Why is Sunrise star Sam Mac stepping away from the show?
Many of us have our favourite TV personalities who become the very reason we tune in to our beloved shows.
Some of them have been a part of our lives for so long that we’ve watched their life's milestones, such as Sunrise’s weatherman, Sam Mac.
For those who are regular viewers of Sunrise as well as Seven, there’s a noticeable absence this month. Sam Mac is taking a break from shows, and here’s why.
In 2023, Sam Mac hopped on 112 flights, taking viewers on a delightful journey through numerous charming Aussie towns and cities.
However, with a partner and a one-year-old daughter awaiting him at home, it’s now time for him to pause and direct his attention to watching his lovely little Margot grow.
Sam plans a month of parental leave while Rebecca returns to work as a stylist.
‘She’s been thinking about it for the past few months, and now that Margot is over a year old, she’s ready to properly get back into the workforce,’ Sam said.
The weather presenter expressed his thanks to Seven and the Sunrise team for granting him the opportunity to assume greater responsibilities at home as their family embarks on this new chapter.
‘It’s my turn to be getting Margot up, feeding her and becoming her personal assistant/servant,’ he jested.
So, what’s ahead for the father-daughter duo?
Sam is looking forward to visits to the zoo and aquarium, relishing those precious moments together.
Margot is at ‘a really good age right now’ and has reached some exciting milestones, including taking her first steps, has spoken her very first word, and even indulging in adorable animal sounds whenever possible.
Sam playfully shares that he may have ‘brainwashed’ the little one to say her first word, which happened to be ‘Dad’.
‘She’s walking now, which is awesome, but it’s a bit daunting because we have to childproof the house…but really exciting times,’ he shared.
‘Margot’s changed so much even in the past couple of months.’
‘So it’s super-exciting to have some proper quality time with her.’

In the following months, the McMillan-James household is centred on family, with Sam taking leave and the approaching Christmas celebrations.
Their plans include visits to Melbourne, where Rebecca's family lives, and Adelaide, where Sam's parents are based.
Recently, Sam had a wonderful time with his parents during their visit to Sydney in late October.
He wanted to make a special memory with his dad, whom he ‘rarely spends one-on-one time with’, unlike his mum, who has enjoyed the Logies and is often ‘the one getting spoilt’.
With Paul McCartney in town, Sam had the perfect surprise for his diehard fan of a dad. He treated both his parents to a delightful dinner and then revealed the exciting news to his father.
Sam shared this heartwarming moment on his social media, and it received mixed reactions.
Sam’s followers in Australia resonated with his intention to give his dad a special treat.
However, some international viewers misinterpreted the video, wondering why his mum, Loretta, wasn’t included in the concert invitation.
‘It was so funny, I mean, social media got a bit freaked out, but they totally missed the point. (They) don’t know me and don’t know the context,’ he pointed out.
‘A lot of those people who wrote those comments are from America or England, so it’s totally out of context.’
‘But, like, 99 per cent of people totally got what was going on.’
‘Mum obviously knew that I had a surprise just for Dad and me after our dinner.’
‘But it was the best. Dad is still buzzing and still talking about it.’
