In my younger days I always had a crew cut, to be on the safe side the day before I was starting national service I went to the barbers and told him to give me a short haircut, the first morning on parade I got a tap on the shoulder with the words haircut Soldier.

You are quite right, in Egypt our parade ground was open to all of the local population, on the days of our Free From Infection by the medical staff ( commonly known as the free fag issue amongst the ranks ) the Arab men and women and children lined up for the biggest laughs of their lives as we all dropped our shorts to be examined front and rear.
