section of his back. The hybrid we had to get costs $6,000 retail. Fortunately, our package allows us to hire/buy. So it's $300 a month until we own it.
How do people who are not on aged care afford such things? It's a concern.
As far as I'm concerned, it would be lovely to have the money to change my mattress as I age and the state of my spine changes. My scoliosis has worsened over the last couple of years, however, I have to stick to the mattress I have as it is not that old. I just go with the flow, sleep differently and my Chiropractor Andy looks after me very well.
There is a need to maintain health, but it is not always affordable.

I knew it another plug for Emma
