Why Karl broke his diet for a cheeseburger challenge

Karl Stefanovic is known for being larger than life and having a laugh, but an on-air bet and challenge left him in a tricky spot this week.
It's well-known that the Today show star Karl Stefanovic has been working hard to get into tip-top shape for some years now. While his dedication has been admirable–in 2020, Karl even pledged to lose 10 kilograms in 10 weeks–sometimes a (tasty) temptation is strong enough to make even the most committed dieter throw in the towel.
On Friday, the Today show host threw his diet to the wind after his co-host Alex Cullen lured him into a 'cheeseburger challenge'.
The bet was simple: if Alex's team, Parramatta, beat Penrith in last Thursday’s NRL round - which they did 17-16 - then he’d have to down 10 McDonald's cheeseburgers on air.
Always up for a challenge, Karl said:
'I am a man of my word, and you have worked with me for many, many years – I am prepared to take one or ten for the team.'
The burgers were brought in and co-hosts Sarah Abo and Alex even ate a burger themselves to show their support for Karl… But equally to savour the sight of his hilarious diet downfall live on air.
It started well for Karl, but things quickly took a turn for the worse when it was time to stick to his promise.
Even with all the support from his fellow hosts, Karl only managed two burgers before bringing the challenge to a stop.
‘I've got the sweats – I'm starting to get sweaty, my god,' Karl said as he wiped his brow. 'I can't do it. I can't fulfil the bet.'
Watching the scene, Today Extra hosts David Campbell and Sylvia Jeffreys were only too eager to comment on the scene:
'I have never seen a sadder advertisement for Macca's in my life,' David laughed.
'Who would have thought a cheeseburger would make him so sad?' Sylvia added.
Many viewers of the show were largely supportive of his attempt.
‘You make my day, Karl.’ said one.
‘I bet he will never eat another cheeseburger again!’ added another.
And one viewer summed up our thoughts, saying, ‘Poor Karl! Funny though!’
We were rooting for him, too, members, but food challenges are rarely a good idea when you’re on a diet (even if others talk you into it).
It reminds us of our younger days when a friendly bet was on the table, and eating 10 cheeseburgers seemed like a great idea!
What bets have you made between friends and family? Have you gone too far with a friendly challenge? Let us know in the comments below!
