Whisky business: ALDI's budget bottles steal the show at prestigious awards

In a world where the price tag often dictates expectations of quality, a surprising underdog story has emerged from the spirits industry.

ALDI, the beloved discount supermarket chain known for its budget-friendly prices, has just proven that excellence doesn't always come with a hefty cost.

At a gathering that celebrates the finest in the world of spirits, three ALDI whiskys have not only competed but have taken home top honours, leaving many whisky aficionados and casual drinkers alike raising their glasses in surprise and admiration.

The 2024 Spirits International Prestige (SIP) awards is no small affair. With a panel of over 300 spirit enthusiasts, the competition is fierce, and the judging is rigorous.

More than 1,300 spirits were put to the test across various categories, with each entry being evaluated on its aroma, taste, and finish—the trifecta of qualities that define a spirit's character and complexity.

ALDI’s Highland Earl Scotch Whisky 700ml ($36.99), a blend that has now become synonymous with both affordability and quality, was awarded the prestigious platinum medal in the ‘Blended Malt Scotch Whisky’ category.

Joining it on the podium were its siblings, the Highland Black 8YO Blended Scotch Whisky 700ml ($44.99) and Highland Green Blended Malt Scotch Whisky 700ml ($44.99), both of which secured gold medals.

This is a remarkable achievement for a range of whiskies available exclusively at ALDI and at a price point accessible to a wide range of customers.

Paul Handley, ALDI's whisky connoisseur and Buying Director, couldn't contain his excitement over the wins against top-shelf spirits.

‘Delivering the highest quality liquor at the most affordable price point is our top priority when it comes to what we put on our shelves for our customers,’ he explained.

‘Winning the consumer panel’s vote in the SIP Awards’ blind tasting is a testament to our promise of low-price, high-quality options for our shoppers.’

Mr Handley also shared some personal serving suggestions, noting that their multi-award-winning Highland Whisky range is versatile enough to be enjoyed in various ways.

Whether you prefer it neat, chilled, with ice, or as part of a classic old-fashioned cocktail, these whiskies are sure to impress.

‘For me, there’s nothing better than a dram of our Highland Earl Scotch Whisky, on a cold winter’s night, by the fire, bringing the essence of Scotland to my home to perfectly end the week,’ he shared.

‘The Highland range also is always great to have in the whisky cabinet when a few friends come over for an after-dinner treat.’

The winning bottles also received the Consumers’ Choice Award, further solidifying their reputation as crowd-pleasers.

The world of whisky is often associated with high price tags and exclusive labels, but recent events have proven that exceptional quality doesn't always come with a hefty cost.

ALDI's whisky, for instance, made headlines by clinching top honours at prestigious global awards, showcasing that affordable options can stand toe-to-toe with the industry's finest.

This victory not only highlights the growing recognition of budget-friendly spirits but also echoes a similar story closer to home.

Another wallet-friendly whisky made waves, proving its mettle against a competitor priced at $1,200. Find out how this local gem redefined the whisky landscape for enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.

Strange! I've shopped at Aldi in NSW, Queensland, Victoria and WA and they have always had liquor in-store.
